A world that is rooted in the values of humanism: freedom, equality, solidarity and respect for human dignity. Our mission is to achieve changes in European and international public policies when our values are at stake and to enable humanist organisations to do the same. We provide information, support and advocacy channels to our member organizations. We provide support to European Humanist professionals who promote our values through engagement in education, and non-confessional services, such as humanist ceremonies (weddings, funerals) or moral support. Our work is structured on four strands: European Union As an official partner of the EU under Article 17 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. It was only in our time, due to scientific progress, free scientific research, human development, universal healthcare systems, modern civilisation, that we thought we could finally be forever free from such scourges. According to most scientists, the present pandemic has been the result of a well-known phenomenon: the spillover infection, occurring when a pathogen is transmitted from a species to another. Most scientists also believe that this probably happened in a Chinese market, where a huge number of wild animals are kept and slaughtered on the spot, in cruel and appalling hygienic conditions, as we all had the opportunity to witness in recent years, long before the pandemic, in a number of Tv documentaries. China made a lot of economical and technological progress in recent years, but little progress was made in the field of food safety or in that of building a more open and free society. As it had happened many a time in our own societies in the past millennia, and until just a century ago, the lack of modern hygienic conditions was probably the main cause for the spillover, and the authoritarian character of the Chinese political system was the main cause for the deadly delay in the internal and international response. Yet, the current debate following the pandemic in our countries does not ascribe the pandemic to this failure, or to a historical delay of China in meeting modernity in the field of food safety and democracy. On the contrary, it is modernity itself that is being blamed for the pandemic. It appears useless to remind that the so called “Spanish” flu a century ago caused the death of possibly 50 million people out of a world population of about just two billion, and the infection of a quarter of the world population of the time. Or that even then it probably took just three months to cross the oceans. “Mother Nature is revolting against Modernity” is the current leitmotiv: as if infectious diseases were a typical character of modernity, rather than being an exceptional event precisely and only in modernity. I certainly don’t want to underestimate the importance of the damages we humans are causing with the irrational exploitation of natural resources and far from me the intention to make a plea against environmental awareness. (continued on next page) 5 Annual Report 2019 - 2020 The point is that a mistrust of all the aspects of modernity, including scientific knowledge on the one hand, open societies and liberal democracy on the other, are becoming “common sense” among many of our fellow citizens. Fake science is rampant, and powerful political charlatans are often among their most active propagators. And the recipe to defend ourselves is closing the frontiers to any infected “stranger”. It is quite obvious that confinement was unfortunately necessary, a necessary evil to circumscribe the infection, but the sinister aspect of this debate is to be found in the frequently jubilant remark that “Nothing will ever be like before”. Our open societies should become closed communities, where solidarity is to be granted only to the members of our own tribe. Asylum seekers and migrants are kindly requested to die, possibly in silence, as we now have more important issues to deal with. Don’t visit “foreign” countries this summer, and even the other Europeans should not mind to come, visit and mix with us for the time being. The enemy is cosmopolitanism. Stringent social control is welcome by many of our fellow citizens, relinquishing any right to privacy as an outdated need appears quite fashionable. Total control of the rulers over the ruled is welcome if that is the price to pay for safety. No trade-off between freedom and security: the latter should prevail always, Hobbes enjoys his apparent final revenge over Locke. This pandemic has just been the powerful accelerator of trends that the populist and authoritarian wave, its leaders and followers, were already fuelling. Their fight against the historical project of the Enlightenment needs to meet our response. Our mission is to defend and further develop freedom, human dignity, human rights, the rule of law, our democracies. That is what generations of humanist and progressive predecessors of ours were instrumental in creating, against the ideas and the structures of the closed communities of our pre-modern past; that is what deserves to be preserved and still provides a universalistic vocation to our civilization. Giulio Ercolessi resigned from his position as President in May 2020, and was succeeded by Michael Bauer, board member of Humanist Association (D) and EHF Vice President since 2015. Guilio Ercolessi played an important and eloquent role in representing European humanism and advocating for the rights of humanist at the EU and the Council of Europe. We are members of the High Ground Alliance for Choice and Dignity in Europe, which advocates for a European legal and political landscape that secures and enables the full realization of human, sexual and reproductive health and rights and religious liberty, specifically those of women and LGBTI people. We are also funding members of Civil Society Europe, a European platform that aims at facilitating and enabling horizontal and vertical dialogue between European CSOs and policy-makers and help strengthening CSOs in their activities and relations with the institutions. We work to support lasting change for a better society, championing ideas for the one life we have. Since 1896, our work has been helping people be happier and more fulfilled. By bringing non-religious people together we help them develop their own views and an understanding of the world around them. Together with our partners Humanist Society Scotland, we speak for 100,000 members and supporters and over 100 members of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group. Through our ceremonies, pastoral support, education services, and campaigning work, we advance free thinking and freedom of choice so everyone can live in a fair and equal society. We work closely with Humanists International, founded in 1952 as the global representative body of the humanist movement, with over 170 member organisations in over 70 countries, and of which our Chief Executive is also the current President. We are also a member of the European Humanist Federation (EHF). We have good relations with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), meeting regularly with ministers and officials. We are on the steering group of the UK Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB) Forum and are an active member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on FoRB. We are accredited at the UN Human Rights Council – the only national humanist group to hold such accreditation – and make interventions there every session. We contribute annually to Humanists International’s Freedom of Thought Report1; and co-founded the End Blasphemy Laws campaign,2 which has successfully prompted ten countries to repeal their blasphemy laws since it was founded in 2015.

