  • Johnny Loves Nobody Atrick Mcgoohan Was a Tough Man to Know
The Rank Villainy of PATRICK McGOOHAN Ray Banks Johnny Loves Nobody atrick McGoohan was a tough man to know. Famously guarded and often opaque, his longest interviews often feature a moment of exasperation on the reporter’s part, typically manifested as an admission of failure. Two pages into a lengthy pro- file for Cosmopolitan in 1969, Jeannie Sakol sets Pout the impossibility of her task: “To even begin to understand the complexities of a man like Patrick McGoohan could mean a lifetime study of James Joyce, Irish Catholicism, the history of Ireland from Brian Boru to Brendan Behan, the heroes and scoundrels, and the woven threads of poetry, idealism, mother love and thwarted sexuality.” The real truth is that McGoohan’s chosen career was dictated not by ancestral history but by a bucket of coal. At sixteen, McGoohan was academically averse and painfully shy, the kind of boy who would watch the youth club dance from the street, safely swaddled in his favorite Mackintosh, “one of those universal, mass-produced, putty- coloured garments that make the average Englishman about as distinguishable as a grain of sand in the Sahara.” But when McGoohan was forced into a bit-part in the youth club play, carting a bucket of coal from one side of the stage to the other, he discovered that “being on stage, sheltered by the bright glare of the footlights, was a much better cloak of anonymity than a mere Mackintosh. On stage I found I didn’t mind what I had to do, or who I had to pretend to be.

  • Numbers in the Prisoner
NUMBERS IN THE PRISONER Surprisingly, numbers do not feature as much in the series as is widely perceived. It is a truism to say that our daily lives are tied up with numbers: everything from phones, TV channels, computers, clocks, personal and official data, measurements and distances, addresses, weights and sizes, and of course money. However, in the case of humans, The Prisoner has always been regarded as delivering a warning about numeralisation. Back in 1966, Patrick McGoohan was claiming that by 2000 we would all have numbers and no names. In 1968, after Fall Out, the actor was still insisting “We’re all becoming numbers.” It seems, in retrospect, that it was more a case of McGoohan’s own assertions which led to our believing that The Prisoner was a protest against the rise of numbers. In the episodes there is, unexpectedly, only a small element of resistance to numbers. Ignoring simple mentions of people’s badge numerals, the issue of numbers does not feature anything like as much as we might anticipate. In fact there are only a few stories in which there is any challenge to figures being used for identification purposes. In Arrival, the topic arises early on, when the new man in the Village tells the telephone operator, “Haven't got a number,” resulting in being informed, “No number, no call.” Later, in Number Two’s lair, Six makes his position abundantly clear: “I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered!” At the end of the story, the New Number Two dismisses him, “Good day, Number Six!” The subject challenges the term, “Number what?” and is told, “ Six, for official purposes everyone has a number.

  • Portmeirion As Unintentional Paratext
JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Published by Cardiff University Press ‘I Don’t Think the Two Would Be the Same Without Each Other’: Portmeirion as Unintentional Paratext Abby Waysdorf Utrecht University Email: [email protected] Keywords The Prisoner paratext Portmeirion fan tourism fandom interviews Abstract This article looks at media tourism through the concept of the paratext. The term paratext, originally developed by literary theorist Gérard Genette to discuss the ‘extra-textual’ elements of a book that gives the reader context about it (such as book covers or the author’s biographical information). It has become important to media scholars seeking to understand how audiences understand films and television shows in a media-rich environment. This paper expands on the concept, arguing that place can be used and understood as an ‘unintentional’ paratext – a paratext that was not created as one, but that functions as one for audiences. I do this through an analysis of the relationship between 1960s cult television show The Prisoner (ITV 1967-8) and its filming location of Portmeirion, a holiday village in North Wales, where fans have been visiting since The Prisoner first aired. Through analysis of 16 interviews with The Prisoner fans, participant observation at Portmeirion, and analysis of fan-produced writing, I show how fans have established and use Portmeirion as a paratext. Fans not only visit Portmeirion to better understand how it was used in the genesis and creation of The Prisoner, but establish parallels between Portmeirion itself and the program, putting The Prisoner into a particular British artistic tradition and further confirming it as a worthy object of fandom.

