Gloster Gladiator Mk I & Mk II Silver Wings High quality resin model kit Wojciech Kułakowski 30-680 Kraków ul.Serbska 2/15 Poland Gloster Gladiator Mk I & Mk II www.silverwings.pl Cat.No 32-008 [email protected] Gloster Gladiator Mk I & Mk II The Gladiator was to be the last British biplane fighterfighter and the firstfirst fighterfighter with an enclosed cockpit. The design was being eclipsed by new generation(monoplane) fighters, such as the RAF’s new Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire. The first version, the Gladiator Mk I, was delivered from July 1936, becoming operational in January 1937. The Gladiator Mk II soon followed, the main differences being a slightly more powerful Mercury engine driving a Fairey fixed-pitch three-bladed metal propeller instead of the two-bladed wooden one. The Gladiator was largely replaced in front line RAF service by the Hurricane and Spitfire at the outbreak of the Second World War. However, two squadrons were still used in the French and Norwegian campaigns and some planes were also in service during more peripheral campaigns duringthe early years of the Second World War. The classic biplane fighter was also one of Britain’s biggest pre-war export successes, seeing service in many countries. The Gloster Gladiator performed reasonably well in limited Finnish service against Soviet fighters during the Winter War. A total of 483 aircrafts were built for the Royal Air Force; and the rest was exported to 14 countries (Belgium, China, Egypt, Finland, Free France, Greece, Iraq, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Portugal, South Africa and Sweden).     GEORGE MORLEY FIDLER 1912-1940 The life and death of a brave airman from Great Ayton The War Memorial at Christ Church records seventeen Great Ayton men who lost their lives in the Second World War. Among them is the name of G M Fidler. In 2005, the Great Ayton Parish Council received a letter from the Mayor of Bachy, a small village near Lille in Northern France. He wondered if there was any information about Squadron Leader G M Fidler, who is the only British serviceman to be buried in their village cemetery. Subsequent research in Great Ayton, and a visit to Bachy, brought to light the tragic story of George Morley Fidler. Morley Fidler was born at Roseberry House, on Guisborough Road, Great Ayton, in 1912. His father was a builder and property developer who had bought land in the village; he built their family house “Canobie” (now 45 Addison Road) at the top of the Chapel Steps. Morley had an elder brother and sister, the twins Harold and Joan. Joan became a radiographer and worked at Kepwick Hall, which was in use as a military hospital. Joan contracted a serious illness there and died in April 1940, just a month before her younger brother’s death. Harold survived the war, but passed away while sleeping in front of the kitchen range at 45 Addison Road in 1973. George Morley was known as Morley, probably to distinguish him from his father, George. Morley was educated at the British School and then at the Friends’ School. As a young man (pictured left) he joined the family business for a few years, but his real passion was for flying, and in 1934 he joined the Royal Air Force.

The RAF Museum is FREE to enter and has sites at both London and the West Midlands. Both sites are an amazing day out for all the family and will be celebrating the BoB 80 with a series of special events and exhibitions. On tour: The Museum is giving members of the public a rare chance to see a real Spitfire from our collection in various public spaces. This will include Coventry, Telford, Shrewsbury, Birmingham, Cosford, Wolverhampton and Barnet. The Spitfire on tour will enable members of the public to find out more about this iconic aircraft and the role each town and city played during the BoB. London: The London Museum is home to the most complete set of Battle of Britain aircraft in the world including the ‘fighter four’: Spitfire, Hurricane, Messerschmitt 109 and Fiat CR42, all participants in the BoB. This year they will be supported by new displays telling the wider BoB story, including a fine art exhibition. There will also be a series of events for all the family, including The Battle of Britain Vintage Festival, Spitfire 10K and Family Run, and a Battle of Britain Aircraft Access event. Cosford: Home to the world’s oldest Spitfire, the Cosford Museum houses both British and German aircraft from the BoB era.
