In over-crowded, slum- ridden Georgian London, gin was the opium of the people. For a few pennies, London’s poor found entertainment and escapism om cold and hunger at the bottom of a glass. In 1730, around 10 million gallons of gin were being distilled in the capital each year and sold om 7,000 dram shops. For well over 300 years, Great Britain’s Royal Navy issued a daily ‘tot’ of rum to the crews of their ships and always a double issue before battle and aer victory. Over time the rations of the ‘rum tot’ changed and in 1756 it was increased to one pint per day. Rum became a form of currency, a way to pay off old debts or to reward a shipmate for a favour.