  • Jefferson Township Schools - Away Back When
erson Towns • by Kathryn Campbell Slasor Courtesy of Fort Vance Historical Society Preface This compilation of information on the schools of Jefferson Township is the result of a life-long interest in the evolution of education in this local area. Over the past sixty to sixty-five years, the author has been collecting every scrap of information available on three phases of this subject, namely: the very early subscription schools prior to 1834, the one-room schoolhouse era following the Public School Act of 1834, and the once flourishing institution of higher education - the Eldersville Normal School. This treatise draws on the work of Boyd Crumrine in his attempt to document the subscription schools which once dotted the wilderness landscape, as well as on other historians who supplied some of the stories and data herein contained. Since her own days as a school student in the Eldersville area of the township, the author maintained a continuous association with the great educator and historian, the late A.D.White. He entrusted her with his own lifetime collection of school records and facts stemming from his thirty- year stint as Supervising Principal of the Jefferson Township School District. Additional material is from the files of the late M.O.Butler, a historian in his own right, who taught 39 years in the Eldersville Schools and served part of this time as Principal. Various other individuals contributed old pictures of classes from the now extinct one-room buildings and from the 35 year existence of the Eldersville Normal School. The sesquicentennial celebration this year, 2003, of the formation of Jefferson Township, has prompted the effort to carry this project to completion.

  • A CHRONOTOPIC ANALYSIS of MARSHALL Mcluhan's "GLOBAL VILLAGE" and PATRICK Mcgoohan's the PRISONER
"THE WHOLE EARTH AS VILLAGE": A CHRONOTOPIC ANALYSIS OF MARSHALL McLUHAN'S "GLOBAL VILLAGE" AND PATRICK McGOOHAN'S THE PRISONER Nicole Maggio Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Interdisciplinary MA in Popular Culture Faculty of Social Sciences, Brock University St. Catharines, Ontario © October, 2008 11 Dedicated to Patrick McGoohan (March 19, 1928 - January 13,2009) iii ABSTRACT: Marshall McLuhan's "global village", and his theories on communications and technology, in conjunction with Patrick McGoohan's television series The Prisoner (ATV, 1967-1968) are explored in this thesis. The Prisoner, brainchild of McGoohan, is about the abduction and confinement of a British government agent imprisoned within the impenetrable boundaries of a benign but totalitarian city -state called "The Village". The purpose of his abduction and imprisonment is for the extraction of information regarding his resignation as a government spy. Marshall McLuhan originally popularized the phrase "the global village" in The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making o/the Topographic Man (1962), asserting that, "The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village" (p. 31). This thesis argues that valid parallels exist between McGoohan's conception of "village", as manifested in The Prisoner, and McLuhan's global village. The comprehensive methodological stratagem for this thesis includes Marshall McLuhan's "mosaic" approach, Mikhail Bakhtin's concept ofthe "chronotope", as well as a Foucauldian genealogicallhistorical discourse analysis. In the process of deconstructing McLuhan's texts and The Prisoner as products of the 1960s, an historical "constellation" (to use Walter Benjamin's concept) of the same present has been executed.

  • Diana Rigg, One of Our Favourite and Most Gifted Actors and for Many the Epitome of Sixties Cool, Charm and Charisma Had Passed Away
Back in July I thought it’d be good to follow on from the first issue, a Doctor Who special, with one paying tribute to other cult television shows, and I started putting this issue together in August after I received the first article, ‘The Avengers’ by John Winterson Richards. The article (which starts on page 3) was already ‘in the can’ if I can borrow that term, by the end of the month. Then, just a few weeks later, the sad news was announced that Dame Diana Rigg, one of our favourite and most gifted actors and for many the epitome of sixties cool, charm and charisma had passed away. Diana Rigg, who was a much loved and admired member of her profession, helped propel 'The Avengers' into its true golden age. In middle age she made a dazzling change of direction to be become one of our great classical actors. The recipient of Bafta, Emmy, Tony and Evening Standard Awards for her work on stage and screen she was a true force of nature. On page 41 we pay tribute to her. What is Cult TV? You can't predict what is going to become a TV cult. It's not the makers of a particular show that bestow cult status, but the audience who view it. Those with a passion who, long after a series has finished and gone to television heaven (shameless plug), keep it very much alive with devoted fan communities, online message boards, writing fan-fiction, and attending conventions dressed as their favourite characters.

