My interest in aircraft at Old Buckenham started several years ago and recently David Moth and I have been involved in creating a web-based photographic record of visiting !aircraft, “OLDBUCKSHOTS”. With December 2013 being the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the 453rd Bomb Group, I thought it appropriate to try to put together a record of all the B24 Liberators that were based at Old Buckenham during World War II. I was particularly interested in recording the individual aircraft identities including the names the crews gave their aircraft. (Details of !missions flown and aircrews are already well covered in existing publications.) My initial research was based on what I was able to glean from existing published material, and, as far as I am aware, the information I have put together in this booklet is !not available in this format anywhere else. The project became even more interesting when I had the pleasure of meeting Pat Ramm who, as a schoolboy during the war, was a frequent visitor to Old Buckenham airfield. He very kindly allowed me to copy his large collection of photographs and also shared his clear memories of the period with me. This spurred me on to undertake more thorough !research, the results of which I am now able to share with you. I am also indebted to the generous help from the members of the 453rd Memorial Association in particular to Tom Brittan for sharing his personal records and also to Tim !Ramsey, without whom this booklet would not have been possible. -

Muffled Voices in Animation. Gender Roles and Black Stereotypes in Warner Bros

GENDER ROLES AND BLACK STEREOTYPES IN WARNER BROS. CARTOONS: FROM HONEY TO BABS BUNNY Xavier FUSTER BURGUERA 1 Abstract: This essay will use a Tiny Toons episode, “Fields of Honey”, as an excuse to survey stereotypical female and racial roles depicted in the most representative cartoons of the 20 th century. It is particularly relevant to go back to a 1990s cartoon series since, in that decade, Western animation was undergoing crucial changes in its conception which would determine significantly the upcoming animated instalments of the new millennium. Moreover, contemporary cartoonists are now those grown-up children that watched the earlier American cartoons whose allegedly unconscious female discrimination and “innocent” racism might somehow have been fossilised among its audience and become thus perpetuated in the culture and imaginary of the globalised world. Finally, it is also important to be acquainted with the contents of cartoons understood as children’s products, especially in a period where television is taking over most of the parental duties and guidance in children’s development into adulthood. Key words: popular culture, media and animation studies, gender roles, black stereotypes, Warner Bros., Tiny Toons. 1. Damsels in Discourse: Consuming and Producing
citation: Wohlwend, K. E. (2009). Damsels in discourse: Girls consuming and producing gendered identity texts through Disney Princess play. Reading Research Quarterly, 44(1), 57-83. doi: 10.1598/rrq.44.1.3 Damsels in Discourse: Girls Consuming and Producing Identity Texts Through Disney Princess Play Karen Wohlwend Indiana University Abstract Drawing upon theories that reconceptualize toys and artifacts as identity texts, this study employs mediated discourse analysis to examine children’s videotaped writing and play interactions with princess dolls and stories in one kindergarten classroom. The study reported here is part of a three-year ethnographic study of literacy play in U.S. early-childhood classrooms. The specific focus here is on young girls who are avid Disney Princess fans and how they address the gendered identities and discourses attached to the popular films and franchised toys. The study employs an activity model design that incorporates ethnographic microanalysis of social practices in the classroom, design conventions in toys and drawings, negotiated meanings in play, and identities situated in discourses. The commercially given gendered princess identities of the dolls, consumer expectations about the dolls, the author identities in books and storyboards associated with the dolls, and expectations related to writing production, influenced how the girls upheld, challenged, or transformed the meanings they negotiated for princess storylines and their gender expectations which influenced who participated in play scenarios and who assumed leadership roles in peer and classroom cultures. When the girls played with Disney Princess dolls during writing workshop, they animated identities sedimented into toys and texts. Regular opportunities to play with toys during writing workshop allowed children to improvise and revise character actions, layering new story meanings and identities onto old. -
Justice League: Origins
JUSTICE LEAGUE: ORIGINS Written by Chad Handley [email protected] EXT. PARK - DAY An idyllic American park from our Rockwellian past. A pick- up truck pulls up onto a nearby gravel lot. INT. PICK-UP TRUCK - DAY MARTHA KENT (30s) stalls the engine. Her young son, CLARK, (7) apprehensively peeks out at the park from just under the window. MARTHA KENT Go on, Clark. Scoot. CLARK Can’t I go with you? MARTHA KENT No, you may not. A woman is entitled to shop on her own once in a blue moon. And it’s high time you made friends your own age. Clark watches a group of bigger, rowdier boys play baseball on a diamond in the park. CLARK They won’t like me. MARTHA KENT How will you know unless you try? Go on. I’ll be back before you know it. EXT. PARK - BASEBALL DIAMOND - MOMENTS LATER Clark watches the other kids play from afar - too scared to approach. He is about to give up when a fly ball plops on the ground at his feet. He stares at it, unsure of what to do. BIG KID 1 (yelling) Yo, kid. Little help? Clark picks up the ball. Unsure he can throw the distance, he hesitates. Rolls the ball over instead. It stops halfway to Big Kid 1, who rolls his eyes, runs over and picks it up. 2. BIG KID 1 (CONT’D) Nice throw. The other kids laugh at him. Humiliated, Clark puts his hands in his pockets and walks away. Big Kid 2 advances on Big Kid 1; takes the ball away from him. -

1 Practicing Resurrection W. Danaher 4Th Class Introduction/Review
1 Practicing Resurrection W. Danaher 4th Class Introduction/Review: Looking at Lent as a Journey from Death to Life The Season of Lent is often viewed as a journey in which we are saved from our sins. Last Sunday, we began Lent by revisiting Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, and we were invited in the Collect for that day (the summary prayer at the beginning of the Liturgy) to recognize the “weaknesses of each of us.” As we make our way in Lent, our Collect trace out a particular path of transformation: penance (BCP Collect for the Second Sunday of Lent), renewal (BCP Collect for the Third Sunday of Lent), refreshment (BCP Collect for the Fourth Sunday of Lent), and grace (BCP Collect for the Fifth Sunday in Lent). By doing so, our liturgies follow a well-worn path and assign to us traditional readings that have been followed for many years. The goal of these readings is to point us in the direction of the Atonement -- on what it takes for us to be made right with God, which Christians believe happened at the crucifixion, when Jesus died for our sins on the cross. On the cross, Jesus offered a sacrifice, or prayer, that we could not offer on our behalf so that we would find forgiveness for all the ways that we have been less than who God created us to be. On the cross, Jesus defeated the power of death, died for our sins, and showed us God’s infinite love for us. However, I believe there is another way to go through Lent, which has been obscured by this familiar path.
