MISSING IN ACTION

ery many years ago there ruled over England a king, who was called Richard Cœur de Lion. Cœur de Lion is French and means lion-hearted. He left England for a crusade and asked two of his trusted bishops to govern and keep the status quo. Prince John, Richard’s younger brother was furious and “green with envy” did not mean our seriously delicious Sheriff on burger on the next page, no dear reader -it was good ole’ hatred. You can imagine what happened next. Plotting and planning, befriending the wealthy Normans with the people of England only getting poorer thus creating an urgent need for a legend, a hero of sorts.

A FOREST AND AN ARCHER

ow do you choose between living in a forest and a home? It was not easy. Robin’s home was burned down and all his family killed by the minions working for Prince John. He survived only because he was exceptionally good with his bow and arrow. He fled into a nearby forest called Sherwood where Robin, Earl of Huntingdon, became Robin Sherwood, later referred to as Robin Hood. In the forest, heart broken and exhausted, Robin makes an oath to help the weak fight the strong and to take from the rich and give to the poor.

And that is how, many centuries later a small restaurant in Kloof Street Cape Town makes a similar pledge, to uplift and help those without means with every bite you eat. LOXLEY SIDE SALAD R 25,00 SALADS Lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, onions and peppers BEWITCHING GREENS

A DAME FOR OUR HERO

ady Marion only starts appearing in Robin Hood tales round about the 16th century, but we do feel that a love affair between the daughter of the Sheriff of Nottingham and Robin, the , is too good to leave out! So the most recent legend has it Marion was forced to marry a not-so-gentleman by the name Guy in order to keep another political agenda on the table. To cut a long story short, there was blood and mayhem, strong arms that rescue and a very foresty happy ever after. Soft violin music fading....

GIVE SOMEONE THE COLD SHOULDER - In The Middle Ages, lords and nobles were often faced with the common problem of getting rid of unwanted or obnoxious guests at feasts and gatherings. There is no evidence of when this practice actually started, but an unwanted guest was served a cold shoulder of meat; the toughest and most undesireable portion of a roast. Receiving this token symbol often resulted in giving the guest enough of a hint that he or she over-stayed their welcome. rair Tuck is synonamous with our hero. How do you interview for a swordsmen vacancy in the 12th century? Robin was looking for a spiritual leader with knowledge of medicine and someone that could teach reading. Via the 12th century “social media” aka talking over the fence the name of Friar Tuck was mentioned. Robin’s job interview: He must carry Robin over the river on his back. Begrudgingly the friar did so. Robin then asked him to carry him back. Halfway across the friar lost his patience and threw Robin off into the water. A sword fight ensued that legend says the friar won. It was also said that Friar Tuck could make wine, good wine...Hence us putting the story here, before you order your “real” drinks!

RUMOUR HAS IT that the tradition of toasting came about from the fear of poisoning - the idea being that the clinking of two glasses together would cause the liquid from both to spill into one another; thus the people you are drinking with wouldn’t poison you as they’d be poisoning themselves! BOUNCER - This popular term for a bar or tavern doorman also stems from the 13th Century. When entering a tavern it was customary to pay a small fee (usually one brass or copper coin) to ensure against damages and to ensure that the customer did not sneak away without paying his fare. As there was a wide variety of foreign coinage, a man would stand post at the door and literally bounce the coins he was given off of a wet piece of wood. If the coins ‘bounced’ it was a test that they were genuinely copper or brass and not counterfeits made of lead. Thus the term of “Bouncer” survived into modern times. WHEN LITTLE MEANS BIG

Now don’t get us wrong, when we say our hamburger portions are decent sized, we mean just that. Our namesake however met up with a stranger on a lonely forest wander, both trying to cross a one-man-a-time bridge. This man was the tallest man Robin has ever seen. His name was John Little. A stick fight was called as the stranger proclaimed bullying as he had no weapons but a stick. Robin was indeed a match for his competitor right up to the end when John, with huge effort threw Robin in the water. They became the best of friends and John was appointed as Robin’s Chief in Command, which also refers to our gobsmakincly good Sinful Ice Cream pops in the dessert section...you’ve got to try it, only small sticks involved!

NOT JUST MERRY AT THE PUB: Robin Hood is not a lone outlaw but the leader of a trained band of fighters. And it’s a good thing too. Robin’s a reckless lad sometimes. He’ll sneak into Nottingham once too often and get caught by the sheriff. Or he’ll pick a fight with the wrong traveller. And when the going gets rough, Robin blows three great blasts on his horn. That’s when his appear. Some say they are a small group of outlaws. Others say there were 140 or 150 Merry Men in Robin’s band. Some tales even say there were 300 stout fellows in the band. Whatever the case, if it weren’t for these sturdy yeomen (and yeo-women), Robin wouldn’t last a week. COCKTAILS IN ROBIN’S TIME COCKTAILS WERE JUST DRINKING FROM EVERYONE’S MUG

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE! - This phrase is commonly used toward someone who is acting pompous, arrogant or lofty. The phrase comes from the 13th Century. During that time Nobles were given a taller breed of horse to ride to signify their status and authority. Often commoners would tell each other to “Get off their high horses” when one was acting more authoritative than he had a right to.
