theological truth that God is not a user and how charismatic Christian ministerial staff change the world without exhausting themselves. Burnout and experiences of being "used" in fast-paced charismatic ministry is a reality that needs addressing with theologically sound ways of working and resting. It is not suggested that God does not use us to change the world, but that God is not an exploiter. There is great work to do and, concurrently, God is interested in us for far more than what we can produce. The first section describes the problem, suggests contributing factors from culture that exasperate the problem, and offers a consideration that a high view of God from Scripture is the antidote. Section two provides an overview of the Church’s historical responses to work and rest. Jesus lived the perfectly integrated life. But from the Patristic period on, Church leaders wrestled with whether the active or contemplative life is superior to the other. This section includes the unique contributions that Puritanism, capitalism and Pentecostalism bring to the tension of work and rest. In the thesis, I offer the solution that the ministerial leader needs to inhabit the tension of action and contemplation instead of resolving it. The beliefs and practices charismatics bring to working for God make it difficult to imagine themselves working with God, but a theology of contemplative activism could alleviate this difficulty. I explore ways in which ministerial staff teams can experience this, believing that a theology of contemplative activism for the charismatic Christian leader would result in less burnout, better action organizationally and deeper joy individually. viii 1 SECTION 1: THE PROBLEM This research project explores the connection between the theological truth that

The purpose of the study is to find out why the Assemblies of God Mission (AGM) is no longer waxing strong vis-à-vis during its emergence. Findings showed that there are a lot of bickering and bigotries among the pastors and the lay. The crave for materialism is seriously affecting the spiritual life of the church. Methods of approach are historical and descriptive coupled with primary and secondary sources. Keywords: Mission, evangelism, charity, Igboland, and development and expansion Introduction The missionaries of the Europeans had settled down for the task of “civilizing” the indigenes, a process of westernization usually mistaken for Christianity, abandoning the pneumatic values of the Kerygma. It was this negligence that agitated the minds of Harris, Braide and American Evangelicals to launch aggressive evangelism in the early twentieth century. The legend Augustus Ehurien Nwogu of Old Umuahia in Abia State was a product of this early 20th century church development. The crisis thus generated in him led to his reconversion from Niger Delta Pastorate (NDP) to the faith Tabernacle Congregation (FTC).     [AJPS 3/2 (2000), pp. 227-251] ASSEMBLIES OF GOD THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION IN ASIA PACIFIC: A REFLECTION Benjamin Sun Introduction The twentieth century Pentecostal movement was born on April 9, 1906 in a run down section of Los Angeles in the United States. There “fire” resembling what was recorded in Acts 2 came down from heaven.1 From this humble beginning, the movement expanded to 500 million people by the end of the century. Thus, many church historians have called the twentieth century the “Pentecostal Century.” Education has played a significant and yet struggling role in the Pentecostal movement. Many early Pentecostals felt that formal theological training was to be avoided at all costs since it would stifle the Spirit-filled life. The early leaders of the Assemblies of God (AG) U.S.A. rejected “intellectualism,” but saw the need for education to train Christian workers. Their desire for missionary work stemmed from the Great Commission (Matt 28:19, 20), which closely associated evangelism with education. So when the Assemblies of God established churches overseas, they also founded theological institutions.
