    Johann Sebastian Bach Magnificat in D Major, BWV 243 Magnificat Quia respexit Quia fecit mihi magna Et misericordia eius Fecit potentiam Deposuit potentes Suscepit Israel Gloria patri Sicut erat in principio *** Chorus: S-S-A-T-B Soloists: Soprano 1, soprano 2, alto, tenor, bass Orchestra: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 oboes d'amore, 3 trumpets, timpani, strings, continuo ************************* Program notes by Martin Pearlman Bach, Magnificat, BWV 243 In 1723, for his first Christmas as cantor of the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Bach presented a newly composed setting of the Magnificat. It was a grand, celebratory work with a five-voice chorus and a colorful variety of instruments, and Bach expanded the Magnificat text itself by interpolating settings of several traditional Christmas songs between movements. This was the original Eb-major version of his Magnificat, and it was Bach's largest such work up to that point. About a decade later, he reworked the piece, lowering the key from Eb to the more conventional trumpet key of D major, altering some of the orchestration, and, perhaps most importantly, removing the Christmas inserts, so that the work could be performed at a variety of festivals during the liturgical year. It is this later D major version of the Magnificat that is normally heard today. Despite its brilliance and grandeur, Bach's Magnificat is a relatively short work. Nonetheless, it is filled with countless fascinating details. The tenor opens his aria Deposuit with a violent descending F# minor scale to depict the text "He hath put down [the mighty]". At the end of the alto aria Esurientes, Bach illustrates the words "He hath sent the rich away empty" by having the solo flutes omit their final note.

General Rules for All Titles 1.1 Titles (including movement titles) are capitalized following the rules of each language: a. English: capitalize all words except conjunctions, prepositions, and articles, unless they begin a title. b. French: capitalize all words up to and including the first noun; everything after that is lower case (except for proper nouns). c. German: capitalize first word, and all nouns. d. Italian & Spanish: capitalize first word, all else is lower case except proper nouns. 1.2 Movement Titles a. Movements follow under the main title; those in foreign languages should be italicized. b. Movement numbers are uppercase roman numerals (I, II, III, IV, rather than i, ii, iii, iv) c. If all movements of a work are performed in order, they do not need to be numbered; otherwise number the movements being performed with their original numbers. If only a few movements of many are being performed, it is possible to also add the word “Selections” in parentheses after the title to avoid confusion.     LearnMusicTheory.net 3.3 Types of Key Relationships The following five types of key relationships are in order from closest relation to weakest relation. 1. Enharmonic Keys Enharmonic keys are spelled differently but sound the same, just like enharmonic notes. = C# major Db major 2. Parallel Keys Parallel keys share a tonic, but have different key signatures. One will be minor and one major. D minor is the parallel minor of D major. D major D minor 3. Relative Keys Relative keys share a key signature, but have different tonics. One will be minor and one major. Remember: Relatives "look alike" at a family reunion, and relative keys "look alike" in their signatures! E minor is the relative minor of G major. G major E minor 4. Closely-related Keys Any key will have 5 closely-related keys. A closely-related key is a key that differs from a given key by at most one sharp or flat. There are two easy ways to find closely related keys, as shown below.     PROGRAM NOTES by Phillip Huscher Gustav Mahler Born July 7, 1860, Kalischt, Bohemia. Died May 18, 1911, Vienna, Austria. Symphony No. 1 in D Major Mahler did most of the work on his First Symphony in February and March of 1888, incorporating music that had been written much earlier. He revised the score on several occasions. The first performance was given on November 20, 1889, in Budapest, with the composer conducting. The score calls for four flutes and three piccolos, four oboes and english horn, four clarinets, two E-flat clarinets and bass clarinet, three bassoons and contrabassoon, seven horns, four trumpets, three trombones and tuba, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, tam-tam, harp, and strings. Performance time is approximately fifty-seven minutes. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's first subscription concert performances of Mahler's First Symphony were given at Orchestra Hall on November 6 and 7, 1914, with Frederick Stock conducting. Our most recent subscription concert performances were given on April 5, 6, 7, and 10, 2007, with Gustavo Dudamel conducting. The Orchestra first performed this symphony at the Ravinia Festival on July 19, 1949, with William Steinberg conducting, and most recently on June 24, 2005, with James Conlon conducting. When Alma Schindler first met Gustav Mahler, whom she later married, she could only remember how much she had disliked his First Symphony. She wasn't alone. The history of this symphony, even into relatively recent times, is one of misunderstanding and rejection. The first performance, in Budapest in 1889, was greeted with indifference, bewilderment, and, in the words of the local critic, "a small, but, for all that, audible element of opposition." Mahler seldom understood the animosity his music aroused.

    PROGRAM NOTES by Phillip Huscher Johann Sebastian Bach Born March 21, 1685, Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. Died July 28, 1750, Leipzig, Germany. Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068 Although the dating of Bach’s four orchestral suites is uncertain, the third was probably written in 1731. The score calls for two oboes, three trumpets, timpani, and harpsichord, with strings and basso continuo. Performance time is approximately twenty -one minutes. The Chicago Sympho ny Orchestra’s first subscription concert performances of Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite were given at the Auditorium Theatre on October 23 and 24, 1891, with Theodore Thomas conducting. Our most recent subscription concert performances were given on May 15 , 16, 17, and 20, 2003, with Jaime Laredo conducting. The Orchestra first performed the Air and Gavotte from this suite at the Ravinia Festival on June 29, 1941, with Frederick Stock conducting; the complete suite was first performed at Ravinia on August 5 , 1948, with Pierre Monteux conducting, and most recently on August 28, 2000, with Vladimir Feltsman conducting. When the young Mendelssohn played the first movement of Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite on the piano for Goethe, the poet said he could see “a p rocession of elegantly dressed people proceeding down a great staircase.” Bach’s music was nearly forgotten in 1830, and Goethe, never having heard this suite before, can be forgiven for wanting to attach a visual image to such stately and sweeping music. Today it’s hard to imagine a time when Bach’s name meant little to music lovers and when these four orchestral suites weren’t considered landmarks.

    MODULATION: PIVOT CHORDS APPLICATIONS OF THE HARMONIC WHEEL CONTENTS 2 The Modulation consists in changing from one Key to another. To do that, it is common to use a Pivot Chord, which is a chord that belongs to both keys, and then the new key is affirmed by a Cadence, which may consist, simply, in the chords V7 I. In this presentation, an explanation is given on how to obtain the pivot chords between two keys, using the Harmonic Wheel. For the sake of simplicity, only consonant pivot chords are considered, that is, Major or minor. © 2009 www.harmonicwheel.com CHORDS OF A GIVEN KEY 3 Every Major or natural minor key contains 6 consonant chords: 3 Major and 3 minor. On the Harmonic Wheel, these 6 chords are inside a curved rectangle and they are placed taking into account their affinity.
