The Expeditions to Tocharistan*
HANNES A. FELLNER The Expeditions to Tocharistan* I have been in love many times, but Asia remained my bride. She has held me captive in her cold embrace, and out of jealousy would never let me love any other. And I have been faithful to her, that is certain. Sven Hedin Introduction Tocharian studies within Indo-European linguistics seem compared to the studies of other branches of the Indo-European family to suffer from a little underdevelopment. One of the * I would like to express my gratitude to my teacher, Melanie Malzahn, for her patience, generosity and encouragement as well as for her very helpful comments on earlier drafts of this paper. Tocharian just like the Anatolian branch of Indo-European was dis- covered only at the beginning of the 20th century. Consequently, the study on both branches lacks a research tradition reaching back hun- dreds of years like it was the case with Sanskrit, Ancient Greek or Latin. But it is to emphasize that in this respect Anatolian was some- what more fortunate than Tocharian. Assyriology provided methods and experiences in the investigation of a cuneiform language like Hit- tite. The Hittites were also known from a lot of very important and diverse sources like the Old Testament and Ancient Egyptian records, so there was a more general interest for research in this language from very different fields right from the beginning. After the decipherment and proof that Hittite is an Indo-European language, KuryLowicz showed that it was possible to trace some of the Hittite (_) signs back to Saussure’s “coefficients sonantiques” and as a consequence at least some of the Indo-European scholars at that time recognized the im- portance of this branch immediately. -
M. Witzel (2003) Sintashta, BMAC and the Indo-Iranians. a Query. [Excerpt
M. Witzel (2003) Sintashta, BMAC and the Indo-Iranians. A query. [excerpt from: Linguistic Evidence for Cultural Exchange in Prehistoric Western Central Asia] (to appear in : Sino-Platonic Papers 129) Transhumance, Trickling in, Immigration of Steppe Peoples There is no need to underline that the establishment of a BMAC substrate belt has grave implications for the theory of the immigration of speakers of Indo-Iranian languages into Greater Iran and then into the Panjab. By and large, the body of words taken over into the Indo-Iranian languages in the BMAC area, necessarily by bilingualism, closes the linguistic gap between the Urals and the languages of Greater Iran and India. Uralic and Yeneseian were situated, as many IIr. loan words indicate, to the north of the steppe/taiga boundary of the (Proto-)IIr. speaking territories (§2.1.1). The individual IIr. languages are firmly attested in Greater Iran (Avestan, O.Persian, Median) as well as in the northwestern Indian subcontinent (Rgvedic, Middle Vedic). These materials, mentioned above (§2.1.) and some more materials relating to religion (Witzel forthc. b) indicate an early habitat of Proto- IIr. in the steppes south of the Russian/Siberian taiga belt. The most obvious linguistic proofs of this location are the FU words corresponding to IIr. Arya "self-designation of the IIr. tribes": Pre-Saami *orja > oarji "southwest" (Koivulehto 2001: 248), ārjel "Southerner", and Finnish orja, Votyak var, Syry. ver "slave" (Rédei 1986: 54). In other words, the IIr. speaking area may have included the S. Ural "country of towns" (Petrovka, Sintashta, Arkhaim) dated at c. -
New Data on the Ancient Settlement of Ak-Beshim (Chu River Valley, Northern Kyrgyzstan)
New data on the ancient settlement of Ak-Beshim (Chu River Valley, Northern Kyrgyzstan) Bakyt Amanbaeva Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyz Republic Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic KG Abstract According to the archaeological data, a series of ancient settlement appeared on the territory of the Chu River Valley (Dzhety-Suu, Semirechie) in VI-VIII centuries. Some of them were composed of the citadel and shakhristan and transformed later (IX-XI centuries) into the territories surrounded with one-two rings of so-called “long walls” with considerable size in the perimeter. Of these cities was Suyab, which ruins correspond to the ancient settlement of Ak-Bashim known as a capital of three Turkic Khaganates in VI-X centuries: Western Turkic, Türgesh and Karluk. Scientific studies were implemented by Kyrgyz (National Academy of Sciences) and Janapese (National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo and Teikyo University since 2016) archaeologists. Excavation site No 15 put in place on the territory of shakhristan No 2 revealed the concentration of grey-clay tile, which corresponds to the remains of the collapsed wall of the building. Probably, the revealed construction may the component of the garden-park ensemble of the Tang Dynasty Period. Analysis of the aerial photo of 1967 and further geophysical studies of the territory of the “second” Buddhist temple have shown that it was a part of the larger complex with the walls of 140-150 m in length. As the result of the excavation site No 18 the revealed temple was occupying only its south-western corner, while another construction the role of which has to be identified during the further archaeological studies, was situated nearby. -
Manali Project Prospectus
Manali Project Prospectus Brief Overview and Areas for Further Research (April, 2017) Contents A. Description of Manali Project B. Overview of Story (as currently envisioned) C. Effort to Highlight Ways of Creating Unprecedented Culture Change, Cultivating Spiritual Wisdom D. Areas for Further Research A. Description of Project The Manali Project is a fictionalized account of three story lines taking place in a time period of from maybe 2080-2150. Hopefully, the story lines would highlight—through both dramatic and everyday circumstances-- 1) the positive possibilities associated with permaculture, appropriate technology 2) the humor associated with salvaging material culture from the previous “advanced” civilization --and share much about ways to create unprecedented culture change, and arrive at communities which integrate spiritual wisdom into the everyday circumstances of daily life. Note: (the name Manali is taken from the name of a town in India)…“Manali is named after the Sanatan Hindu lawgiver Manu. The name Manali is regarded as the derivative of 'Manu-Alaya' which literally means 'the abode of Manu'. Legend has it that sage Manu stepped off his ark in Manali to recreate human life after a great flood had deluged the world.” (Wikipedia) Questions which this fictional account seeks to explore include “what is wisdom?”, and “how does cultural transmission of wisdom take place?”. There will also be an effort to be realistic about what kind of material culture each of the three story lines have. Included below are some sources which I have identified as starting points for giving the three story lines authentic material cultures. However, this kind of writing involves more research than what I’ve done before, and so I’m looking for ideas about how to develop the material culture piece of it. -

