General Characteristics of the District Korea is one of the North-West District of Chhattisgarh State. The District came into existence on 25th May 1998 in Madhya Pradesh State. Its parent District was Surguja. After the formation of New State of Chhattisgarh on 1st November 2000, the District falls under the Chhattisgarh State. The District has derived its Name from the Korea State, the former princely State Korea. 1.1 Location & Geographical Area. Korea district lies between 23 deg. 02' 42" To 23 deg. 44' 46" North latitude and between 81 deg. 46' 42" To 82 deg. 33' 43" East longitude. Its mean height from sea level is 700 Meters. Total area of the district is 5978 sq. Km. The Climate is ideal with a beautiful monsoon, a mild summer and a bearable winter. The District is bounded on the North by Shidhi District of Madhya Pradesh on the South Bilaspur Districts on the East by its parent District Surguja and on the West by Shahdol District of Madhya Pradesh. 1.2 Topography Small part of Korea District lies in the Ganga basin and the remaining portion is in the Mahanadi basin. North of Sonhat beyond Mendra village starts the Ganga basin and from Mendra Southward is the Mahanadi basin.Gopad is the major tribute of Son and originates about 10 miles North of Mendra village. It drains the Northern portion of the District. Hasdeo a major tributary of Mahanadi has its origin in Mendra village. The main tributaries of Hasdeo are Gej, Jhumka and Bania. The Eastern Area of the District comes in the Son basin and is is drained by Gobri river which joins the Rehar in Surguja District . Gobri has its origin in the hills North of Patna. 1.3 Availability of Minerals. Korea District has vast reserves of high-grade Coal. The main coal belts are in the Hasdo basin. Major deposits are in Chirimiri, Jhagrakhand, Curcha, Katkona, Pandavpara and Sonhat. Other deposits are in Nagar, Amritdhara, Gutra, Kilhari, Pathargaon and Damuj-Labji. Upto the last decade of the 19th century, Korea District has a vast stretch of forests dotted here and there with villages. These forests were very dense and thick. Forests and Coals play a very important role in the economy of District. Most common trees of Korea District are Sal, Mahua, Tendu, Palas, Char, Bija, Harra, Bahera, Sisam, Kusum, Salya, Khair, Arun, Gamhar etc. Bamboos are mostly available in the forests. 1.5 Administrative set up. Korea district is divided into 5 sub-divisions, 5 tehsils, 5 panchayat samitis, 236 Gram panchayats and 96 patwari circles, for administrative convenience. 2.