  • The People Behind the Prisoner
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PRISONER (Converted from publication article with tables, so not original layout) Leaving aside editors and other crew members - all of course highly important - the main planning and production of The Prisoner was in the hands of more than two dozen men, who, one way or another, created the series, or contributed directly to it. What follows is a revealing and retrospective look at those involved, presenting an overall view of the series’ gestation and birth. Feature © Roger Langley. Introduction Studio production was housed in the Borehamwood Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer complex, situated fifteen miles north of London. The principal personnel were Patrick McGoohan as executive producer, occasional writer and director, with David Tomblin as series producer and, briefly, director. Tomblin, who had been born in Borehamwood, worked previously with McGoohan on Danger Man and together they were the sole directors of Everyman Films, the Prisoner production company. Also on board was George Markstein, as writer on Arrival and series script editor, except on four late episodes. The McGoohan and Markstein collaboration produced the idea for the series, based around the use of British wartime internment camps. Markstein created an initial synopsis after McGoohan declared that he would do no more Danger Man episodes. The new Prisoner series was to be a blend of espionage and sci-fi fantasy, but with its roots set in fact, leading to seventeen episodes being eventually produced for television. Don Chaffey and Pat Jackson each directed four episodes, being outdone by McGoohan, who headed five. Markstein, who had also worked with McGoohan on Danger Man, had a circle of known writers.

  • Whats It All About
“FREE FOR ALL” MAGAZINE (2001-2007) examined various aspects of the “Prisoner” series in a periodical feature “WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?”. Here is a combined collection from some issues. As is known, the penultimate story, "Once Upon A Time", was made several months before "Fall Out" and at a time when nobody knew how the series was going to end. When "Once" was produced, the strange goings-on in "Fall Out" had not been envisaged. It is said that "Once" was to be the 'cliffhanger' ending of a first series of 13 episodes. However, as the months passed, and McGoohan went to Hollywood to film the movie "Ice Station Zebra", a final 4 “Prisoner” stories were devised. So let's look at "Once" in situ, with no peek over the horizon at the series' finale. It was of course a clever feat to match up the ending of the penultimate story with the beginning of the last one, but that's for discussion another day. The episode is loosely based on the "Seven Ages of Man", from Shakespeare's "As You Like It", Act 2, Scene 7. No doubt Patrick McGoohan, who wrote and directed the episode, intended to stir into the script aspects of his days on stage with repertory and other theatre companies, as well as the autobiographical references which can be found within the plot. At times, the set is lit with an overhead spotlight, into which McGoohan stares. He always declared in his early acting days how the stage lights would present him with an invisible barrier between himself and the audience.

  • PATRICK Mcgoohan 1928 - 2009
PATRICK McGOOHAN 1928 - 2009 Obituary of the screen star and theatrical actor The passing of actor Patrick Joseph McGoohan, on 13th January, 2009, not far short of his eighty-first birthday, will be seen as both a great loss within theatrical and entertainment circles, as well as amongst worldwide admirers of him as a screen icon and cult figure. McGoohan was the star of and driving force behind two memorable British television classics of the sixties, “Danger Man” (called “Secret Agent” in the US) and “The Prisoner”. Although often remembered primarily for those productions, the actor also had many stage and cinema screen roles, as well as assorted directorial and scriptwriting undertakings. McGoohan was born in the New York neighbourhood of Queens, in the district of Astoria, on 19th March, 1928. His Irish parents, Catholics Thomas and Rose, had emigrated there in 1925, but returned to their native country when their son was six months old. Back in the homeland, a decade followed in which three daughters, Catherine, Anne and Frances, were born. Continuing attempts to make a decent living from farming proved unsustainable, leading to a decision to move to Britain, in the year before the outbreak of war. The north of England was chosen and the family settled in the city of Sheffield, which remained their home for many years. The young Patrick was evacuated during the war to Ratcliffe College, in Leicestershire and by the time he returned home in 1944, war was over and he was of an age to take a few lowly employments. He tried a spell in a factory, a bank and finally a chicken farm, although an allergy to feathers caused a severe resurgence of a childhood bronchial asthma condition.

Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Moellinger, Terry, There’s A Man With A Gun Over There: Cops And The Counterculture, Master of Science, December 2001, 304 pp., 2 tables, references, 236. By 1960, television advertisers recognized the economic potential of American youth, and producers were expected to develop programs to attract them, while still maintaining appeal for the older audience members. This task was to prove difficult as the decade wore on. While continuing to link the nation’s cold war concerns to the portrayal of good and evil, some shows, like 77 Sunset Strip, and The Mod Squad, explored alternative lifestyles, but still accepted American values. As the 1960s developed, crime programs continued to promote American hegemony but became increasingly more open to alternative reading strategies. This study examines the strategies developed to draw a youth audience to 1960s crime programs, while also supporting the dominant ideology of American society.
