The theme this year was videoed horse racing and the enthusiasm and support for the horses gathered momentum as the night progressed! No one ‘lost their shirt’. Not only was it a fabulous social event, but everyone got into the spirit of things with support of all areas including fundraising from raffle tickets to ‘selling of the horses’, bar sales (no problem at all with that one!), our silent auction items plus having a punt on a horse for as low as $1. (No excuses from anyone next year! Entry tickets were only $5!) For those who missed the evening, that would be called a serious error of judgment. However, you can make amends next year!! Yes our numbers were significantly down on last year and we had some feedback on the possible reasons. It was ‘too cold, I am too old, too young, too middle aged!!!!!!!!!!’ At the end of the day, all excuses are equal if they stopped you from being with us! Some were not sure how the videoed horseracing would work and what sort of expense would be involved. The big advantage over the mouse racing was that it was not expensive to get involved. The fact that you could bet on a horse from as little as $1 meant that everyone could have some fun without taking a second mortgage on the house! So, the message for next year is to book a table and fully support our main fundraising event for the year. All the money goes to our club and in turn to our kids and it a great opportunity for you to meet other families. You don’t always get an opportunity on match days to have a good conversation and get to know others. You get that opportunity at a function like this. A big ‘thank you’ to all teams who provided for the raffle items with either retail vouchers or the putting together the most magnificent hampers They were definitely the highlight of the night and some suggested the raffles were ‘rigged’ as some ladies cleaned up with 3,4 even 5 prizes! They key next year is to buy more tickets to have more chances. Special thanks to our MC, President Nugget whose voice only just held out. Thanks also to our committee who worked in the background. Comments from Cory Lake (Lions 9’s) ‘I just wanted to pass on my congrats for what was great night on Saturday. This was the first one I had been to for the club and I will be definitely going again and also promoting it a lot more next time around. Well done and thanks’ Our Appreciation Night was held on 27 Aug at Percy Doyle. This is the President and Committees way of saying THANKYOU’ to all who contribute to the smooth running of our club and it is also a way for us to acknowledge the wonderful support received from our many sponsors. Suggest you look at the list on our website and support these companies as much as possible. If they are supporting us then we should support them whenever possible. After 18 weeks, the home and away season has come to a close and finals footy officially begins. Finals will be played across Saturday and Sunday at various venues across the west over the next four weekends, with the Division 3 and 2 Grand Finals scheduled for September 9 and 10. The Division 1 Grand Final will be played on either September 16 or 17 at VU Whitten Oval. This season has been an exciting one and this year’s finals series is shaping up to be one of the best to date. Deer Park are chasing their fifth consecutive Division 1 premiership. Spotswood and Sunshine, the only two teams to beat the Lions, are hot on their heels. In Division 2, North Footscray and the Yarraville Seddon Eagles will reignite their rivalry and Jason Cloke’s Parkside will go head-to-head with the Wyndham Suns’ potent WRFL Footy forward line. Record Finals footy is a different ball game to the regular season, so it should be an entertaining Western Region end to the season. Football League Also, a special shout out to Hoppers Crossing captain Mathew Ryan, who will play game number 400 on Sunday. President Meredith Angwin Ryan has been a stalwart for the Warriors for more than 20 years and has been a great leader and personality of our league.

  • February Shed News
SHED NEWS The Newsletter of the Crows Supporters Group – February 2019 THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH – “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” KEEP ON SUPPORTING! from our President Peter Kauschke Hello everyone and welcome to season 2019. The year kicked off with our assistance at the “CROWS FAN FAIR” in January. We were unable to have our usual sausage sizzle this year as the Club arranged for food vans to be present. However, we were able to sell our merchandise and photos and to sign people up for membership of the Group. Thank you to all of our committee members and volunteers who assisted with the day. Well done everyone. A wonderful effort in the heat! Banner has now commenced at our new ‘home’, the Christian Family Centre, 185 Fredrick Road, Seaton. Everyone is always welcome to come along, have a look at how it all happens and join in the fun. Work at the moment is mainly on the banners for our AFLW team. The AFLW season is well underway and there was a good turnout of enthusiastic supporters at Norwood for the girls’ first game. Unfortunately, it was not the desired result for us. The Crows girls played great footy but sadly they could not kick straight on the night, and this cost them a valuable win over last season’s premiers. Our Vice President, Tony Trist, has been working his fingers to the bone to get our website up and running and it is amazing. Well worth having a look at and exploring it at length.

  • Sydeny AFL Season Opener Release 2
MEDIA RELEASE - AFL (NSW/ACT) Wednesday, April 2 Henson Park to host five Sydney AFL matches this Saturday With the celebrations for 150 years of Australian Football underway, Sydney AFL will be creating some history of its own this weekend, with an entire round of senior football scheduled over one day at Henson Park for the season opener. This Saturday, footy fans will be treated to over 12 hours of Australian Football action, with all five Round One matches of the Sydney AFL taking place at the newly renovated facility. Henson Park, home of the Newtown Jets, has recently undergone a $250,000 upgrade, and this will be the first opportunity for Sydney AFL to take centre stage at the refurbished ground. Garry Burkinshaw, Senior Football Operations Coordinator for AFL (NSW/ACT) said that this was an exciting milestone for the Sydney AFL competition and signaled the leagues continued development as a premier sporting competition. “This is an important year for Australian Football across all levels of competition and Sydney AFL is no exception. As a competition the standard and support is growing rapidly and being able to provide fans with an entire day and night of Australian Football is a fantastic opportunity. “It is also the perfect platform to showcase some of the emerging talent coming through. Fans will be able to see the next generation of AFL stars in action with many of the NSW Rams players taking part in matches, along with some of the AFL Scholarship holders,” said Burkinshaw. The Sydney AFL competition has developed some true champions over the years with no less than 13 players currently on AFL lists.
