  • Program Notes Program
Program Notes Program Notes by April L. Racana 24 Jun Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) Overture to "Candide" It has been said that Leonard Bernstein never approached any work the same way twice, and his score for Candide may very well be the epitome of the extent to which he would go to continually rework and revise his compositions. The opening for this show, which has been dubbed both 24 musical and operetta, came on December 1st, 1956 and was based on Jun Voltaire’s eighteenth-century satire, which had been adapted by author Lillian Helman. The first run of the show only lasted 73 performances, however it didn’t take long for the ‘Overture’ to become an orchestral piece on its own, making its debut performance with the New York Philharmonic in January 1957. Over the next thirty years Bernstein continually revised the entire musical numerous times, with varying success in its many transformations. The ‘Overture’ contains a mixture of tunes from the show, including The Best of All Possible Worlds, Oh Happy We, and Glitter and Be Gay. So closely associated with the New York Philharmonic was Bernstein, and so well-loved was this work, that at a memorial concert following Bernstein’s death in 1990, members of the orchestra performed the ‘Overture’ without a conductor as a tribute to the symphony’s Laureate Conductor. Work composed: 1956 World premiere: 26th January, 1957 Instrumentation: piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3,trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion (snare drum, tenor drum, bass drum, triangle, cymbals, glockenspiel, xylophone), harp, strings 26 Program Notes Program Notes George Gershwin (1898-1937) Rhapsody in Blue Originally titled American Rhapsody, George Gershwin was apparently convinced by his lyricist brother, Ira, that the title needed some re-thinking.

  • Angel Sanctuary, a Continuation…
Angel Sanctuary, A Continuation… Written by Minako Takahashi Angel Sanctuary, a series about the end of the world by Yuki Kaori, has entered the Setsuna final chapter. It is appropriately titled "Heaven" in the recent issue of Hana to Yume. However, what makes Angel Sanctuary unique from other end-of-the-world genre stories is that it does not have a clear-cut distinction between good and evil. It also displays a variety of worldviews with a distinct and unique cast of characters that, for fans of Yuki Kaori, are quintessential Yuki Kaori characters. With the beginning of the new chapter, many questions and motives from the earlier chapters are answered, but many more new ones arise as readers take the plunge and speculate on the series and its end. In the "Hades" chapter, Setsuna goes to the Underworld to bring back Sara's soul, much like the way Orpheus went into Hades to seek the soul of his love, Eurydice. Although things seem to end much like that ancient tale at the end of the chapter, the readers are not left without hope for a resolution. While back in Heaven, Rociel returns and thereby begins the political struggle between himself and the regime of Sevothtarte and Metatron that replaced Rociel while he was sealed beneath the earth. However the focus of the story shifts from the main characters to two side characters, Katou and Tiara. Katou was a dropout at Setsuna's school who was killed by Setsuna when he was possessed by Rociel. He is sent to kill Setsuna in order for him to go to Heaven.

  • Raff's Arragement for Piano of Bach's Cello Suites
Six Sonatas for Cello by J.S.Bach arranged for the Pianoforte by JOACHIM RAFF WoO.30 Sonata No.1 in G major Sonate No.2 in D minor Sonate No.3 in C major Sonate No.4 in E flat major Sonate No.5 in C minor Sonate No.6 in D major Joachim Raff’s interest in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and the inspiration he drew from them is unmatched by any of the other major composers in the second half of the 19th century. One could speculate that Raff’s partiality for polyphonic writing originates from his studies of Bach’s works - the identification of “influenced by Bach” with “Polyphony” is a popular idea but is often questionable in terms of scientific correctness. Raff wrote numerous original compositions in polyphonic style and used musical forms of the baroque period. However, he also created a relatively large number of arrangements and transcriptions of works by Bach. Obviously, Bach’s music exerted a strong attraction on Raff that went further than plain admiration. Looking at Raff’s arrangements one can easily detect his particular interest in those works by Bach that could be supplemented by another composer. Upon these models Raff could fit his reverence for the musical past as well as exploit his never tiring interest in the technical aspects of the art of composition. One of the few statements we have by Raff about the basics of his art reveal his concept of how to attach supplements to works by Bach. Raff wrote about his orchestral arrangement of Bach’s Ciaconna in d minor for solo violin: "Everybody who has studied J.S.