    Shipton et al.: Humanism and Christianity: Shared Values? WARREN SHIPTON, YOUSSRY GUIRGUIS, AND NOLA TUDU Humanism and Christianity: Shared Values? Introduction The word humanism is derived from the Latin humanitas that originally meant the study of human nature. The idea was to elevate humanity with a focus on human dignity and potential through education (Ritchie and Spencer 2014:15, 16). The meaning attributed to the word humanism, in its broadest sense, allowed Christians and non-believers initially to oc- cupy common territory (64-78). In the early-middle Christian era, some thinkers sought to acquaint themselves with the achievements, literature, and thought of past civilizations, particularly Greek, with a view to rec- onciling theology with the philosophy of the classical philosophers (New World Encyclopedia n.d.; Odom 1977:126-128, 183-186). Outside Christian circles, elements supportive of the pre-eminence of human thought and abilities have long been seen among philosophers; however, not all forms of humanism were atheistic, as seen in Confucian thought (Gupta 2000:8- 12). There also are those who have been called “religious” or “spiritual” humanists (Eller 2010:10). The Medieval civilization that followed the collapse of the Roman Em- pire (AD 476) was marked by the rule of kings with nobles supporting the king in return for privileges. The majority of the population existed in serfdom; the Church reigned supreme. A change came in the 14th century helped by the fact that famine and disease created disaster. The abuses in the Church and the pessimism prevalent in society created a climate for change in Europe.

    Ethical Record The Proceedings of the South Place Ethical Society Vol. 113 No. 9 £1.50 October 2008 THE ANNUAL REUNION OF KINDRED SOCIETIES Jennifer R Jeynes When I became Programme Co-ordinator for the Ethical Society, some years ago now, I found that our Autumn Lecture programme was preceded, after the summer break, by an Annual Reunion of the Kindred Humanist Organisations. I thought this was a very good idea in principle, to stand (or sit) together, united by the conviction that it is possible to live a good, ethical (and musical) life without imaginary supernatural support. I became persuaded that Humanists/Secularists should be united by the overriding importance of our Weltanschaung (or life stance to use the inelegant English equivalent). On 21 September I felt vindicated (if that is not too hyperbolic an expression) as over 70 people heard News and Greetings from our usual friends, the British Humanist Association, the National Secular Society and the Rationalist Association (formerly the Rationalist Press Association) but also the Sonnenberg Association of Great Britain, the Freethought History Research Group (of which the late Virginia Clark and I were founding members) and most recently, the CEMB (Council of Ex Muslims) whose members are not only principled but courageous.     Memorial Tribute 3 | 9 COMMEMORATION Reflections on the Meaning of a Tragedy Ephraim Nissan The Editorial of the 2015 volume of International Studies in Humour is followed by a section of memorial tributes, made a tragic necessity by the events of 7 January in Paris, which made the new year an annus horribilis for the organised production of humour. Thanks to Nelly Feuerhahn, editor of Humoresques, the present journal is able to publish two memorial tributes from France, by Yves Frémion, an expert whom she introduced as “a friend of mine, a great specialist of Charlie Hebdo and other press”, and he in turn wrote to “suggest a brief history of this magazine and a portrait of the five cartoonists killed”. This indeed is the topic of his two texts published here, in that order. He is in the process of completing a history of France’s political cartoons, and — to quote from an email, but see his formal biosketch in his first contribution — is the president of the Institut de Zygomatique appliquée (research about humour), former columnist about humour history in ‘Fluide glacial’ (best comics magazine in France) and editor-in-chief of ‘Papiers Nickelés’ (review about comics, cartoon, illustration, stamps, popular images and engraving).
