A New Species of Blepharicera Macquart (Diptera: Blephariceridae) from Western North America Abstract During a review of the Blepharicera of western North America, we discovered a new species from several mid- sized rivers in southwestern Oregon and northwestern California. We hereby present descriptions of the larvae, pupae, and adults of B. kalmiopsis, new species. Diagnostic characters and a brief discussion of bionomics and distribution are also provided. Based on previous and ongoing studies, B. kalmiopsis clearly belongs to the B. micheneri Alexander species group and appears closely related to B. zionensis Alexander. ORTHOCLADIINAE 7.1 SUBFAMILY ORTHOCLADIINAE 7 DIAGNOSIS: Antennae with 3-7 segments; may be strongly reduced or may be longer than head capsule. Labrum with S I variable (simple, bifid, branched, serrated, palmate or plumose); S II usually simple but may be bifid, branched, palmate or plumose; S III simple (rarely bifid); S IV normal. Labral lamellae present or absent. Mentum usually well sclerotized, with several to more than 25 teeth; ventro- mental plates absent/vestigial to very large, without striae (occasionally with ridges in Nanocladius); beard present or absent. Prementum variably developed but never with dense well developed median brush of setae. Body with anterior parapods (sometimes reduced and/or fused); with posterior parapods well developed, separate or fused, or parapods reduced or absent. Setal fringe, setal tufts or long setae sometimes present. Anal tubules normally present, may be reduced or absent/vestigial. NOTES: One of the most diverse of the chironomid subfamilies; orthoclad larvae are found in an amaz- ing variety of habitats, running the gamut from terrestrial (corn fields, dung, greenhouses, leaf litter in hardwood forests) to seeps, springs, streams, rivers, ponds and lakes in freshwater, and coastal estuarine and littoral marine areas. Most larvae are scrapers, shredders or collectors-gatherers; some taxa are preda- tors, some are parasites. Herbst Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, University of California, Star Route 1, Box 198, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA Key words: Ephydra, life cycle, development, distribution, Mono Lake, substrate Abstract The distribution and abundance of larval, pupal, and adult stages of the alkali fly Ephydra hians Say were examined in relation to location, benthic substrate type, and shoreline features at Mono Lake. Generation time was calculated as a degree-day model for development time at different temperatures, and compared to the thermal environment of the lake at different depths. Larvae and pupae have a contagious distribution and occur in greatest abundance in benthic habitats containing tufa (a porous limestone deposit), and in least abundance on sand or sand/mud substrates. Numbers increase with increasing area of tufa present in a sample, but not on other rocky substrates (alluvial gravel/cobble or cemented sand). Standing stock densities are greatest at locations around the lake containing a mixture of tufa deposits, detrital mud sediments, and submerged vegetation. Shoreline adult abundance is also greatest in areas adjacent to tufa. The shore fly (ephydrid) community varies in composition among different shoreline habitats and shows a zonation with distance from shore. The duration of pupation (from pupa formation to adult eclosion) becomes shorter as temperature increases. The temperature dependence of pupa development time is not linear and results in prolonged time requirements to complete development at temperatures below 20 ° C. -

Eretmoptera Murphyi Schaeffer (Diptera: Chironomjdae), an Apparently Parthenogenetic Antarctic Midge
ERETMOPTERA MURPHYI SCHAEFFER (DIPTERA: CHIRONOMJDAE), AN APPARENTLY PARTHENOGENETIC ANTARCTIC MIDGE P. S. CRANSTON Entomology Department, British Museum (Natural History), Cromwell Road, London SWl SBD ABSTRACT. Chironomid midges are amongst the most abundant and diverse holo metabolous insects of the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic. Eretmoptera murphyi Schaeffer, 1914, has been enigmatic to systematists since the first discovery of adult females on South Georgia. The rediscovery of the species as a suspected introduction to Signy Island (South Orkney Islands) allows the description of the immature stages for the first time and the redescription of the female, the only sex known. E. murphyi larvae are terrestrial, living in damp moss and peat, and the brachypterous adult is probably parthenogenetic. Eretmoptera appears to have an isolated position amongst the terrestrial Orthocladiinae: the close relationship with the marine Clunio group of genera suggested by previous workers is not supported. INTRODUCTION In the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, the Chironomidae (non-biting midges) are the commonest, most diverse and most widely distributed group ofhoi ometa bolo us insects. For example, Belgica antarctica Jacobs is the most southerly distributed free-living insect (Wirth and Gressitt, 1967; Usher and Edwards, 1984) and the podonomine genus Parochlus is found throughout the sub-Antarctic islands. Recently, Sublette and Wirth (1980) reported 22 species in 18 genera belonging to 6 subfamilies of Chironomidae from New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands. One sub-Antarctic midge that has remained rather enigmatic since its discovery is Eretmoptera murphyi. Two females of this brachypterous chironomid were collected by R. C. Murphy from South Georgia in 1913 and described, together with other insects, by Schaeffer (1914). -
