  • What Handel Taught the Viennese About the Trombone
291 What Handel Taught the Viennese about the Trombone David M. Guion Vienna became the musical capital of the world in the late eighteenth century, largely because its composers so successfully adapted and blended the best of the various national styles: German, Italian, French, and, yes, English. Handel’s oratorios were well known to the Viennese and very influential.1 His influence extended even to the way most of the greatest of them wrote trombone parts. It is well known that Viennese composers used the trombone extensively at a time when it was little used elsewhere in the world. While Fux, Caldara, and their contemporaries were using the trombone not only routinely to double the chorus in their liturgical music and sacred dramas, but also frequently as a solo instrument, composers elsewhere used it sparingly if at all. The trombone was virtually unknown in France. It had disappeared from German courts and was no longer automatically used by composers working in German towns. J.S. Bach used the trombone in only fifteen of his more than 200 extant cantatas. Trombonists were on the payroll of San Petronio in Bologna as late as 1729, apparently longer than in most major Italian churches, and in the town band (Concerto Palatino) until 1779. But they were available in England only between about 1738 and 1741. Handel called for them in Saul and Israel in Egypt. It is my contention that the influence of these two oratorios on Gluck and Haydn changed the way Viennese composers wrote trombone parts. Fux, Caldara, and the generations that followed used trombones only in church music and oratorios.

  • The Crucifixion: Stainer's Invention of the Anglican Passion
The Crucifixion: Stainer’s Invention of the Anglican Passion and Its Subsequent Influence on Descendent Works by Maunder, Somervell, Wood, and Thiman Matthew Hoch Abstract The Anglican Passion is a largely forgotten genre that flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Modeled distinctly after the Lutheran Passion— particularly in its use of congregational hymns that punctuate and comment upon the drama—Anglican Passions also owe much to the rise of hymnody and small parish music-making in England during the latter part of the nineteenth century. John Stainer’s The Crucifixion (1887) is a quintessential example of the genre and the Anglican Passion that is most often performed and recorded. This article traces the origins of the genre and explores lesser-known early twentieth-century Anglican Passions that are direct descendants of Stainer’s work. Four works in particular will be reviewed within this historical context: John Henry Maunder’s Olivet to Calvary (1904), Arthur Somervell’s The Passion of Christ (1914), Charles Wood’s The Passion of Our Lord according to St Mark (1920), and Eric Thiman’s The Last Supper (1930). Examining these works in a sequential order reveals a distinct evolution and decline of the genre over the course of these decades, with Wood’s masterpiece standing as the towering achievement of the Anglican Passion genre in the immediate aftermath of World War I. The article concludes with a call for reappraisal of these underperformed works and their potential use in modern liturgical worship. A Brief History of the Passion Genre from the sung in plainchant, and this practice continued Medieval Era to the Eighteenth Century through the late medieval and early Renaissance eras.

Bach (1642–1703) Susanne Rydén, soprano; Elizabeth Blumenstock, baroque violin Notes The Great Collectors During the 1980s, both Classical & Early Music recordings underwent a profound change due to the advent of the Compact Disc as well as the arrival of larger stores specializing in music. One of the casualties of this change was the recital recording, in which an artist or ensemble would present an interesting arrangement of musical pieces that followed a certain theme or style—much like a live concert. Although recital recordings were of course made, and are perhaps making a comeback, most recordings featured a single composer and were sold in alphabetized bins: B for Bach; V for Vivaldi.

  • Solo List and Reccomended List for 02-03-04 Ver 3
Please read this before using this recommended guide! The following pages are being uploaded to the OSSAA webpage STRICTLY AS A GUIDE TO SOLO AND ENSEMBLE LITERATURE. In 1999 there was a desire to have a required list of solo and ensemble literature, similar to the PML that large groups are required to perform. Many hours were spent creating the following document to provide “graded lists” of literature for every instrument and voice part. The theory was a student who made a superior rating on a solo would be required to move up the list the next year, to a more challenging solo. After 2 years of debating the issue, the music advisory committee voted NOT to continue with the solo/ensemble required list because there was simply too much music written to confine a person to perform from such a limited list. In 2001 the music advisor committee voted NOT to proceed with the required list, but rather use it as “Recommended Literature” for each instrument or voice part. Any reference to “required lists” or “no exceptions” in this document need to be ignored, as it has not been updated since 2001. If you have any questions as to the rules and regulations governing solo and ensemble events, please refer back to the OSSAA Rules and Regulation Manual for the current year, or contact the music administrator at the OSSAA. 105 SOLO ENSEMBLE REGULATIONS 1. Pianos - It is recommended that you use digital pianos when accoustic pianos are not available or if it is most cost effective to use a digital piano.

