C’est la dernière mélodie que joue le dieu Pan avant de mourir en se souvenant de Syrinx, une nymphe qu’il a tant aimée. Pan était amoureux d’une nymphe du nom de Syrinx qui se Isabelle ROLIN / CPEM DSDEN 57 / Février 2012 transforma en roseaux pour lui échapper. En souvenir de cette nymphe, Pan confectionna un instrument de musique avec des roseaux : Syrinx ou flûte de Pan. Analyse : Dans ce mouvement descriptif, l’orage gronde et la foule des paysans se disperse. La pluie tombe puis le tonnerre éclate. Enfin, le calme revient et l’orage s’éloigne. Grieg, Debussy and Ravel – Biographical aspects Looking at the biographies of Grieg, Debussy and Ravel makes us realise, that there are few, yet some similarities in the way their career as composers were shaped. In my introductory paragraph I will point out some of these aspects. The three composers received their first musical training in their childhood, between the age of six (Grieg) and nine (Debussy) (Ravel was seven). They all entered the conservatory in their early teenage years (Debussy was 10, Ravel 14, Grieg 15 years old) and they all had more or less difficult experiences when they seriously thought about a musical career. In Grieg’s case it happened twice in his life. Once, when a school teacher ridiculed one of his first compositions in front of his class-mates.i The second time was less drastic but more subtle during his studies at the Leipzig Conservatory until 1862.ii Grieg had despised the pedagogical methods of some teachers and felt that he did not improve in his composition studies or even learn anything.iii On the other hand he was successful in his piano-classes with Carl Ferdinand Wenzel and Ignaz Moscheles, who had put a strong emphasis on the expression in his playing.iv Debussy and Ravel both were also very good piano players and originally wanted to become professional pianists.

Debussy Perspectives, 1918-2018 RNCM, Manchester Monday, 19 March Paper session A: Debussy’s Style in History, Conference Room, 2.00-5.00 Chair: Marianne Wheeldon 2.00-2.30 – Mark DeVoto (Tufts University), ‘Debussy’s Evolving Style and Technique in Rodrigue et Chimène’ Claude Debussy’s Rodrigue et Chimène, on which he worked for two years in 1891-92 before abandoning it, is the most extensive of more than a dozen unfinished operatic projects that occupied him during his lifetime. It can also be regarded as a Franco-Wagnerian opera in the same tradition as Lalo’s Le Roi d’Ys (1888), Chabrier’s Gwendoline (1886), d’Indy’s Fervaal (1895), and Chausson’s Le Roi Arthus (1895), representing part of the absorption of the younger generation of French composers in Wagner’s operatic ideals, harmonic idiom, and quasi-medieval myth; yet this kinship, more than the weaknesses of Catulle Mendès’s libretto, may be the real reason that Debussy cast Rodrigue aside, recognising it as a necessary exercise to be discarded before he could find his own operatic voice (as he soon did in Pelléas et Mélisande, beginning in 1893).     Upcoming Events GUEST PIANIST WEEKEND WITH ORY SHIHOR MASTER CLASSES Sponsored by Esther and Arnold Kossoff Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Ory Shihor, an award-winning pianist, educator and arts administrator, is director of the Colburn Academy and faculty member in the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles. He studied with Jorge Bolet at the Curtis Institute of Music and later graduated from the Juilliard School, where he was a recipient of the prestigious Gina Bachauer Prize. He earned his Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California. Shihor is a winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, a prize winner at the 9th Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition and was the first prize winner at the Washington International Piano Competition. Students from the conservatory piano studios, solo and collaborative, will perform in the class. As with the Germans, the French movement was influenced by rapidly changing styles and innovations. B. Wagnerian Hommages and Exorcisms 1. Wagner’s music was popular in France in the late ninteenth century. 2. Several French composers sought to neutralize German excesses (maximalism). C. Getting Rid of the Glue: Erik Satie 1. Satie, the original hippie, wrote three sarabandes in 1887. a. Satie’s sarabandes, however, were different, particularly in their use of harmony. “Consonant” seventh and ninth chords became a sign of French style. b. By making these chords consonant, Satie removed the harmonic glue. II. Debussy A. Claude Debussy’s Early Years 1. Satie’s use of harmony was influential. 2. Debussy’s early works appeared before Satie’s most famous work (the three Gymnopédies). 3. Even though their lives intersected in several ways, Debussy differed significantly from Satie. 4. He believed in musical pleasure over rules and tradition; in his Sarabande, he created an atmosphere of sound where what once was labeled “dissonant” and in need of resolution no longer needed to be so.     Debussy as Storyteller: Narrative Expansion In the Trois Chansons de Bilitis William Gibbons Every song cycle presents its audience with a narrative. Such an idea is hardly new; indeed, the idea of an unfolding plot or unifying concept (textual or musical) is central to the concept of the song cycle as opposed to a collection of songs, at least after the mid-nineteenth century.l A great deal of musico­ logical literature devoted to song cycles is aimed at demonstrating that they are cohesive wholes, often connected both musically, by means of key relationships, motivic recall, and similar techniques, and textually, by means of the creation of an overarching plot or concept.2 One type of narrative results from a poetic unit being set to music in its complete state, without alteration. I am interested here, however, in another type of narrative-one that unfolds when a composer chooses to link previously unrelated poems musically, or when a poetic cycle is altered by rearrangement of the songs or omission of one or more poems. This type of song cycle may create its own new narrative, distinct from its literary precursors. In an effort to demonstrate the internally cohesive qualities of these song cycles, typical analyses assume that the narrative is contained entirely within the musical cycle itself-that is, that it makes no external references. I do not mean to disparage this type of analysis, which often yields insight­ ful results; however, this approach ignores the audience's ability to make intertextual connections beyond the bounds of the song cycle at hand.
