Greetings from Graham

Dear Friends,

As this will be my final letter in About Upper Stour, I’d like to use 3 words that I often encourage baptism families to use with their children in prayer:

Thank you Thank you for all the kind words and notes we have received since announcing my retirement. It has been overwhelming. Thank you to all those who have made our time here so fulfilling: colleagues, church officers, worshippers, friends in the schools, pubs and village hall events – I could go on! Most of all, thank you to God, for allowing me to see some of his work in the lives of the people of this parish. This has been a wonderful place to live and serve, and it has been a real privilege to live here among you.

Sorry Sorry to those people whose expectations I have not met: those I have not visited as much as I would have liked; those who feel there has been too much change, those who feel there has been too little….. If I have disappointed/upset/offended you in any way, please accept this as my apology, and my hope that you might be able to forgive.

Please Please support in prayer and encouragement those who will lead the parish through the vacancy, especially the churchwardens who bear the main responsibility. Please pray for the ministers (lay and ordained) who will take services and provide pastoral care during the vacancy Please pray for those seeking the right person to serve as your next Priest- in-Charge, that they may have wisdom and joy in that role. Please pray for the right person to be appointed, welcome him/her with the same enthusiasm with which you welcomed us.

And finally, finally … A retired vicar was fishing one day, when he heard a noise beside him. He looked down and saw a frog sitting next to him. The frog said, "I've had a spell cast on me. If you'll kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess and I'll make you happy for the rest of your life." The old vicar smiled, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.

A little later, he looked into his pocket to see how the frog was doing. The frog said to him again, this time with exasperation, "I've had a spell cast on me. If you'll kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess and I'll make you happy for the rest of your life." The old vicar just smiled and kept on fishing. / continued page 4 … 3

A little later he checked on the frog again. This time it said, "What's wrong with you? I said I've been bewitched. Just kiss me and I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and make you the happiest man on earth for the rest of your life."

The old vicar just smiled and said, "Frog, I hate to tell you this, but at my age, I'd rather have a talking frog than a beautiful princess!"

Your friend in Christ,

Graham Revd Graham Perryman

Zeals Walkers The Zeals Walkers very much enjoyed a first-time circular walk from to in ideal walking weather. Following the footpath to Brixton Deverill on Little Down hill we enjoyed splendid views of the Deverill valley, and saw the results of some impressive hedge-laying and tree naming that is taking place on the Organic Farms Estate. Arriving at and then walking around Brixton Deverill village we were very impressed with the splendid setting, the meandering flowing through it and the very attractive and well maintained properties.

We learned that the Deverill Valley has been continuously farmed since at least 3500BC and that Brixton Deverill has the earliest evidence of settlement. We also learned about the accidental discovery in 2015 of a Roman Mosaic in the grounds of a property that we passed in the village that upon excavation turned out to be part of the floor of a much larger Roman property originally built around 200AD. Many artefacts found there are now in local museums but unfortunately the excavations could not be continued by Historic as the huge cost of excavating such a large property were such that the remains - some of the most important to be found in decades - had to be filled in.

We set off to return to Longbridge Deverill on a lengthy hedged bridleway on Brims Down hill to conclude with a very enjoyable lunch at The George Inn. The next walk will take place on Sunday 5th May to be led by Mary [email protected] and Ros [email protected]. David Hines

Green Fingers : May Notes from the not so green fingered LILY OF THE VALLEY The flower for the month of May is the Lily of the Valley. This plant, loved by us all, is a sweetly scented, highly poisonous woodland flowering plant that is a native throughout the cool temperate Northern hemisphere in Asia and Europe. Other names for the plant include May bells, Our Lady's Tears and Mary's Tears.

This moisture loving plant forms a spreading mass with red seed pods remaining after flowering.

Lily of the Valley is an easy plant that prefers growing in partial shade and moist soil and there are a few cultivars to choose from. I particularly like Convalleria Majalis Rosea --- which is a pretty pink variety.

