The tower has been “mended" also and presents no particular point of interest. It contains only one bell, with the inscription— PERROT FENTON. CHURCHWARDEN, T. MEARS OF LONDON. FECIT 1820. Within the church we have a flat ceiling, old-fashioned pews and a western organ gallery wherein are placed the singers and the school girls, the latter of whom are not particularly attentive to the service. The walls are covered with plaster but the chancel arch seems to show traces of Early English work. The font is one of the most interesting in the neighbourhood. It is heptagonal in shape with seven angels' heads at the base of the shaft. A plaque on the northern wall of this new section has: TO THE GLORY OF GOD and to the use of the Parish of Saltford for ever this added portion of the Churchyard was made a free gift by MAJOR LAMOROCK FLOWER A.D. 1894 Previous Surveys There have been a number of surveys of the churchyard over recent decades: between 1960 and 1982 by Frank Vine, in 1988 by Gordon Reed and Eddie Cooper, in 1999 by Miriam Hare and in 2004 by Nigel Newbery. The 2004 documentation states that ‘no attempt has been made to replicate individual type styles’ and the Figure 2 The church circa 1920 sizes of font and the use of italics don’t replace the actual appearance of the inscriptions. This documentation was not generally available. In this survey an attempt has been made to show the general forms of the inscriptions using different font sizes etc. In addition reference has been made to the parish register where there are ambiguities in the names and dates. In the 1980s the headstones in the old part of the churchyard were moved and placed along the western and southern walls. A photograph in the vestry dating from about 1924 shows that arrangement of memorials at that time The burial register (entry 553) specifies that ‘various 18th & 19th century human remains excavated during the archaeological dig’ were buried on 7 Sep 1994 in front of grave 1.16. However in 1886 there were 21 burials with an average age of 31. Issue 1 3 Saltford – Memorial Inscriptions Occupants Ages are present in the burial registers from 1837. The age profile shows that 15.4% of those buried were aged under 11 and 41.2% were aged over 70. This is contrast with, for example, Widcombe – a poor urban
