East Knoyle newsletter Vol: 46 Issue No 3 www.east-knoyle.co.uk May/June 2020 Editors: Tracie, Deb and Emma [email protected] 1 A note from the Editors... We are all living through an unprecedented situation—Covid-19; and as a community, East Knoyle and it’s surrounding hamlets have pulled together to support each other, to bring happiness, to protect our most vulnerable residents and to contribute to the wider national effort. We thought this edition would be slim, what with the weekly updates and everyone in lockdown; we were wrong! Our amazing village has much to share and to raise a smile. Illustration: Nurses. My humble tribute to the wonderful girls and boys who risk their lives everyday to keep us safe. Peter Mcshane In this issue... East Knoyle Community Shop Over the last few weeks I have had an occasional stint as the “official greeter” at our shop, helping ensure only 2 people are in the shop at any one time. It has been fun talking to and meeting people in the queue. During this Covid-19 period I have become aware of the huge amount of work done by the Village Shop Committee to adapt our procedures to meet the crisis. New rotas have been introduced necessitating more volunteers, home deliveries have been introduced, not only for food and groceries, but also for the medicines from the surgery. One of the positive consequences of the crisis is that shop usage has in- creased. This is a most welcome development but means there is more ordering and accounting to do by the small team of really dedicated vol- unteers responsible for these duties. In summary the whole village owes the Shop Committee a huge debt of thanks for keeping the show on the road and maintaining the fabric of community spirit and wellbeing during this challenging period. Please could all villagers continue to use the shop when life returns to normal— the shop needs, and deserves, your support more than the likes of Waitrose or Tesco. Thank you. Parish Council News Tim Hyde, Chairman, East Knoyle Parish Council. Clerk to the Council, Kevin Stowe [email protected] The Business of the PC has been badly affected by the current lockdown. On 18th March the PC held a socially distanced, Extraordinary General Meeting to formally suspend business and cancel the Parish Assembly and AGM meetings which were due to be held in April and May respectively. Some of the PC business is still going on, for instance planning applications are now viewed and discussed online by Councillors before the views of the PC are expressed to WCC planning department via the Clerk. The PC will be writing to Burfitt and Garrett and Wessex Water to thank them for the work they have undertaken in the village over the last few months. Wessex Water are close to completing their mains replacement project and were kind enough to donate £1000 toward the cost of Knoyle House Grounds wall repairs via their "Wessex Watermark" scheme which supports local community initiatives. The KHG Wall repairs look fantastic and we are grateful to Steve Garrett and his workforce for the considerable effort that has gone into making this wall safe again. The Japanese Knotweed eradication team, which tackled the outbreak in the woods on Wise Lane in the Winter would be grateful to anyone who would like to chop back any new growth they see while out walking. Finally, the Chairman and members of the PC would like to thank everyone for observing the Government guidelines on social distancing so vigilantly. In addition to this the shop management team and volunteers deserve our gratitude for keeping the shop open and safe for all to use. There are too many people to thank individually but you all know who you are. 3 Wrens Shop Notes by Ian Tait Never more so than during the lockdown has the shop been run by the village for the village. With everyone having to stay at home and a number of people working from home we have been able to both provide a morning shop service and a twice daily de- livery service and comply with the rules. Alan Quantrell erected a protective screen around the Wrens till to protect the server and 2 metre markers have been installed on the floor. Two people at a time are allowed entry to the shop and one other is permit- ted to access the Post Office at the same time. Janeen is now opening the Post Office Monday – Friday 9am – 1pm and is able to do Royal Mail & Parcelforce, cash withdrawals and deposits as well as bill payments and much more. The shop is open Monday to Saturday 8am–2pm and 5-6pm and 9am-12pm on Sundays. In the afternoons the volunteers are restocking the shelves and preparing the orders. Deliveries go out at 12:30pm and 5:30pm and my thanks go to all the volunteer deliverers who cover the whole village, including taking out prescriptions on a Monday and Thursday. A list of where to go with the prescription is produced but help is normally required to identify exactly where the recipients live. As you can see above, Janeen is very good at this. On VE Day, the shop supported Lesley Hardinge to deliver the cream teas to our village veterans and the photographs show the team social distancing whilst collecting the teas with balloons for delivery. My thanks go to everyone who has been helping in the shop in whatever way. If you are inter- ested in helping please call Ian Tait on 830647. PS – We haven’t set a date for the Community Shop Association AGM because of the lockdown. The Management Committee are reviewing the options and will let all shareholders know the plan in due course. 4 East Knoyle Rainfall Robin Egerton March 59mm (2.32") April 58mm (2.28") In March, I recorded rain on 13 different days, and there was one 14 day spell from the middle to near the end of the month with no rain recorded. The March average rainfall for the last 26 years is 85.23mm (3.36”). Thus this March is just over 1” below the average, but there were still 13 drier March's in the last 26 years. In April, I recorded rain on only 6 different days. There were three longer spells without rain recorded in the month, one of 5 days at the start, one of 10 and one of 9. The April average rainfall is 67.30mm (2.65”), so this Aprils’ rainfall is under half an inch below the average. But there were still 15 drier Aprils' in the last 26 years. Looking back at the lovely dry, warm weather of the last two months, it is strange to find that we had so much rain The winner of the Wren Shop Easter raffle Paul Egginton We all have a responsibility to stop coronavirus from spreading. The NHS has released the following advice: Do • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds • always wash your hands when you get home or into work • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell Don't • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean East Knoyle Village Hall EAST KNOYLE VILLAGE HALL 200 CLUB In the days of social isolation, it has been the most unusual draw ever for the Village Hall 200 Club. For Village Hall Bookings & Availability Please contact Nicki Sturrock: [email protected] or telephone 01747 830143 5 St Mary’s Church Rev Richard Warhurst’s last service was conducted over the internet on Easter Sunday, and we are now officially in an Interregnum, or vacancy. However, we are very lucky to have back with us, living in Donhead Rectory, our assistant curate Rev Kevin Martin, who has been able to return after a period of wider experience with the Nadder Valley Team. Kevin, ably assisted by Rev June Lane and some technical wizards, does several Zoom services every Sunday, and on weekdays too. Originally, the plan had been to continue with flowers in St Mary’s, even though it was to be shut for services.
