  • The Founding Trustees
The Founding Trustees: Apart from Lady Munster who herself sat on the panel of Trustees until her death in 1979, the first Trustees included friends of Lady Munster, from the worlds of finance and music. They were:- Gerald Coke, CBE – 1958-1979 Founder of the Trust and its first Chairman. Chairman of the Glyndebourne Arts Trust and of the Governors of King Edward’s School, Witley, his directorships included Rio Tinto –Zinc and the Royal Academy of Music. All these appointments were of considerable significance to the Trust. Other directorships included S.G. Warburg & Co. and the Royal Opera House. He was a serious collector of Handel memorabilia, which is now housed in the Foundling Museum in Bloomsbury. He retired as Chairman of the Trust in 1978 but remained a Trustee until the following February. Leopold de Rothschild, CBE – 1958-2005 Replaced Gerald Coke as Chairman in 1978. His appointments included Chairman of the Council of the Royal College of Music, of the English Chamber Orchestra and the Bach Choir. His directorships included the National Museum of Science and Industry, Sadler’s Wells (now English National Opera), the Glyndebourne Arts Trust, the Bank of England and his family’s bank, N.M. Rothschild & Sons Ltd. These two men, who devoted so much time and energy to the Trust and to the young artists who benefitted therefrom, have been the major influences in the Trust’s history; both from the financial work, both possessed of a great and enduring love of music. Sir Thomas Armstrong – 1958-1975 Educated at Keble College, Oxford, and at the Royal College of Music, he became organist at Christ Church, Oxford, from 1935-1955, and Principal of the Royal Academy of Music from 1955.

  • Decca Discography
DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>4 GREAT BRITAIN: digital, 1979-2008 In the early 1970s the advent of Anthony Rooley, the Consort of Musicke, Emma Kirkby, Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music brought a fresh look at repertoire from Dowland to Purcell, Handel, Mozart and eventually Beethoven. Solti recorded with the LPO from 1972 and the National Philharmonic was booked regularly from 1974-84. Also during the 1970s the London Sinfonietta’s surveys of Schönberg and Janá ček were recorded. Ashkenazy’s second career as a conductor centred initially on London, with the Philharmonia from 1977 and the RPO from 1987. Philip Pickett’s New London Consort joined the Florilegium roster in 1985 and Argo’s new look brought in a variety of ensembles in the 1990s. But after an LPO Vaughan Williams cycle was aborted in 1997, Decca’s own UK recordings comprised little more than piano music and recital discs. Outside London, Argo recorded regularly in Cambridge and Oxford. Decca engaged the Welsh National Opera from 1980-96 and the Bournemouth Symphony from 1990-96, but otherwise made little use of regional British orchestras. By the time they raised their performing standards to an acceptable level, Chandos, Hyperion and Naxos had largely replaced the old majors in the market for orchestral sessions. >RV0 VENUES One hundred and seventy different venues were used, eighty-eight in the London area and eighty-two elsewhere in Britain, but only one in ten (those in bold ) hosted thirty or more entries, whilst seventy were only visited once. LONDON AREA ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS , St.John’s Wood, London NW8 (1931), initially restricted to EMI labels, were opened to all from 1968.

This was the first time that the new Licentiate Diploma was presented and it was really good to see four recipients, resplendent in their new hoods, alongside the great and the good who were being presented with their Honorary Fellowships. It was a Patrons: Rt Revd & Rt Hon Dr Richard Chartres, Lord Bishop of London shame that more members weren’t able to join us but I will do my best to publicize Professor Dr Ian Tracey, Organist Titulaire of Liverpool Cathedral this annual event with as much warning as possible later this year. The opening chapter outlines the functions of the lute in early modern English culture and surveys previous research on the instrument and its repertory. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the hierarchical structure of Elizabethan society, highlighting shifting conceptions of “gentle” status during the sixteenth century. The complex position of music within early modern discourses on elite identity is discussed, alongside the potential of lute-playing skills to contribute towards social advancement.

The pandemic has had a profound impact on us all, no matter where we are in the world, but has also brought home the importance of music in our collective wellbeing. Music-making is our raison d’être, and it was business as usual for nearly two terms, with our students enjoying as rich a schedule of projects and performances as ever. But when Covid-19 hit and we had to close our doors, our institutional way of life was upended. Chris Christodoulou Chris As a community we are nothing if not resilient. Staff, students and alumni, while geographically distanced and often coping with difficult personal situations, continued to do what they do best – strive to make music at the highest level, and with a new flair for communicating it. The challenging task of moving teaching online was handled with commitment, and it was uplifting to see how we pulled together to support those struggling the most.
