Kristensen Natural Resources Defense Council February 2005 About the Author Hans M. Kristensen is an independent nuclear weapons policy analyst who has spent the last 20 years researching nuclear weapons policy and operations. He specializes in using the Freedom of Information Act to obtain declassified documents and is a consultant to the nuclear program at the Natural Resources Defense Council in Washington D.C. Kristensen is the co-author of the bi- monthly NRDC Nuclear Notebook in The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and writes the World Nuclear Forces appendix to the SIPRI Yearbook. Acknowledgments This report builds upon the extensive research conducted by independent analysts in the United States and Europe over the past several decades. Deciphering the infrastructure of nuclear operations is difficult and time consuming but a necessary and important task. My research and writing for this report was conducted with the generous support from the Ploughshares Fund. Robert S. Norris, Thomas B. Cochran, Alexandra Kennaugh, Elliott Negin and Alistair Millar provided much needed editorial assistance. Matthew McKinzie did his magic with maps and satellite images.