Apparently Kate Middleton carried Lily of the Valley in her wedding bouquet. I cannot recommend particular gardens to see Lily of the Valley but I do think that we should all get out and enjoy the fabulous blue bell woods that are so special at the moment. Pippa Schofield

News from Stourhead

May sees Stourhead celebrating Floralia, which in ancient Rome, was a festival in honour of Flora, goddess of flowers and spring. As the rhododendrons and azaleas come into full and magnificent bloom around the lake paths, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate spring at Stourhead. As you wander the paths, rhododendron and azalea blossoms seem to ruffle and frill wherever the eye might land, jubilant in tones of buttery yellows, purples and every imaginable shade of pink.

Stourhead will be decorated with stunning arrangements throughout Floralia, and for those who would love to learn more about the stars of the garden in spring, the gardeners will be leading free tours at 2pm every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon throughout May and June.

At the end of April, we launched Nearness, which is an augmented reality experience by video artist Sam Smith. The work has been inspired by Stourhead and the unique, distinctive and cherished aspects of the property. The work will be on display in the Library in the house as well as the Pantheon, with a mapped walk linking the two pieces, until 30 September and we really hope that you come and experience it during the year.

Every May we host an Immortal sporting weekend, this year on the 11/12 May and hundreds of athletes will be competing to be crowned the winner in one of four events taking place over the weekend, a 10k race, a sprint triathlon and family fun run and the half iron man. The triathlon weekend is a busy one with some road closures taking place throughout the village for the safety of participants. The events are quite the spectacle to behold, particularly the swim starts in the lake which take place for both triathlons, so if you haven’t experienced the event in previous years, do come along this year.

If you are keen to find out more about Stourhead or get involved in the work that we do, we have lots of volunteering opportunities across the property. Please do contact me. We look forward to seeing you at Stourhead again soon.

Wylye Valley Art Trail 2019 The Wylye Valley Art Trail is largest visual arts event in Wiltshire. In 2019 we are celebrating the 10th trail with 85 venues scattered across some of the most beautiful countryside this county has to offer. A wide and eclectic patchwork of art and craft from over 300 participants, ranging from award-winning artists with international reputations to others only just starting out on their creative paths. There’s something for every taste and every budget.

Visit open studios and workplaces, galleries, exhibitions by art groups, student groups and other exciting events including 'hands on' activities, demonstrations, workshops and talks. A unique opportunity to see a high standard of visual arts and crafts across a wide range of skills, from painting to print- making, furniture making to photography and sculpture to ceramics. It offers the chance to meet the artists and, in many cases, see where and how they work.

There are links to area maps for each venue on the website (www.wvat.co.uk); these aim to give you information about the general area/village and do not pin point the exact location of each venue. There is an option to input the venue postcode and get directions to it from wherever you are on the link.

If you would like to follow the trail by bike, much of it coincides with the Wiltshire Cycleway. Admission to all the events is free. Opening times are from 10.30am to 5.30pm unless otherwise stated. Dates in pale grey indicate that the venue is closed that day.

This year Venue 1 is in Zeals, once you’ve seen the local ones you can carry on with the trail as far as you want to go.

News from Parish Councils

Bourton The PC meeting in March was again well attended and the debate for the new Village Hall continues. There have been many comments made, plus complaints against the PC and a petition from a number of residents against the Jubilee Site. But as yet there has been no firm indication from the Planning department on either of the proposed sites. The new Dorset Council came into effect on 1st April. Councillor numbers will be reduced from approximately 230 down to 82 once elections have taken place on 2nd May. Prime concern of the new council will be ensuring continuity of services, with South Warks House being the new headquarters. In the interim there may be a slight hiatus and/or delay for decisions on planning issues from the Dorset Council Planning Department due to reorganisation. The PC have purchased a recycled bench to replace the bench opposite the War Memorial and this will be installed within the next few weeks. The defibrillator training that took place on 25th March in St George's school hall was attended by just 4 people. For more details of what is discussed at the PC meetings please see the minutes posted in the noticeboards or go to http://www.bourtondorset.org/agenda- minutes-2019/ The next meeting will take place in the Village Hall on 29th April at 7pm and then the AGM will take place on 20th May at 7pm. Eve Wynn, Bourton Parish Clerk: 07702 709557

