Our interaction with digital media is becoming increasingly prevalent in our day-to-day lives and continues to permeate our offices, homes and play spaces. Yet few designs begin to interface with media and the processing or transmittal of information between the user and the surfaces, which define our world. This study proposes to create an outdoor digital landscape, which is part of a larger performance area. This space utilizes digital media to allow speakers, musical groups, and other performers another dimension to express their material. The performance space and digital presentation area should be viewed as an entire experience away from that of reality. The goal of the project is to continue to blur the lines between information and form, and to play with what we conceive of as reality. The project will provide an outlet for digital artists as well as a chance to experiment with form, space and information and our ability as humans to influence process and transmit information between surfaces. Music will be the ignition for this process; extracting bits of data and information from musical pieces and applying that to the design of this space. -

History of Exchange Paris, France Chicago’s Sister City Since 1996 Co-Chair: Brett August Co-Chair: David Reithoffer 1996 September Focus: Signing Agreement After a visit to Chicago former Paris mayor, President Jacques Chirac proposed to Mayor Richard M. Daley that Chicago and Paris enter into a sister cities agreement. The agreement was solidified in Paris in September 1996. 1997 Focus: Government First Deputy Mayor of Paris, Jacques Dominati, accompanied a small delegation, to Chicago. Meetings focused on ideas for alleviating traffic congestion in Paris and parking alternatives. In addition, the Paris Committee hosted a benefit dinner at Bistro 110 featuring the renowned Chef Joel Robuchon. Funds provide seed money for future sister cities projects. Focus: Culture Paris Committee members cheered on French runners during the Chicago marathon at Paris Patisserie, a restaurant in Lincoln Park. The number of French runners increased from seven in 1996 to more than 150 in 1997 due to a member of the Paris Committee solicited French runners during the Paris marathon. In the first week, Mr. Maazel will lead Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 — with soloist Yefim Bronfman, continuing the Philharmonic’s survey this season of Brahms’s complete symphonies and concertos — and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 18 at 2:00 p.m.; and Saturday, January 19 at 8:00 p.m. The following week, Mr. Maazel will lead the Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy; Lutosławski’s Chain 2: Dialogue for Violin and Orchestra, with soloist Jennifer Koh in her Philharmonic subscription debut; and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 25 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, January 26 at 8:00 p.m. The works on both programs reflect the composers’ reactions to nationalism. Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 is considered to represent Finland’s push for independence, and Tchaikovsky composed Romeo and Juliet at the suggestion of Mily Balakirev, head of the “Mighty Five” Russian nationalist composers. -

The Hero of Karol Szymanowski’s Opera King Roger in Tadeusz Miciński’s Theatre of the Soul Edward Boniecki Institute of Literary Research, Polish Academy of Sciences Towards the end of the first act of Szymanowski’s opera King Roger, the hero of the title, ruler of Sicily, calls to judgment the Shepherd, who is the cause of religious confusion through preaching about an unknown God, with the following words: When the stars light up in the dark blue sky, you will come to the gates of my palace. There the guard will challenge you with ‘Shepherd’, and you will answer them: ‘Roger’.1 The challenge is ‘Shepherd’ and the response is ‘Roger’. But when in the second act the Shepherd arrives at Roger’s palace, he responds to the guards’ challenge, ‘Shepherd’, by correcting them: ‘Challenge: Roger!’ Might this be the librettist’s mistake? Should the response really be ‘Shepherd’? It soon turns out that this is in fact the case, because it is King Roger, wearing a pilgrim’s clothes, following the Shepherd who awakens in him a response. That response is the answer, to his own, Roger’s, existence, since the King’s soul, when challenged by the King as to its own identity, responded with ‘Shepherd’. Roger’s name opened the gates of the palace of the King of Sicily to the Shepherd. The challenge ‘Roger’ opens up the world of Szymanowski’s the- atrical imagination, created in his opera.2 Central to it is the character of King Roger, who exercises absolute rule over Sicily, and over the composer’s 57 58 Edward Boniecki imagination (it was the composer himself who changed the original title of the libretto by Iwaszkiewicz from The Shepherd to King Roger). -

JENNIFER KOH Biography Recognized for intense, commanding performances, delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance, violinist Jennifer Koh is a forward-thinking artist dedicated to exploring a broad and eclectic repertoire, while promoting equity and inclusivity in classical music. She has expanded the contemporary violin repertoire through a wide range of commissioning projects and has premiered more than 100 works written especially for her. Her quest for the new and unusual, sense of endless curiosity, and ability to lead and inspire a host of multidisciplinary collaborators, truly set her apart. Her critically acclaimed series include Alone Together, Bach and Beyond, The New American Concerto, Limitless, Bridge to Beethoven, and Shared Madness. Coming this season to Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Cincinnati’s Music Hall, The New American Concerto is Ms. Koh’s ongoing, multi-season commissioning project that explores the form of the violin concerto and its potential for artistic engagement with contemporary societal concerns and issues through commissions from a diverse collective of composers. In February and March 2022, she premieres Missy Mazzoli’s Violin Concerto with the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gemma New at the Kennedy Center and with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra conducted by Louis Langrée at Music Hall. Ms. Mazzoli’s concerto is the sixth to have been commissioned as part of the project, and Ms. Koh premieres the work having earlier in the season performed solo and chamber music by Ms. Mazzoli in San Francisco alongside the composer herself. Also in March 2022, Mr. Koh gives the New York premiere of Lisa Bielawa’s violin concerto Sanctuary at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall with the American Composers Orchestra. -

JENNIFER KOH Violin Biography Violinist Jennifer Koh is recognized for her intense, commanding performances, delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance. With an impassioned musical curiosity, she is forging an artistic path of her own devising, choosing works that both inspire and challenge. She is dedicated to performing the violin repertoire of all eras from traditional to contemporary, believing that the past and present form a continuum. She is also committed to exploring connections in the works she performs, searching for similarities of voice among diverse composers and associations within the works of a single composer. For her forward-thinking approach to classical music, presenting a broad and eclectic range of repertoire and fostering multidisciplinary collaborations with artists of all types and styles, Ms. Koh has been named Musical America’s 2016 Instrumentalist of the Year. During the 2015-16 season, Ms. Koh partners with pianist Shai Wosner for Bridge to Beethoven, a recital series that explores the impact Beethoven has had on a culturally diverse group of composers and musicians. The four-recital series pairs Beethoven's Complete Violin Sonatas with contemporary works including three commissions for the series by Vijay Iyer, Andrew Norman, and Anthony Cheung, which serve as companion pieces to select sonatas, as well as Jörg Widmann’s Sommersonate. All four Bridge to Beethoven recitals will be presented at the 92nd Street Y in New York and at the Herbst Hall in San Francisco by SF Performances where Ms. Koh serves as Artist-in-Residence this season.