  • L'age D'or of the Chamber Wind Ensemble
L’Age d’or of the Chamber Wind Ensemble A document submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Ensembles and Conducting Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2013 by Danielle D. Gaudry BM, McGill University, 2000 BE, University of Toronto, 2001 MM, The Pennsylvania State University, 2009 Committee Chair: Terence Milligan, DMA ABSTRACT This document presents a narrative history of the chamber wind ensembles led by Paul Taffanel, Georges Barrère and Georges Longy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Using different historical approaches, this study examines contemporaneous musical society and the chamber wind ensemble genre to explore the context and setting for the genesis of the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vents, the Société moderne des instruments à vents, the Longy Club and the Barrère Ensemble of Wind Instruments. A summary of each ensemble leader’s life and description of the activities of the ensemble, selected repertoire and press reactions towards their performances provide essential insights on each ensemble. In demonstrating their shared origins, ideologies, and similarities in programming philosophies, this document reveals why these chamber wind ensembles created a musical movement, a golden age or age d’or of wind chamber music, affecting the local music scene and continuing to hold influence on today’s performers of wind music. ""!! ! Copyright 2013, Danielle D. Gaudry """! ! ! ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to all those who have been a part of my journey, both in the completion of this document and over the course of this degree.

  • 18Th Century Quotations Relating to J.S. Bach's Temperament
18 th century quotations relating to J.S. Bach’s temperament Written by Willem Kroesbergen and assisted by Andrew Cruickshank, Cape Town, October 2015 (updated 2nd version, 1 st version November 2013) Introduction: In 1850 the Bach-Gesellschaft was formed with the purpose of publishing the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) as part of the centenary celebration of Bach’s death. The collected works, without editorial additions, became known as the Bach- Gesellschaft-Ausgabe. After the formation of the Bach-Gesellschaft, during 1873, Philip Spitta (1841-1894) published his biography of Bach.1 In this biography Spitta wrote that Bach used equal temperament 2. In other words, by the late 19 th century, it was assumed by one of the more important writers on Bach that Bach used equal temperament. During the 20 th century, after the rediscovery of various kinds of historical temperaments, it became generally accepted that Bach did not use equal temperament. This theory was mainly based on the fact that Bach titled his collection of 24 preludes and fugues of 1722 as ‘Das wohltemperirte Clavier’, traditionally translated as the ‘Well-Tempered Clavier’ . Based on the title, it was assumed during the 20 th century that an unequal temperament was implied – equating the term ‘well-tempered’ with the notion of some form of unequal temperament. But, are we sure that it was Bach’s intention to use an unequal temperament for his 24 preludes and fugues? The German word for ‘wohl-temperiert’ is synonymous with ‘gut- temperiert’ which in turn translates directly to ‘good tempered’.

  • The End Is Nigh: Reflections of Philipp Nicolai's Eschatology in BWV 1 and BWV 140
The End is Nigh: Reflections of Philipp Nicolai's Eschatology in BWV 1 and BWV 140 Master's Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Department of Music Dr. Eric Chafe, Advisor In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Fine Arts in Musicology by Hannah Spencer May 2015 ABSTRACT The End is Nigh: Reflections of Philipp Nicolai's Eschatology in BWV 1 and BWV 140 A thesis presented to Department of Music Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Hannah Spencer In his mission to create a better repertoire of "well-regulated church music to the Glory of God," J.S. Bach utilized every aspect of his craft. Aside from the rich texts penned by his anonymous librettist, Bach intentionally utilized specific musical gestures to intertwine the Gospel into each layer of his compositions. In the case of BWV 1 and BWV 140 , Bach makes compositional choices that allow him to depict the eschatological viewpoint of Phillip Nicolai, the Lutheran theologian who penned the chorales used as the basis of these chorale cantatas. By analyzing Bach's use of such devices as large-scale harmonic patterns, melodic motives, and the structural use of chiasm, the depiction of motion between the realms of Heaven and Earth becomes clear. More than simply "church music," Bach's cantatas are musical sermons of intricate detail. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract..........................................................................................................................................ii
