It has been overwhelming. Thank you to all those who have made our time here so fulfilling: colleagues, church officers, worshippers, friends in the schools, pubs and village hall events – I could go on! Most of all, thank you to God, for allowing me to see some of his work in the lives of the people of this parish. This has been a wonderful place to live and serve, and it has been a real privilege to live here among you. Sorry Sorry to those people whose expectations I have not met: those I have not visited as much as I would have liked; those who feel there has been too much change, those who feel there has been too little….. If I have disappointed/upset/offended you in any way, please accept this as my apology, and my hope that you might be able to forgive. Please Please support in prayer and encouragement those who will lead the parish through the vacancy, especially the churchwardens who bear the main responsibility. Please pray for the ministers (lay and ordained) who will take services and provide pastoral care during the vacancy Please pray for those seeking the right person to serve as your next Priest- in-Charge, that they may have wisdom and joy in that role. Please pray for the right person to be appointed, welcome him/her with the same enthusiasm with which you welcomed us. And finally, finally … A retired vicar was fishing one day, when he heard a noise beside him. He looked down and saw a frog sitting next to him. The frog said, "I've had a spell cast on me. If you'll kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess and I'll make you happy for the rest of your life." The old vicar smiled, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. A little later, he looked into his pocket to see how the frog was doing. The frog said to him again, this time with exasperation, "I've had a spell cast on me. If you'll kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess and I'll make you happy for the rest of your life." The old vicar just smiled and kept on fishing. / continued page 4 … 3 A little later he checked on the frog again. This time it said, "What's wrong with you? I said I've been bewitched. Just kiss me and I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and make you the happiest man on earth for the rest of your life." The old vicar just smiled and said, "Frog, I hate to tell you this, but at my age, I'd rather have a talking frog than a beautiful princess!" Following the footpath to Brixton Deverill on Little Down hill we enjoyed splendid views of the Deverill valley, and saw the results of some impressive hedge-laying and tree naming that is taking place on the Pertwood Organic Farms Estate. Arriving at and then walking around Brixton Deverill village we were very impressed with the splendid setting, the meandering River Wylye flowing through it and the very attractive and well maintained properties. We learned that the Deverill Valley has been continuously farmed since at least 3500BC and that Brixton Deverill has the earliest evidence of settlement. We also learned about the accidental discovery in 2015 of a Roman Mosaic in the grounds of a property that we passed in the village that upon excavation turned out to be part of the floor of a much larger Roman property originally built around 200AD. Many artefacts found there are now in local museums but unfortunately the excavations could not be continued by Historic England as the huge cost of excavating such a large property were such that the remains - some of the most important to be found in decades - had to be filled in. We set off to return to Longbridge Deverill on a lengthy hedged bridleway on Brims Down hill to conclude with a very enjoyable lunch at The George Inn. The next walk will take place on Sunday 5th May to be led by Mary [email protected] and Ros [email protected]. This plant, loved by us all, is a sweetly scented, highly poisonous woodland flowering plant that is a native throughout the cool temperate Northern hemisphere in Asia and Europe. Other names for the plant include May bells, Our Lady's Tears and Mary's Tears. This moisture loving plant forms a spreading mass with red seed pods remaining after flowering. Lily of the Valley is an easy plant that prefers growing in partial shade and moist soil and there are a few cultivars to choose from. I particularly like Convalleria Majalis Rosea --- which is a pretty pink variety. Apparently Kate Middleton carried Lily of the Valley in her wedding bouquet. I cannot recommend particular gardens to see Lily of the Valley but I do think that we should all get out and enjoy the fabulous blue bell woods that are so special at the moment.
