It will b- published in three c parts: I. Apples, II. Stone Fruit. , UI, Pears, Nuts, and Other Fruits. This survey was conducted at the request of the National Coor- dinating Committee on New Crops. Its purpose is to obtain an indication of the volume of material that would be involved in establishing clonal germ plasm repositories for the use of fruit breeders throughout the country. Heavier clay soils that can readily be molded into a firm ball when moist are generally unsuitable. Soils high in calcium carbonate with caliche at or very near the surface are also generally unsuitable. Topsoil depth for fruit trees should be least 1 to 2 feet and near 5 feet for pecans. Shallow topsoil can be improved by terracing or mounding the topsoil and planting the trees on the elevated ridge or mound. Soil drainage is critical for good tree growth. Water drainage of a questionable soil can be checked by digging a post hole approximately 30 inches deep and filling it with water. That water should drain from the hole in less than 24 hours on a good site. Drainage in 24 to 48 hours indicates a marginal soil and water standing in the hole after 48 hours indicates unsuitable soil. Determined gardeners with marginal or unsuitable soil have the option of hauling in good topsoil, working in generous amounts of peat moss, compost or similar organic material at feast 1 foot deep, or mounding thin topsoil.

We are now giving notice that unless a request for scions (graft wood) of common commercially-available cultivars is for research purposes, we ask that you obtain that material from a commercial source. If you are not sure, there are websites that list availability such as: http://www.goodfruit.com/buyers. A general search for cultivar sources on Google can also be done. There is one excellent source that we use here when the question of commercial availability comes to us. This is an excellent book Fruit, Berry and Nut Inventory, Third edition: An Inventory of Nursery Catalogs Listing All Fruit, Berry and Nut Varieties by Kent Whealy lists many nurseries that carry not only common commercial material but also heirloom and rare cultivars published by http://www.seedsavers.org/. It is available on-line with a fourth edition in progress. If accessions are not available through commercial sources, we can provide scions/cuttings.   • Heirloom and Cider Apple Survey Results
    Heirloom and cider apple survey results The Northwest Cider Association recently surveyed cidermakers from the Pacific Northwest and across the country, to better understand the cider apple varieties that are in highest demand, how much volume they are expecting to purchase, and the average price they pay for heirloom and bittersweet apples. The surveys were conducted in January and February 2016, with 54 responses collected. Results were compiled by Emily Ritchie, NWCA Program Manager. This project has been funded by the Oregon Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, with advice from Marcus Robert, Cidermaker and Operations Manager for Tieton Cider Works LLC. APPLE VARIETIES: What Apples are in the Highest Demand for Cidermakers? When given a list of 17 commonly grown cider fruit, the 35 respondents from the NWCA, responded Dabinett, Yarlington Mill, Kingston Black, and Golden Russet as their top 4 preferred varieties. Approximately 50% of respondents each listed the top 3 as their preferred apples to purchase, with 27% wanting Golden Russet. Results from this question, when opened up to nationwide cidermakers, were consistent for the top 3 varieties in highest demand. Variances are slight on the next most highly sought out varieties, the 5th-7th preferred, which are Harrison, Harry Master Jerseys, and Porter’s Perfection. Please note “Hugh’s Crab” is incorrectly spelled and should be “Hewes.” If you’re more of a list person, rather than a chart, here is a table with the same information from 51 respondents: Specialty Varieties: Secondly, we asked what other varieties are cidermakers looking for which are not on the list?
