Popular Culture Imaginings of the Mulatta: Constructing Race, Gender
Popular Culture Imaginings of the Mulatta: Constructing Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Nation in the United States and Brazil A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Jasmine Mitchell IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Bianet Castellanos, Co-adviser Erika Lee, Co-adviser AUGUST 2013 © Jasmine Mitchell 2013 Acknowledgements This dissertation would have been impossible without a community of support. There are many numerous colleagues, family, friends, and mentors that have guided ths intellectual and personal process. I would first like to acknowledge my dissertation committee for their patience, enthusiasm, and encouragement while I was in Minneapolis, New York, São Paulo, and everywhere in between. I am thankful for the research and methodological expertise they contributed as I wrote on race, gender, sexuality, and popular culture through an interdisciplinary and hemispheric approach. Special gratitude is owed to my co-advisors, Dr. Bianet Castellanos and Dr. Erika Lee for their guidance, commitment, and willingness to read and provide feedback on multiple drafts of dissertation chapters and applications for various grants and fellowships to support this research. Their wisdom, encouragement, and advice for not only this dissertation, but also publications, job searches, and personal affairs were essential to my success. Bianet and Erika pushed me to rethink the concepts used within the dissertation, and make more persuasive and clearer arguments. I am also grateful to my other committee members, Dr. Fernando Arenas, Dr. Jigna Desai, and Dr. Roderick Ferguson, whose advice and intellectual challenges have been invaluable to me. -

Fast & Furious 6
In Memoriam 1942 – 2013 | ★ ★ ★ ★ ROGEREBERT.COM Choose a Section REVIEWS FAST & FURIOUS 6 ★ ★ | Steven Boone May 24, 2013 | ☄ 4 Muscleheads and muscle car fanatics deserve their own "Star Wars" or "Star Trek," I guess, and the Fast and the Furious movies seem to fit the bill. Just like those perennial sci-fi geekouts, this saga about super-heroic street racers is essentially about Print Page friendship. All the fancy nomenclature and delirious spectacle are just to help render the essential stuff in ways that won’t Like 26 embarrass a juvenile audience. It works. I don’t think my 10-year-old self could have tolerated Han Solo and Princess Leia kissing 1 at the end of "Return of the Jedi" if not for the consolation of watching the Vietnam War re-enacted by miniature space bears. Tweet 14 So it is with "Fast & Furious 6," which is arguably the most sentimental of the "Fast" flicks. The regular cast members are all either approaching 40 or well into their forties. When this series started 12 years ago, they were still hot young Hollywood upstarts. Whoever was a teen or tween back then, finding in these photogenic badasses the epitome of cool, is now likely sweating over rent and taxes. "Fast 6" wants to give them a little commencement present akin to "Star Trek VI," which actually put a lump in my throat when it ended by having the TV icons of my youth sign their names across the stars. Yet, "Fast 6" is still cold-blooded and brutal enough for the children. -

Having earned $2.3 billion as of October 22, 2013 at the worldwide box office, it has become Universal Studios’ biggest franchise of all time.[1][2] Films The Fast and the Furious (2001) Main article: The Fast and the Furious (2001 film) The film is loosely based on a magazine article, titled “Racer X”, about street clubs that race Japanese cars late at night. Elite street racer and ex-convict Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew: Jesse (Chad Lindberg), Leon (Johnny Strong), Vince (Matt Schulze) and Dominic’s girlfriend Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), are under suspicion of stealing expensive electronic equipment. The film followed a group of overachieving Chinese American high school students who became gangsters, making a direct challenge to the Model Minority Myth. The film caused some criticism from opponents that thought the film created a negative image of Asian Americans but Lin responded that the film did its job in both providing a space for discussion of the Model Minority Myth as well as creating more diversity in the range of characters that Asian Americans actors can play. Memorably the prominent film critic, Roger Ebert, offered a spirited defense of the film at its premier at the Sundance Film Festival saying that Asian Americans should be entitled to portray themselves in any way they pleased. Not only did the film receive a lot of acclaim from audiences and critics alike, but also caught the attention of MTV Films, which bought distribution rights. Lin’s work on Better Luck Tomorrow helped him become a talent to be watched and helped propel to stardom such actors as Roger Fan, Sung Kang, Perry Shen, John Cho, Karin Ann Cheung, and Jason Tobin. -

A sequel to the 2011 Fast Five, it's the sixth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise and stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Ludacris Bridges, Son Kahn, Gal Gadot, Luke Evans, Gina Carano, and John Ortiz. Fast and Furious 6 follows a professional criminal group led by Dominic Toretto (Diesel), to whom U.S. Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs (Johnson) offers amnesty for his crimes in exchange for help in tagging a skilled mercenary organization led by Owen Shaw (Evans), of which former lover Toretto Letty Ortiz (Rodriguez) is a member. After moving away from the street racing theme of previous fast five films to great commercial and critical success, the developers turned to Fast and Furious 6 with the aim of further transforming the franchise, incorporating elements of spy and adventure film, in the hope of further increasing the number of viewers. Pre-production began in April 2011, and the main photography began in London in July 2012, and included several international filming locations, including the Canary Islands, Glasgow and Los Angeles. -

Battleground Bonding Vol. 69, No. 19 www.cherrypoint.marines.mil May 12, 2011 See A3 Moondogs return to hero’s welcome LANCE CPL. SCOTT L. TOMASZYCKI MCAS CHERRY POINT After six months of patiently waiting loved ones welcomed home the Marines and Sailors of Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 3 upon their arrival to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point from Afghanistan May 7. While deployed, VMAQ-3 fl ew more than 2,575 hours in combat, conducting more than 630 missions, and jamming enemy communications in support of operations in southern Afghanistan. “The communications jamming is critical because the insurgents use communica- tions to set up ambushes and coordinate attacks on coalition forces,” said Capt. Nathan C. Berth, electronic countermeasures offi cer for VMAQ-3. “It’s given all our troops outside the wire the upper hand. They’re able to successfully do their mission whether it’s convoys, road clearing, country building, or raids without the enemy being able to use an early warning system.” After a successful deployment, the Moondogs came home to a warm welcome. Fam- ilies, friends, an ensemble from the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, and supporters from the USO greeted the Marines when they returned to the VMAQ-3 hangar. “It’s night and day from being deployed and being able to stay at home and see your family,” said Berth. “Being able to have those little creature comforts are nice again. For most guys, it’s getting reacquainted with the family. One of our captains had a kid while he was deployed, and this is going to be the fi rst time he’s seen his new born.” It wasn’t until shortly after midnight when the families reunited with their Marines and Sailors.
