There is a fantastic 18 hole Golf Course at Colvend and a 9 hole, par 3 course at Craigieknowes Golf Club at Kippford. The popular villages of Rockcliffe and Kippford are in close proximity, Kippford has 2 small hotels, craft shop/small delicatessen, RNLI station, and the Solway sailing club. The nearby town of Dalbeattie has a good range of shops, cafes, hotels, restaurants, primary and secondary schools, doctors’ surgery, solicitors, and a park with a boating lake and bandstand. The market town of Castle Douglas is known as Scotland’s Food Town and has local individual shops, schools, supermarkets, health services, veterinary services and a thriving livestock market, and nine hole golf course. Dumfries is the principal town in the area, and provides a wider range of schools, shops, retail outlets, and other services including a major hospital, the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Dumfries is home to the Crichton campuses of Glasgow University and the University of the West of Scotland, as well as the multi-million pound sports and Leisure complex, DG One, which offers a variety of events including; theatre productions, cultural events, concerts, and conferences. The South West of Scotland is well known for its mild climate, attractive unspoilt countryside and the diversity of sporting and recreational pursuits. There is good hill walking in the nearby Galloway Hills and cycling along some of the new designated cycle routes as well the Seven Stanes mountain bike routes, including Dalbeattie Forest and the Galloway Forest Park. For walking enthusiast there are many lovely walks in the area for all abilities including from Kippford to the village of Rockcliffe along the Jubilee Path, and coastal walks along the cliffs at Portling to Sandyhills where there is a pretty beach. (Please note the tides on this stretch of the Solway Coast come in very quickly owing to the flat sands). There are other sporting opportunities such as shooting and stalking, as well as trout and salmon fishing on the regions numerous lochs and rivers. For golf enthusiasts there is the nearby championship course at Southerness, and there are several other courses nearby including Kippford, Dalbeattie, and Castle Douglas. The Solway coast is popular with sailors and Kippford and Kirkcudbright have safe moorings. In addition Kirkcudbright is the local Artists town with a number of galleries offering a range of exhibitions throughout the year. Communications to the area are good. There are mainline railway stations in both Dumfries and Lockerbie, providing excellent links to both the north and south. The M74 motorway network is 42 miles distant, and there are regular flights to other parts of the UK, Ireland and Continental Europe from Prestwick Airport which is about 68 miles to the north.
