  • Promising Young Woman
Promising Young Woman Written and Directed by Emerald Fennell 1 INT. SWEET SIXTEEN’S DANCEFLOOR - NIGHT A super-depressing dancefloor on a Thursday night. 2-For-1 shots and a sticky floor. The kind of last-resort place people end up after work having accidentally nailed ten “just one” drinks. A bored DJ plays the DROELOE remix of “Boys” by Charlie XCX, while the thin and kind of tragic crowd dances. We linger on the men dancing in particular, their bodies, the sweat running down their backs as they grind and thrust. The slow-mo, the lascivious pan-up, the sort of erotic gaze normally reserved for oiled-up music-video hotties. Except we’re looking at regular dudes in chinos with absolutely no dancing ability. INT. SWEET SIXTEEN’S UPSTAIRS BAR - NIGHT By the bar, is a group of guys still in their work suits, ties loosened. They’re mostly good-looking, in their early- thirties, bantering and eyeing up the diminishing talent pool. Among them are JEZ, a shy, sweet guy who is clearly dying to leave, and PAUL, a sweaty Alpha-bro whose super- fragile masculinity is always one rejection away from shattering to pieces. PAUL Fuck her, man. It’s how things are done. It’s just a fucking round of golf! You’d think we were taking clients to a strip club or something- JIM -which we can’t anymore- PAUL -Exactly we can’t even do that anymore because of last year’s Christmas party. JEZ I think it’s because the golf club doesn’t let women play there.

  • Felicity Aston Put to Women from Around the Commonwealth, As She Set out to Create the Most International All-Female Expedition Ever to the Pole
That was the challenge that British adventurer Felicity Aston put to women from around the Commonwealth, as she set out to create the most international all-female expedition ever to the Pole. The team would not be experienced explorers but ‘ordinary’ women who wanted to inspire others to follow their dreams or make a change for the better in their lives. She received more than 800 applications. ‘What is skiing?’ asked someone in Ghana. At the close of 2009, Felicity led a team from places as diverse as Jamaica, India, Singapore and Cyprus – some of whom had never even seen snow or spent the night in a tent before joining the expedition – on one of the toughest journeys on the planet. ‘An uplifting and enthralling feat; I take my fur hat off to all those who answered this call of the white. GIRL-JUNK, SUGAR-FUNK by Natalie Louise Tombasco Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing to the Department of English at Butler University May 2018 1 Introduction “What he carried with him, all he carried with him, was a lack, something like a lack of air, of proper behavior in his lungs, a difficulty that he supposed would go on forever.”—Alice Munro The poems in this collection are chock-full of aromas, twangs, cultural references, environments, and temperaments. They are a mouthful meant to carry a great weight, to create a dichotomy between lack and fullness, to strangle the reader with neglect. Duality is a recurring theme in poems such as “Chop Suey” and “The Transition into Backyard Mermaid,” and is also represented in the way terrains become intertwined in “Home Office Ecotone” and “Down Down from Fenneltown.” Setting is treated as a psychic space where flora and fauna drift between landscapes to embody disorientation, and it perhaps creates a new place where the speaker finds belonging.

Antebellum Written by Gerard Bush + Christopher Renz LIONSGATE 2700 Colorado Ave Santa Monica, CA 90404 WHITE LETTERS ON A BLACK BACKGROUND “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” ~William Faulkner 2 FADE IN – SUPER: LOUISIANA EXT: PLANTATION – EARLY EVENING The gloaming drapes a lonely plantation in burnt oranges and yellows. The Great House sits atop acres of endless, perfectly manicured cotton fields, guarded by giant hundred-year-old moss trees –– replete with cows roaming at pasture, a few scarce chickens and a brood of quarter horses. It is late Summer, the heat is stifling, omnipresent; unrelenting. We follow a little BLONDE GIRL who can be seen skipping past the endless rolling greens, dragonflies buzzing about in her wake. We spot her rosy cheek, from the faint profile –– she appears to be just shy of ten years old, at the most –– her long ponytail whipping in the wind, donned in a floor-length linsey-woolsey dress, buttoned all the way to her throat. Without a care in the world, she grips a tiny fistful of wildflowers. Blindingly white sheets can be seen rolling like ocean waves in the Southern Summer breeze. A few young black women slaves are busy pinning sheets carefully to the clothesline. They’re dressed in ecru-colored, lace Chantilly dresses, which button up all the way to the neck. A trio of grinning Confederate soldiers pass proudly in their army-issued grays and tip their hats toward the women slaves, which the girls acknowledge with odd, forced, plastic smiles; their eyes dead, with a hint of terror, under perspiring brows –– a sinister current shadows the cordial exchange.
