The main aims of the organisation are to provide support to and highlight the plight of ex- Muslims, challenge Sharia and apostasy laws and take a stand for reason, universal rights and secularism. We work to support lasting change for a better society, championing ideas for the one life we have. Since 1896, our work has been helping people be happier and more fulfilled. By bringing non-religious people together we help them develop their own views and an understanding of the world around them. Together with our partners Humanist Society Scotland, we speak for 100,000 members and supporters and over 100 members of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group. Through our ceremonies, pastoral support, education services, and campaigning work, we advance free thinking and freedom of choice so everyone can live in a fair and equal society. We work closely with Humanists International, founded in 1952 as the global representative body of the humanist movement, with over 170 member organisations in over 70 countries, and of which our Chief Executive is also the current President. We are also a member of the European Humanist Federation (EHF). We have good relations with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), meeting regularly with ministers and officials. We are on the steering group of the UK Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) Forum and are an active member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on FoRB. We are accredited at the UN Human Rights Council – the only national humanist group to hold such accreditation – and make interventions there every session. We contribute annually to Humanists International’s Freedom of Thought Report1; and co-founded the End Blasphemy Laws campaign,2 which has successfully prompted ten countries to repeal their blasphemy laws since it was founded in 2015. -

IHEU is the world federation of organizations making up the global humanist movement, inclusive of all nontheistic traditions such as humanist, atheist, rationalist, secularist, laique, ethical culture, freethought, and skeptic. Shipton et al.: Humanism and Christianity: Shared Values? WARREN SHIPTON, YOUSSRY GUIRGUIS, AND NOLA TUDU Humanism and Christianity: Shared Values? Introduction The word humanism is derived from the Latin humanitas that originally meant the study of human nature. The idea was to elevate humanity with a focus on human dignity and potential through education (Ritchie and Spencer 2014:15, 16). The meaning attributed to the word humanism, in its broadest sense, allowed Christians and non-believers initially to oc- cupy common territory (64-78). In the early-middle Christian era, some thinkers sought to acquaint themselves with the achievements, literature, and thought of past civilizations, particularly Greek, with a view to rec- onciling theology with the philosophy of the classical philosophers (New World Encyclopedia n.d.; Odom 1977:126-128, 183-186). Outside Christian circles, elements supportive of the pre-eminence of human thought and abilities have long been seen among philosophers; however, not all forms of humanism were atheistic, as seen in Confucian thought (Gupta 2000:8- 12). There also are those who have been called “religious” or “spiritual” humanists (Eller 2010:10). The Medieval civilization that followed the collapse of the Roman Em- pire (AD 476) was marked by the rule of kings with nobles supporting the king in return for privileges. The majority of the population existed in serfdom; the Church reigned supreme. A change came in the 14th century helped by the fact that famine and disease created disaster. The abuses in the Church and the pessimism prevalent in society created a climate for change in Europe. -

Ethical Record The Proceedings of the South Place Ethical Society Vol. 113 No. 9 £1.50 October 2008 THE ANNUAL REUNION OF KINDRED SOCIETIES Jennifer R Jeynes When I became Programme Co-ordinator for the Ethical Society, some years ago now, I found that our Autumn Lecture programme was preceded, after the summer break, by an Annual Reunion of the Kindred Humanist Organisations. I thought this was a very good idea in principle, to stand (or sit) together, united by the conviction that it is possible to live a good, ethical (and musical) life without imaginary supernatural support. I became persuaded that Humanists/Secularists should be united by the overriding importance of our Weltanschaung (or life stance to use the inelegant English equivalent). On 21 September I felt vindicated (if that is not too hyperbolic an expression) as over 70 people heard News and Greetings from our usual friends, the British Humanist Association, the National Secular Society and the Rationalist Association (formerly the Rationalist Press Association) but also the Sonnenberg Association of Great Britain, the Freethought History Research Group (of which the late Virginia Clark and I were founding members) and most recently, the CEMB (Council of Ex Muslims) whose members are not only principled but courageous. Memorial Tribute 3 | 9 COMMEMORATION Reflections on the Meaning of a Tragedy Ephraim Nissan The Editorial of the 2015 volume of International Studies in Humour is followed by a section of memorial tributes, made a tragic necessity by the events of 7 January in Paris, which made the new year an annus horribilis for the organised production of humour. Thanks to Nelly Feuerhahn, editor of Humoresques, the present journal is able to publish two memorial tributes from France, by Yves Frémion, an expert whom she introduced as “a friend of mine, a great specialist of Charlie Hebdo and other press”, and he in turn wrote to “suggest a brief history of this magazine and a portrait of the five cartoonists killed”. This indeed is the topic of his two texts published here, in that order. He is in the process of completing a history of France’s political cartoons, and — to quote from an email, but see his formal biosketch in his first contribution — is the president of the Institut de Zygomatique appliquée (research about humour), former columnist about humour history in ‘Fluide glacial’ (best comics magazine in France) and editor-in-chief of ‘Papiers Nickelés’ (review about comics, cartoon, illustration, stamps, popular images and engraving). My last publication in the UK was the Charb obituary in The Guardian in January. At the very end of his second memorial tribute, Frémion points out what — apart from the specific losses for France, with the violent death of such veteran cartoonists as Cabu — arguably is the most important and general impact we are now witnessing: “Dessiner est devenu dangereux. -

Annual Report 2015 challenging religious privilege ABOUT THE NATIONAL SECULAR SOCIETY Founded in 1866, we work towards a society in which all citizens, regardless of religious belief, or lack of religious belief, can live together fairly and cohesively. We campaign for a secular democracy with a separation of religion and state, where everyone’s Human Rights are respected equally. This report covers the period October 2014 – October 2015 THE SECULAR CHARTER Our campaigning and policy objectives are guided by our Secular Charter.
