SPARKS ACROSS THE GAP: ESSAYS By Megan E. Mericle, B.A. A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing University of Alaska Fairbanks May 2017 APPROVED: Daryl Farmer, Committee Chair Sarah Stanley, Committee Co-Chair Gerri Brightwell, Committee Member Eileen Harney, Committee Member Richard Carr, Chair Department of English Todd Sherman, Dean College o f Liberal Arts Michael Castellini, Dean of the Graduate School Abstract Sparks Across the Gap is a collection of creative nonfiction essays that explores the humanity and artistry behind topics in the sciences, including black holes, microbes, and robotics. Each essay acts a bridge between the scientific and the personal. I examine my own scientific inheritance and the unconventional relationship I have with the field of science, searching for ways to incorporate research into my everyday life by looking at science and technology through the lens of my own memory. I critique issues that affect the culture of science, including female representation, the ongoing conflict with religion and the problem of separating individuality from collaboration. Sparks Across the Gap is my attempt to parse the confusion, hybridity and interconnectivity of living in science. iii iv Dedication This manuscript is dedicated to my mother and father, who taught me to always seek knowledge with compassion. v vi Table of Contents Page Title Page......................................................................................................................................................i -

Rostec to Start Developing 3 Generation Combat Gear in 2020 June 26, 2019 Press Release JSC Tsniitochmash (Part of Rostec) Plans
Rostec to start developing 3rd generation combat gear in 2020 June 26, 2019 Press release JSC TsNIITochMash (part of Rostec) plans to start R&D work of new third generation combat gear for the military in 2020. This new equipment, replacing the Ratnik combat gear, will be called Sotnik. The new gear will include anti-mine boots, an anti-thermal suit hiding the soldier from infrared sensors and anti-radar camouflage suit. Other plans include introducing a tactical system using micro UAVs, where the camera stream from the UAV will be projected to the helmet’s visor or separate goggles. The electric goggles can also be used to display tactical orders, maps of the area, etc. “According to our plans, the third generation gear Sotnik will replace Ratnik already in 2025. This will be fundamentally new kind of equipment integrating the best high-tech designs of Russian enterprises, including those of Rostec. Thanks to the use of innovative materials and combining the functions of individual elements, the weight of the set will be reduced by 20%, amounting to about 20 kilograms”, said Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov. Sotnik will use a “chameleon” material that can be controlled with voltage — a joint design by TsNIITochMash and the Roselectronics holding company. This electrochromic material can change its color depending on the masked surface and its environment. A helmet with this kind of unique coating was demonstrated for the first time at the ARMY-2018 forum. Rostec has been supplying the Russian army with a 2nd generation Ratnik combat gear since 2014. This gear consists of five integrated systems: life-support, control and communications, combat, protection and energy supply. -

Russia: Background and U.S
Russia: Background and U.S. Policy Updated August 21, 2017 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R44775 Russia: Background and U.S. Policy Summary Over the last five years, Congress and the executive branch have closely monitored and responded to new developments in Russian policy. These developments include the following: increasingly authoritarian governance since Vladimir Putin’s return to the presidential post in 2012; Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region and support of separatists in eastern Ukraine; violations of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty; Moscow’s intervention in Syria in support of Bashar al Asad’s government; increased military activity in Europe; and cyber-related influence operations that, according to the U.S. intelligence community, have targeted the 2016 U.S. presidential election and countries in Europe. In response, the United States has imposed economic and diplomatic sanctions related to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and Syria, malicious cyber activity, and human rights violations. The United States also has led NATO in developing a new military posture in Central and Eastern Europe designed to reassure allies and deter aggression. U.S. policymakers over the years have identified areas in which U.S. and Russian interests are or could be compatible. The United States and Russia have cooperated successfully on issues such as nuclear arms control and nonproliferation, support for military operations in Afghanistan, the Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs, the International Space Station, and the removal of chemical weapons from Syria. In addition, the United States and Russia have identified other areas of cooperation, such as countering terrorism, illicit narcotics, and piracy. -
Organized Crime – Definition, Players and Global Threat
Transnational Crime MSCR 640 Regis University Week 2 Post-Soviet “Russian” Organized Crime – Definition, Players and Global Threat John Giduck © By John Giduck, all rights reserved, 1995, 2017 1 The Need of Define ROC. One of the greatest difficulties facing those individuals and organizations which must deal with the impact of Russian Organized Crime (ROC) is answering the question, exactly what is Russian organized crime? This difficulty derives in part from the extreme secrecy with which ROC members have always functioned; and has been exacerbated by both news media and law enforcement agencies, whose own particular ends are better served by sensationalized and exaggerated accounts of ROC membership, rising numbers of groups, types and frequency of various crimes. What remains missing is a clear understanding of what exactly Russian organized crime and ROC groups are. Certainly, the media of the 1990s, in reporting incidents of street crime and overall rising crime rates in Russia, utilized a liberal construction of this term, it then being in vogue to blame much on the mafiya. In reality, it will be seen that there are actually many layers of crime in Russia, a number of which are not, and have never been, mafiya controlled.1 Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in late 1991, news media accounts of an increasing crime rate paralleled rising estimates of the number of actual ROC groups and numbers. Rarely a month went by in the three years after the USSR’s collapse that some newspaper, magazine or television show did not proffer a statistic on the number of ROC groups operating across Russia that was not substantially greater than those previously reported. -
Robot Competition, Design of Labyrinth and Robotdemo Työn Ohjaaja: Juha Räty Työn Valmistumislukukausi Ja -Vuosi: Kevät 2013 Sivumäärä: 85 + 8 Liitettä
Alfonso Antonio Reyes Jaramillo ROBOT COMPETITION, DESIGN OF LABYRINTH AND ROBOTDEMO ROBOT COMPETITION, DESIGN OF LABYRINTH AND ROBOTDEMO Alfonso Antonio Reyes Jaramillo Bachelor’s Thesis Spring 2013 Tietotekniikan koulutusohjelma Oulun seudun ammattikorkeakoulu TIIVISTELMÄ Oulun seudun ammattikorkeakoulu Tietotekniikan koulutusohjelma, Tekijä: Alfonso Antonio Reyes Jaramillo Opinnäytetyön nimi: Robot Competition, Design of Labyrinth and RobotDemo Työn ohjaaja: Juha Räty Työn valmistumislukukausi ja -vuosi: Kevät 2013 Sivumäärä: 85 + 8 liitettä Tämä opinnäytetyö sai alkunsa tuntiopettaja Juha Rädyn ehdotuksesta.