Shifting Memories: Burial Practices and Cultural Interaction in Bronze Age China
Department of Archaeology and Ancient History Shifting Memories: Burial Practices and Cultural Interaction in Bronze Age China A study of the Xiaohe-Gumugou cemeteries in the Tarim Basin Yunyun Yang Candidate thesis 45 hp in Archaeology Spring term 2019 Supervisor: Anders Kaliff Department of Archaeology and Ancient History Uppsala University Abstract Yang, Y. 2019. Shifting Memories: Burial Practices and Cultural Interaction in Bronze Age China. A study of the Xiaohe-Gumugou cemeteries in the Tarim Basin. This study focuses on the burial practices in the Bronze Age Xiaohe-Gumugou cemeteries, north-west China, in order to understand how people constructed their social identities and delivered the social cognitions through generations. The Xiaohe-Gumugou cemeteries, as the main sites of the Xiaohe cultural horizon, have central roles for the understanding of the formation of the Bronze Age cultural groups and the cultural interactions between the west and the east in the Tarim Basin. However, current research is lacking in-depth examinations of the material culture of the cemeteries, and the contexts of the surrounding archaeological cultures in a timespan from Bronze Age to Iron Age. Through detailed comparisons of the construction of coffins and monuments, the dress of the dead, and the burial goods assemblages, this study provides an overview of the social structural development, from the Gumugou group’s heterogenous condition to the Xiaohe group’s homogeneous and mature state. Also, through relating to the results of biological and osteological analyses, and applying geographical analyses to the material, this study suggests that the early settlers in the Tarim Basin, the Xiaohe-Gumugou people have created their own social identities. -

The Reconstruction of the Name Yuezhi 月氏 / 月支
International Journal of Old Uyghur Studies, 1/2, 2019: 249-282 The Reconstruction of The Name Yuezhi 月氏 / 月支 Hakan Aydemir* (İstanbul - Türkiye) Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Dieter Michael Job Özet: Yuezhi Adının Yeniden Yapılandırılması Orta Asya tarihinin kuşkusuz en önemli problemlerinden biri Çin kaynaklarında Yuèzhī (月氏 / 月支) olarak geçen halkın kökenidir. Anahtar Sözcükler: Yuezhi, Toharlar, Tohar sorunu, Türkçe-Toharca ilişkileri Abstract One of the most important problems of Central Asian history is undoubtedly the origin of the people referred to as Yuèzhī (月氏 / 月支) in Chinese sources. The study attempts to present and critically evaluate various theories concerning the origin of the Yuezhi and their relationship to the Tocharians. To address this problem, it investigates Uyghur and Chinese place names and tries to list Yuezhi ethnotoponyms in Afghanistan and Xinjiang. -

By Svetoslav Stamov, MS, Duke University, Association Science Bulgaria Abstract We report the presence of significant Central Asian ancestry in both contemporary Bulgarians and in early medieval population from SMC (Saltovo Mayaky Culture) . The existence of Chalcolithic-Iran (Hajj-Fruz) and Wusun related ancestral component in contemporary Bulgarians comes as a surprise and sheds light on both migration route and ethnic origins of Proto-Bulgarians. We interpret these results as an evidence for a Central –Asian connection for the tribes, constituting the population of SMC and Kubrat’s Old Great Bulgaria in Pontic steppe from 6th-7th century AD. We identify Central Asian Wusun tribes as carriers of this component on the base from the results from f3 and f4 statistics. We suggest that Wusun-related tribes must have played role (or might have even been the backbone) in what became known as the Hunnic migration to Europe during 3rd-5th century AD. Same population must have taken part in the formation of the SMC (Saltovo- bioRxiv preprint doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.06.02.446576; this version posted June 2, 2021.