Kilmington The Parish Council met on 7th March; full details of decisions and actions taken will be in the Minutes soon to be available on the website www.kilmingtonwiltshire.org and on the village noticeboard. With regard to parking outside the playing field for the residents of Brookside, it was agreed to form a sub-committee and one of their first tasks will be to establish how much this proposed initiative will cost to implement. The Community Area Transport group has agreed to have additional farm vehicle signage placed on the B3092 at Norton Ferris to warn traffic approaching the Coombe Barn Lane junction, on the condition that the PC contributes 25% of the £750 cost; this was agreed. Extra funding has become available to WC for highways and Councillors are putting together a priority list of items. If any resident is concerned about pot holes, lack of road white lines, damaged or missing road signs, please contact any member of the PC or the Clerk and report these so that as much as possible is covered. There are now only a few “low” or “very low” risk items highlighted by the RoSPA inspector in his 2018 report on the children’s play area still outstanding – and these mainly involve repair to the wetpour surface. The one “medium” risk item /…. continued on page 17 16 in the report concerned the cableway and in January the installer of this equipment totally replaced the seat and chain, as the design of the cableway makes it impossible to inspect for wear and tear The next meeting will be the Annual Parish Meeting, followed by the Annual Parish Council meeting on Thursday, 16 May at 7.30 pm at Whitesheet School. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Stourton with Gasper The litter pick – part of the Great British Spring Clean – was a huge success and many thanks to all who turned out on the Saturday morning to help. A total of 20 sacks of rubbish were collected as well as various large items including a television and plastic garden chair which had been dumped in Crab Lane! The Parish Meeting is taking place on Thursday 23 May at 6.30pm in the Memorial Hall and this will be followed by the Annual Parish Council meeting. All are welcome to attend. Ruth Burrows, Clerk

Zeals At the last meeting of the Parish Council held in March, councillors voted unanimously for the Parish Council to become solely responsible for the playground by the housing area at Westfields, in that Wiltshire Council felt that they were unable to carry on looking after it. It does mean, thankfully, that the facility will be saved for the village, but all aspects of it, including insurance, any repairs and general maintenance will be the responsibility of the Parish Council alone. There will be financial implications from it, but it is a facility that is important for the whole community here in Zeals. We are hoping that the perimeter fencing will be brought up to the necessary standard very soon. As a community we are all benefitting from the efforts of several volunteer groups that have been active recently by their actions given freely to improve the appearance of our area. Now that the flowers are in full bloom, we are seeing the results of all the planting undertaken last Autumn by the Greener Zeals Group. Credit also goes to those 14 residents who all worked hard last week collecting litter from all over the place in Zeals. All we need now is for our grass- cutting contractor to pay us a visit and we should be in good shape for Easter. The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place on Thursday 16 May commencing at 6.45 pm prompt. Altogether there will be 3 meetings: firstly, we shall have the Annual Parish Meeting, to be followed by the Annual General Meeting of the Parish Council, with the regular bi-monthly meeting to finish. Please remember that full minutes can be viewed on-line using http://www.hugofox.com/communities/zeals. Graham Edgar: Clerk to Zeals Parish Council

Country Calendar April 2019 Fuschia pink the rising orbe Her rays reflect like prisms the dew of early dawn Gently awakes the start of a new day Oh happy is the heart in the month of May JP

Lambing is now over and how lovely it was to be able to lamb outside, the first time ever for us. The weather was perfect, lots of lovely healthy lambs and very few problems. The down side of lambing outside are the foxes; they do have the opportunity of taking newly born lambs, although thankfully our losses were not too great. The lambs soon grow and are pretty agile at getting away from any pending danger.

We are getting ready for the show season, but we first have to pass our pending TB test. We are trying to be positive, but it is always there in the back of your mind. Last year I wrote about a calf left without a mother and we hand reared this little chap from three weeks old. He was born on New Year’s Day 2018 and we named him “Oh No Harry” (a little Parker joke). Oh No Harry has grown into a very handsome young bull, so much so he has made the cut for showing. He is a very gentle little bull and has started his education of learning to lead, stand and show himself to his best ability.

Well that is the aim, anything can happen from now until Show Day, but I do hope “Oh No Harry“ does well - he deserves to. Jane Parker
