We often talk in church about our being made in the image of God and God being with us in the world through the incarnation of Jesus Christ. While this is certainly true we should not lose sight of the Otherness of God. God is not another part of creation, God is the creator who was before the beginning and will be when all is ended. God’s otherness is powerfully expresses in the Book of Isaiah: Ch 55 ¨ 8For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. 9For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. ¨ Encountering God is an encounter with the Other. Prayer and worship are attempts to engage with the Other, not to know about the other but to know through relationship. Part of the journey of faith is to learn to love and form relationship with the other, both God and our neighbour. One way of thinking about the work of salvation is that Christ comes to enable us to 2 connect with the other, to enable us to love God and one another. ¨ Both of our readings this evening relate accounts of encounters between different cultures and what happens when people of faith meet those different from themselves.

    1 Memorial Day 2021 Pastor James Foley – Shared Sunday, May 30, 2021 SETTING THE STAGE PT. 1 KEY 1 – Memorial Day is once again upon us! It should be noted that Memorial Day is more than an opportunity to enjoy a three-day weekend. Rather, it affords us the occasion to consider and commemorate the sacrifice of more than 1.3 million men and women who gave their lives in service to this nation. Thus said, I do hope that you will avail yourselves of the opportunity to participate in local town proceedings. In fact, at the conclusion of this message I will invite Ron Phelps to touch upon this and more. Ultimately… KEY 2 – Memorial Day should matter to us as Americans. Perhaps it should matter even more so as Christians. Why? Because the themes of selflessness and sacrifice are at the heart of Christian faith and practice. Such elements are foundational to our belief system, being addressed by virtually every book of the Bible! Perhaps no book of the Bible touches upon these themes as powerfully as the Book of Philippians (NT). This morning, I have chosen to explore this epistle (i.e., the letter of Paul to the ancient church at Philippi). Let’ us delve in… PHILIPPIANS 2 PT. 1 In many ways, the “center of gravity” for this inspired work is found in its second chapter. In Philippians 2:5– 11, the apostle Paul details the story of Jesus incarnation, life, ministry, death, resurrection and exaltation in a highly poetic manner. Scholars agree that Paul drafted it during his two-year house arrest in Rome. Acts 28:1-31 • Author and Time: Paul wrote it about 62 A.D. as he anticipated his release from prison. • Audience: The Philippian Church. Paul established the church in Philippi approximately ten years prior, during his second missionary journey recorded in Acts 16. • Purpose: His purpose was to show his appreciation and love to the Philippians for their continued support, and to encourage their growth. • Dominant Theme: Joy in the Christian life is all about perspective. True joy is not based on circumstances. The key to lasting joy is contentment found through a relationship with Jesus Christ. The words "joy" and "rejoice" are used 16 times in the Epistle. • Key personalities: Apostle Paul, Timothy, Epaphroditus, Euodia, and Syntyche. BACKGROUND: The apostle Paul did not write Philippians in response to a crisis or to correct errors as he did with Galatians and Corinthians. Instead, he wrote to express his appreciation and affection for them for their care and support of his ministry. More than any other church, the believers in Philippi offered Paul material support for his ministry (2 Corinthians 8:11; Philippians 4:15–18). Philippians 4:15-16 - "Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need." This season was especially critical because Paul was under house arrest for two years, thankfully he was still able to preach the gospel without hindrance.

An Introduction to Acts The Author There are no serious doubts as to the authorship of the book of Acts of the Apostles. Luke is assigned as its author. As early as the last part of the 2nd century, Irenaeus cites passages so frequently from the Acts of the Apostles that it is certain that he had constant access to the book. He gives emphasis to the internal evidence of its authorship. Tertullian also ascribes the book to Luke, as does Clement of Alexandria. That Luke is the author of the book of Acts is evident from the following. ! The Preface of the Book. The writer addresses Theophilus (Luke 1:3), who is the same individual to whom the gospel of Luke was also directed, and makes reference to a “former treatise” which dealt with “all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was received up” (1:1-2). This is very evidently a reference to the third gospel. ! The book of Acts and the gospel of Luke are identical in style, as a number of scholars have pointed out and demonstrated. ! The book of Acts comes as an historical sequel to the gospel of Luke, taking up with the very events, and at the point where the gospel of Luke concludes, namely the resurrection, the appearances following the resurrection, and the commissioning of the Apostles to the task for which they had been selected and trained by the Lord, and the ascension of Jesus.

    Preorcjah Vol. 2(1), 2017 www.ezenwaohaetorc.org Assemblies of God Mission in Igboland, 1970-2016: A thematic x-ray Patrick Enoch Nmah Abstract Assembles of God church provides a particularly intriguing context for a study of the church in Igboland. The purpose of the study is to find out why the Assemblies of God Mission (AGM) is no longer waxing strong vis-à-vis during its emergence. Findings showed that there are a lot of bickering and bigotries among the pastors and the lay. The crave for materialism is seriously affecting the spiritual life of the church. Methods of approach are historical and descriptive coupled with primary and secondary sources. Keywords: Mission, evangelism, charity, Igboland, and development and expansion Introduction The missionaries of the Europeans had settled down for the task of “civilizing” the indigenes, a process of westernization usually mistaken for Christianity, abandoning the pneumatic values of the Kerygma. It was this negligence that agitated the minds of Harris, Braide and American Evangelicals to launch aggressive evangelism in the early twentieth century. The legend Augustus Ehurien Nwogu of Old Umuahia in Abia State was a product of this early 20th century church development. The crisis thus generated in him led to his reconversion from Niger Delta Pastorate (NDP) to the faith Tabernacle Congregation (FTC). He Nmah Preorcjah Vol. 2(1), 2017 later separated from the FTC to form the church of Jesus Christ (CJC), which shortly became Assemblies of God Mission in Igboland (Ndubuisi, 1997). The main objectives of this study is to discuss the effects of bickery, materialism, lukewarm attitude towards mission and evangelism, and how they have created unnecessary rivalry, hatred, envy, spiritual barrenness and administrative bankruptcy.
