V Olomouci dne Podpis Anotace Práce se zabývá hudebním žánrem k-pop, historií jeho vzniku, umělci, jejich rozvojem, a celkovým vlivem žánru na společnost. Snaží se přiblížit tento styl, který obsahuje řadu hudebních, tanečních a kulturních směrů, široké veřejnosti. Mimo samotnou podobu a historii k-popu se práce věnuje i temným stránkám tohoto fenoménu. V závislosti na dostupnosti literárních a internetových zdrojů zpracovává historii žánru od jeho vzniku až do roku 2020, spolu s tvorbou a úspěchy jihokorejských umělců. Součástí práce je i zpracování dvou dotazníků. Jeden zpracovává názor české veřejnosti na k-pop, druhý byl mířený na českou k-pop komunitu a její myšlenky ohledně tohoto žánru. Abstract This master´s thesis is describing music genre k-pop, its history, artists and their own evolution, and impact of the genre on society. It is also trying to introduce this genre, full of diverse music, dance and culture movements, to the public. -

Janus-faced Hana yori dango: Transnational Adaptations in East Asia and the Globalization Thesis Leo Tak-hung Chan Theories of regional formation need to be rigorously examined in relation to East Asian popular culture that has been in circulation under the successive “waves” of Japanese and Korean TV dramas from the 1990s onward. Most overviews of the phenomenon have concentrated on the impact on the region of Japanese, then Kore- an, TV products as they spread southward to the three Chinese communities of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China. In the voluminous studies devoted to the subject, most conspicuously represented by those of Iwabuchi Koichi, two outstand- ing points of emphasis are noteworthy.1) First, the majority of evidence is drawn from the so-called “trendy” love dramas, like Tokyo Love Story (1991), Long Vacation (1996), Love Generation (1996) and Beautiful Life (2000) from Japan as well as Autumn Tale (2000) and Winter Sonata (2002) from Korea.2) Many of them were so successful that they altered TV drama production in the receptor communities. -

Abstract The focus of this dissertation is to show how the media of contemporary Korean popular culture, specifically films, are transformed into “hybrid cultural forms” through the practice of genre transformation. Since the early 21st century, South Korean popular culture has been increasingly spreading across the globe. Despite its growing attention and popularity, Korean pop culture has been criticized for its explicit copying of Western culture with no unique cultural identity. Others view the success of Korean media, both its creative mimicry and its critique of the West, as a new hybrid form that offers the opportunity for reassertion of local identity as well as challenging the global hegemony of the West. -

Irish Journal of Asian Studies 1/1 (2015) 71 ©IJAS 2015 Book Review JungBong Choi and Roald Maliangkay: K-POP – The International Rise of the Korean Music Industry. New York/ London: Routledge, 2014. vii + 181pp. ISBN 978113 8775961 This edited book is one of the foremost sources on the contemporary phenomenon and development of the Korean popular music industry, known as K-pop. The methodology of cultural criticism is applied to penetrate the neoliberal globalisation of K-pop in Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. JungBong Choi and Roald Maliangkay have collected diverse testimonies of the transnational K-pop and its fandom feature (connoting active devotion). Although not thematically composed, four of the ten chapters on K-POP – The International Rise of the Korean Music Industry attempt to explore the history of the K-pop uniform, the political economy of idols and K-pop spectatorship. The regional quests (the other six chapters) witnessed the impact and challenge of K-pop overseas. The cyber-media of YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter were measured for feedback of the digital generations. While there is some controversy on the composition of K-pop as a type of hybridity, the authors argue that ‘augmented entertainment’ is the nature of K-pop’s identity. The first chapter (pp. 18-34) looks at the origin of K-pop. The visual uniformity in appearance and performance most likely originated from the colonial culture of Korea’s live theatre stages, which was influenced by Japanese entertainment companies in the early 1910s. The Samch’ ŏn kagŭktan (Three Streams Operetta Group) was depicted as offering “a type of all-female vaudeville” where they titillatingly performed in uniform costumes in the 1930s. -

Over the past decade, the number of RPF works written about K-pop idols has steadily increased, but RPF remains a controversial practice even within fanfiction communities. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the influence of fictional media practices such as fanfiction in the construction of the celebrity text. This thesis compares three practices found in K-pop RPF to three practices found in the K-pop industry in order to argue that K-pop fanfiction writers and the K-pop industry perform similar practices in pursuit of broader fan desires. Ultimately, the K-pop idol embodies a new model of celebrity that consciously moves between the “public” and the “private” in order to generate affective value. This movement is grounded in images of the idol’s physical body and given meaning through the idol group’s network of interpersonal relationships.
