TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals play against the San Jose Sharks at Capital One Arena on Sunday in the second and final meeting between the teams this season. Washington won the first game against San Jose, 5-2, on Dec. 3 at SAP Center in San Jose. Washington is 15-24-1-4 all- time against San Jose. The Capitals have earned points in five straight games against the Sharks (4-0-1).

NOTE OF THE NIGHT 10 Years of Ovi - When the Washington Capitals host the San Jose Sharks today at Capital One Arena, it will mark the 10- year anniversary of Alex Ovechkin’s first game as captain (Jan. 5, 2010 vs. ). Currently, Ovechkin is the second longest tenured captain in franchise history, behind Rod Langway (Langway: Oct. 5, 1982 through Feb. 9, 1993; 10 years, 130 days). In addition, Ovechkin is the fifth-longest tenured captain in the NHL (Boston’s Zdeno Chara: named on Oct. 3, 2006; Pittsburgh’s : May 31, 2007; Chicago’s Jonathan Toews: July 18, 2008; Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu: Oct. 20, 2009). Since being named captain, Ovechkin has led the Capitals to a 466-231-90 record, the most wins and points (1,022) in the NHL during that span. Additionally, since that span, Ovechkin has recorded the most goals (437), power play goals (171), shots (3,463) and the third-most points (781).

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Approaching 500 - Tom Wilson is entering the game against San Jose with points in four of his last six games (1g, 4a) and 27 points on the season. Wilson is on pace for a 26 goal and 53-point season, which would surpass his career high of 22 goals and 40 points set last season. Over his last 82 games, which began on Jan. 6, 2019, Wilson has recorded 23 goals and 24 assists. Additionally, Wilson is on pace for 126 penalty minutes this year, which would set a new career low after recording 128 penalty minutes last season. In addition, Wilson is five games shy of reaching the 500 game mark. He would become the 28th player in franchise history to reach the mark and would be the third player from the 2012 NHL Draft class to play 500 games (Alex Galchenyuk: 520 games; Morgan Rielly: 511 games).

Johnny All-Star - John Carlson was selected to his second straight NHL All-Star Game. He becomes the seventh defenseman in franchise history to receive multiple All-Star Game selections. This season, he ranks first among defensemen in points (51) and assists (38), tied for second in goals (13) and tied for fourth among all players in assists, trailing only Edmonton’s Connor McDavid (42) and Leon Draisaitl (41) and Boston’s (40). Carlson became the first defenseman since in 1994-95 to record 50 points in his team’s first 40 games and eclipsed former Capital Mike Green’s 43 game mark in 2008-09 (22g, 28a), establishing a new franchise record among defensemen. Only five defensemen, including Carlson and Coffey, have recorded 50 points in 40 games since 1979-80 (Phil Housley, and Al MacInnis). Carlson is on pace for 100 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; , Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch: each once).

Holtbeast - Braden Holtby is expected to start against San Jose. Holtby was recently named to the 2020 NHL All-Star Game and will be making his fifth straight All-Star Game appearance. Holtby’s five All-Star Game selections is tied for the second most in franchise history (Alex Ovechkin: 11; Peter Bondra and Rod Langway: 5) and the most by a Capitals’ goaltender. Only two other active goaltenders have participated in at least five NHL All-Star Games (Montreal’s Carey Price: 6; New York’s : 5). Holtby has posted a record of 17-6-4 with a 2.95 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 28 games for the Capitals this season. The Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, native is tied for fifth in the NHL in wins (17). Holtby has allowed two goals or fewer in 12 of his 29 games this season, with the Capitals posting a record of 11-0-1 in those games.

Pacing the League – The Capitals became the first team to 60 standing points (28-9-5) this season on Friday, besting the idle (24-7-11, 59 points) and St. Louis Blues (26-10-6, 58 points). Washington (42 games) required the second-fewest games in franchise history to reach the benchmark, tying the 2016-17 season. The only campaign to require fewer contests: 2015-16 (39 games). The Capitals have won the Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's top team three times in their franchise history (2009-10, 2015-16, 2016-17). Through 42 games of each of those seasons, the Capitals are tied for second in points among those teams, six points shy of the 2015-16 team's total, which is the highest 40-game point total in franchise history.

Season Wins Losses OT Points Goals For Goals Against

2015-16 32 7 3 67 137 89

2019-20 28 9 5 61 147 123

2016-17 28 9 5 61 125 82

2009-10 25 11 6 56 146 116

The Capitals' 61 points through 42 games are tied for the fifth-highest point total through 42 games by any team since 2015-16 and five points shy of the 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning (66 points) for the most during this span. The Capitals are the only team in the NHL to record at least 61 points through 42 games three times in the last five seasons.

Power Play - The Capitals have recorded five power play goals on 16 opportunities (31.3) in four games since the Christmas break. During that span, the Capitals have gotten a power play goal from four different players (Evgeny Kuznetsov: 2; Lars Eller, T.J. Oshie and Alex Ovechkin: 1). This season, the Capitals are 29 for 131 on the power play (22.1 percent), ranking 11th in the NHL. Should the Capitals maintain a power play percentage of at least 20 percent this season, it will be the eighth consecutive season the Capitals have converted at that rate, already holding the longest active streak in the NHL with seven straight seasons (the Boston Bruins have the second-longest active streak of four consecutive seasons). When the Capitals score a power play goal this season, Washington holds a 17-4-1 record this season.

