RESUMO Em 1904, chegou ao Brasil um grupo de empresários a fim de investirem e explorarem o transporte ferroviário. Tiveram como principal representante Percival Farquhar, que desempenhou atividades que foram desde os serviços públicos, como distribuição de energia, até o transporte. Em 1906, o grupo cria a Brazil Railway Company, um holding, e assume a grande maioria das concessões das ferrovias brasileiras. Suas atividades estavam concentradas principalmente no Sul e Sudeste do país. A administração de Farquhar chegou até os anos de 1920, quando mudam a gestão devido a uma crise econômica. A Brazil Railway Company tem características peculiares: desenvolveu, além do transporte ferroviário, a colonização e atividades extrativistas, como a exploração da madeira no Sul e carne bovina congelada. Nossa pesquisa tem por intuito estudar as atividades ferroviárias desse holding no Sul e Sudeste do país, entre os anos 1904 até 1920. Utilizamos como fonte os documentos oficiais da própria empresa, periódicos e Relatórios Ministeriais, além de documentações pessoais, como cartas e Ofícios de Farquhar e outros membros do grupo. ABSTRACT In 1904, a group of businessmen arrived in Brazil to invest and explore rail transport. Their main representative was Percival Farquhar, who performed activities ranging from utilities such as power distribution to transportation. In 1906, the group creates Brazil Railway Company, a holding company, and takes over the vast majority of Brazilian railroad concessions. Its activities were concentrated mainly in the South and Southeast of the country. Farquhar's administration arrived until the 1920s, when management changed due to an economic crisis. The Brazil Railway Company has peculiar characteristics: it has developed, in addition to rail transportation, colonization and extractive activities, such as the exploitation of timber in the South and frozen beef. Our research aims to study the railway activities of this holding in the South and Southeast of the country, from 1904 to 1920. We use as source the official documents of the company itself, periodicals and Ministerial Reports, as well as personal documentation, such as letters and Crafts of Farquhar and other members of the group KEYWORDS: Railways.     Moralizing Commerce on the Frontier: Cattle and Jerky Smuggling in Mato Grosso, 1870s-1930s Robert W. Wilcox 1 ABSTRACT Beginning in the late nineteenth century a promising ranching sector developed on the Mato Grosso frontier with Paraguay. The most lucrative markets for cattle products were in neighboring Paraguay, Uruguay, and in the southeast of Brazil. For the most part markets were distant from the region of production, while fiscal revenues were always limited, hence the state attempted to impose its regulations and taxes as it could. Residents found their incomes were constrained at the best of times, and any “outside” impositions were simply obstacles to the prosperity of their communities and businesses. The result was that like similar regions across the globe cattle and cattle product smuggling became normal. The profits were significant enough that even local government officials were involved. The result was a long-running “battle” between the state and local producers to tap the potential promised by ranching that simultaneously promoted and inhibited the development of the region. This article explores these contradictory aspects of ranching settlement along the Brazil-Paraguay border. Kauffman: The Unknown Lands: Nature, Knowledge, and Society in the Pantanal of Brazil and Bolivia (Under the direction of Cynthia Radding) This dissertation examines the modern history of the Pantanal, a seasonally-flooded wetland in the upper Paraguay River watershed at the border between Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Scientists and environmentalists currently regard the Pantanal as a wildlife-rich and “pristine” ecosystem threatened by uncontrolled development. I seek to understand the historical roots of these perceptions through an analysis of the transnational set of social actors – naturalists, boundary officials, indigenous peoples, field scientists, merchants, ranchers, cowboys, and hunters – who made discursive and material claims upon the Pantanal from 1870 to 1967. During this period, the Pantanal experienced rapid integration into global flows of commerce and a network of ranchers, merchants, and government officials formed to profit from a growing trade in cattle products and other commodities, including ipecacuanha, quebracho, and wild animal products. To justify their efforts to control space and the movement of people and goods through the Pantanal, these groups perpetuated a myth of isolation with origins in the colonial period.

    AMAZONIAN CARTOGRAPHIES: MAPPING NOVELS AND THE PRODUCTION OF SPACE IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY LATIN AMERICA by Amanda Mignonne Smith A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June 2015 © 2015 Amanda Mignonne Smith All Rights Reserved Abstract The decline of the first Amazonian Rubber Boom in 1912 was only the beginning of Amazonia’s emergence as an important literary territory. This dissertation explores how Latin American intellectuals throughout the twentieth century grapple in their novels with the ways that extractive processes at different historical moments surveyed, transformed, and devastated Amazonia and how their resulting literary cartographies have intervened in Amazonian spaces. Scholars have recently begun to consider the representation of Amazonia across Latin American fiction, addressing the void in literary criticism on this region commonly relegated to anthropological, biological, and geographical studies. However, the role that literature has played in shaping Amazonia has not received sufficient attention. My research focuses on authors from Amazonian countries whose work writes against processes such as state mapping, geographic curriculum, railroad construction, and extractivism that have codified Amazonia for integration into cultural and economic projects. I examine how their novels try to account for geographic experiences elided for the sake of those projects as well as how their efforts to design what they see as more faithful literary “maps” often produce other problematic omissions. I engage the problem of the translation of space from observation to representation—literary and otherwise—and I theorize how these representations work to create Amazonia in their image.
