St Cuthbert Story
Cuthbert was born about the year 634 (about 1400 years ago!) He lived in Melrose in Southern Scotland. He liked to walk in the hills. One night, when he was helping to look after sheep he thought he saw angels taking a soul to heaven. A few days later he found out Saint Aidan had died. Cuthbert decided to become a monk. He became a monk at the monastery in Melrose where he met Boisil, the prior of the monastery. Boisil taught Cuthbert for 6 years. Before Boisil died, he told Cuthbert he would be a Bishop one day. Cuthbert liked to visit lonely farms and villages. Crowds of people came to visit him. He lived at Melrose monastery for 13 years. Cuthbert was sent to be Prior of Lindisfarne. Cuthbert taught the monks the new Roman church rules. Some of the monks did not like the new rules and Cuthbert had to be very patient with them. After 12 years, Cuthbert went to live on a quiet island 7 miles away from Lindisfarne. Cuthbert lived on this small island for 3 years. He grew barley and vegetables and his monks dug a well and built a guest house for visitors. The King asked Cuthbert to be Bishop of Hexham. Cuthbert didn’t want to but he still remembered what Boisil had said. Cuthbert did not want to be Bishop of Hexham but agreed to be Bishop of Lindisfarne instead. He was very sad to have to leave his small island. Cuthbert was Bishop of Lindisfarne for 2 years. The people loved him. -

Grace Episcopal Cathedral June 2018 Topeka, Kansas Vol. 92, No. 6 From the Dean. An Easter Epiphany Dear Friends, By the time you read this last Chimes message from me, I will have done my last service at Grace and will, in fact, be on vacation before starting a new part- time job as interim pastor at St. Paul’s in Leavenworth while they are searching for a new rector. I’ll be working four days a week, including Sundays and have a letter of agreement for 12 months. This will give me time to think through some things and make important decisions Farewell, about where I want to be and what I want to do for the next several years Dean Lipscomb of my life. So, there’s that. And then, there’s this. It has been almost a year since Robyn’s death, and several months of sickness before that. In fact, it was Good Friday, 2017 that we were given the diagnosis of Stage 4 lung and bone cancer and told nothing could be done. I know, as I leave this community that walked through that time with me, many of you are concerned about how I am going to get along. So, I want to tell you a story that I’ve shared with several small groups, about what happened to me on Easter Sunday. As I said, Good Friday last year, Robyn was diagnosed with terminal continued on page 2 From the Dean Steve Lipscomb named “Dean Emeritus” cancer, after being treated the prior two months for what we (and the Dean Steve Lipscomb was honored on Pentecost with the title of Dean doctors) thought was a persistent Emeritus at Grace Cathedral. -
History of Old Melrose (“Mail Ros”)
History of Old Melrose (“Mail Ros”) The site was founded by King Oswald of Northumbria, this area being within the old kingdom of Northumbria. Oswald had spent much of his youth on Iona and was a Christian and he wanted to bring the Christian message to the lands where he was King between 633 and 642 AD. He invited St Aidan and 12 monks from Iona to travel to Northumbria and St Aidan first established “Mail Ros” before setting off further to establish a monastic community on the Holy Island. One of the monks was St Boisil and he became the 2nd Prior of the “Mail Ros” monastery. On the death of St Aidan 651-652AD Cuthbert had a vision of Heaven and he travelled to “Mail Ros” and became a monk under the guidance of St Boisil, whom he then succeeded as the 3rd Prior. The name Melrose is thought to be derived from “Mail Ros”, this meaning “Bare headland” and was the description of the peninsula of land surrounded by the Tweed on three sides and separated from the rest of the land by the Earthen Vallum. At the time of the early monks the headland would have had few trees, hence the description “bare”. A monastic Vallum was typically a deep ditch or series of ditches that enclosed an early Christian monastery. They were common in northern Britain and Ireland in the 5th to 9th centuries. The Vallum served several purposes. It would have provides some defensive protection as well as helping to keep in the monastic livestock. -

Specifically focused on the period encompassing the episcopates of Wærferth and Oswald (c. 870 to 992), this survey examines a time of intense administrative activity at Worcester, contemporaneous with significant transformations in the political and cultural life of Anglo-Saxon England more generally. -

Barrett Professor Emerita Marianne Kalinke ii ABSTRACT “Apostolic Discourse and Christian Identity in Anglo-Saxon Literature” argues that Anglo-Saxon religious writers used traditions about the apostles to inspire and interpret their peoples’ own missionary ambitions abroad, to represent England itself as a center of religious authority, and to articulate a particular conception of inspired authorship. This study traces the formation and adaptation of apostolic discourse (a shared but evolving language based on biblical and literary models) through a series of Latin and vernacular works including the letters of Boniface, the early vitae of the Anglo- Saxon missionary saints, the Old English poetry of Cynewulf, and the anonymous poem Andreas. This study demonstrates how Anglo-Saxon authors appropriated the experiences and the authority of the apostles to fashion Christian identities for members of the emerging English church in the seventh and eighth centuries, and for vernacular religious poets and their readers in the later Anglo-Saxon period. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am indebted to many people for their help and support throughout the duration of this dissertation project. -

Chapter 22 St Wærburh: The Multiple Identities of a Regional Saint Alan Thacker The saint’s cult discussed in this chapter originated in Mercia but was promot- ed over a wide area, including Chester and, eventually, a monastery which as been described as “to all intents and purposes a West Saxon institution.”1 As such it forms a particularly fitting subject for a volume in honour of Barbara Yorke who has written so extensively and influentially about Anglo-Saxon Wes- sex in particular and the royal women of Anglo-Saxon England as a whole. This chapter has had an extremely long gestation—I first wrote about St Wærburh in the early 1980s—and it is with great pleasure that I finally present it here to a scholar whose work has made us all rethink our views about Anglo-Saxon kingship and the religious communities and cults that it engendered. The traditions relating to St Wærburh and her relics are well-known. She was the daughter of King Wulfhere of Mercia (657–75) and his wife Eormen- hild, and through her mother was closely connected with both the Kentish and East Anglian royal families. She early showed a disposition towards the reli- gious life, and entered the monastery of Ely where her great aunt Æthelthryth was abbess. She remained for some time at Ely, where according to some sourc- es she succeeded her grandmother Seaxburh and her mother Eormenhild as abbess, but was recalled to Mercia by her uncle, King Æthelred, Wulfhere’s brother and successor (675–704), and given authority over the nunneries of his kingdom. -

In it, I study the hagiographies written about the royal female saints of Ely by the Flemish monk Goscelin of Saint-Bertin in the late eleventh century as a form of postcolonial literature and memory creation. Goscelin was a renowned writer of Anglo-Saxon saints’ lives. Through his hagiographies he not only created images of England’s Christian past that emphasized its pious, sophisticated rulers and close ties to the papacy, he engaged in political commentary and criticism. -

This study is meant to illuminate the lives of the women in the Anglo-Norman chronicles at every stage of life. While many modern books have addressed medieval women, they have attempted to deal with women more generally, looking at many areas and societies over hundreds of years. Other modern historians have focused on a few select women using evidence from the same Anglo-Norman chronicles used in this study.