QUICK HITS

HistOvi – At 682 career goals, Alex Ovechkin is three goals shy of passing Teemu Selanne (684) for the 11th most goals in NHL history. On pace for 48 goals this season, Ovechkin, who turned 34 on Sept. 17, is aiming to become the second player in NHL history to record at least 50 goals in a season at the age of 34 or older (John Bucyk: 51 goals in 1970-71 at the age of 35).

Streaking O - With an assist last night against the Carolina Hurricanes, Alex Ovechkin extended his point streak to five games (2g, 3a), his second point streak of at least five games this season (nine games, Oct. 8 through Oct 24: 8g, 5a).

Multi Kuzy - Evgeny Kuznetsov recorded a goal and an assist on Friday against the Carolina Hurricanes, his second-straight game with multiple points and his fourth-straight game with a point (4g, 2a). Kuznetsov is on pace for 30 goals this season, which would be a new career high.

Evens for V - Jakub Vrana scored a goal against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. This season, All 16 of Vrana's goals have come at even strength, which is tied for the fifth most in the NHL.

CLAMPING DOWN...Since Interim Head Coach Bob Boughner's first game on Dec. 12, the club has allowed the fifth fewest goals in the league (29). San Jose has allowed two goals or fewer five times in 10 games and three goals or less eight times. In that span, Aaron Dell has earned a 3-2-1 record, 2.51 GAA and .921 SV% and Martin Jones is 1-3-0 with a 2.54 GAA and .904 SV%.

PLANE AND SIMPLE...The Sharks embark on a two-month stretch where the team is on the road for 16 of their next 25 games through the end of February. Entering Dec. 31, the Sharks had played only 17 road games which was tied for the third fewest in the NHL, behind only Florida and Tampa. The Sharks also will travel to the East two separate times (Dec. 31-Jan. 4; Feb. 20-25) and only play a Pacific foe away from SAP Center four times (ARI, VAN, CGY, EDM) in that span. Including March, the Sharks play away from SAP Center 24 out of their next 40 times starting Dec. 31.

PAIR OF ACES...Dec. 28 vs PHI, Mario Ferraro and Joel Kellman each recorded their first career NHL goals to become the sixth set of Sharks teammates (third set of NHL teammates this season) in franchise history to each log their first career NHL goal in the same game. A look at the list below: DATE OPPONENT PLAYERS

MILESTONE MAN...Joe Thornton reached the 1,600 game plateau with his appearance on 12/12 vs the NY Rangers. Thornton became the 12th player in NHL history to reach the mark and joined Patrick Marleau as active players with 1,600 NHL games, who both became a part of history as they became the first teammates in NHL history to play in the same game having 1,600 regular- season games on their resume. He is also the sixth player in NHL history to have 400 goals, 1,000 assists and 1,600 games in his career.

MAKING HIS MARC... Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic became the first San Jose Sharks blueliner to reach 1,000 games played with the franchise on 12/14 vs VAN. He's was the 17th defenseman in NHL history to skate in at least 1,000 games with one franchise. Vlasic's exceptional defensive abilities have been on full display since his debut on Oct. 5, 2006 vs. STL. Since 2011, Vlasic ranks seventh among NHL defensemen in minor penalties taken (66, min. 500 games), averaging 25 seconds of penalty time per game. He is now only one of two skaters this season to have yet to take a penalty (min. 30 games). He also ranks fifth in the NHL in blocked shots (1,729) since his debut in 2006-07. Over 13 seasons, Vlasic has been a plus-rating in all but two. No other defenseman has more (Zdeno Chara, BOS; B. Orpik both have 11) since the 2006-07 season.

POWER OUTAGE...The Sharks currently own the best penalty kill unit in the NHL, killing off 88.1% of their disadvantages. San Jose leads the NHL in home PK percentage (91.2%, 62-68) and are 85.5% on the road (65-76), third in the NHL. The Sharks also lead the NHL for the least amount of total power-play goals against with 17. Dating back to the start of the 2015-16 season, the Sharks sport the fourth-best penalty kill unit at 82.5% with Marc-Edouard Vlasic leading all Sharks skaters in PK TOI (854:02) and Melker Karlsson leading Sharks forwards (476:32).

MODEL OF CONSISTENCY…Since being named the team’s general manager on May 13, 2003, Doug Wilson has strategically built the San Jose Sharks into one of the NHL’s top franchises through strong drafting, shrewd trades and timely free agent signings. In his 15 seasons in charge of the Sharks hockey department, Wilson has guided the team to its most successful era since the franchise’s inception, capturing a Presidents’ Trophy (2009), five Pacific Division titles, advancing to the Western Conference Final on five occasions (2004, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2019) and appearing in the Stanley Cup Final (2016). Wilson served his 1,200th career game as GM for the Sharks against NSH on 10/8/19 to become the 24th GM in league history to reach the mark and the fifth active in the NHL and later achieved his 700th win against CBJ on 1/4/20. In his tenure as general manager, San Jose co-leads NHL clubs in Stanley Cup Playoff rounds (30), tied with only Pittsburgh, and no other franchise has more wins than the Sharks (700): RANK TEAM GP W L OT PTS PTS%
