Palavras chave: Adufe, pandeiro, bimembranofone vii ABSTRACT The adufe is a squared double-parched frame drum, commonly related to the folklore traditions of the Portuguese interior border zone. Beira-Baixa is the main region where it can be found, and Idanha-a-Nova made it its symbol. The origins of this instrument are very ancient, and the iconographic testimonies show us that its first appearance happened in the pre-Classic Antiquity of Mesopotamia, reaching the Iberian Peninsula around early Middle Ages, where it could be found both on the popular and court instrumentarium. It was used mainly by women, regardless of their political or religious order. The cultural processes that the interior border-region of Portugal was subjected to, made the adufe become one of the frozen cultural elements, that remained unchanged from the Middle Ages to the current day, sharing the distribution map of its use with its neighbour Spain, along the border field, plus the Galician, Asturian an Catalonian regions. This dissertation intends to get a contextual notion of the several cultural processes that the instrument has been subjected to through the ages in the Iberian Peninsula, crossing subjects like political and social History, Ethnomusicology, Ethnology, Musicology and Geography.

  • Pandeiro 1 Pandeiro
Pandeiro 1 Pandeiro Pandeiro Other names Pandeiro, drums Classification hand percussion Playing range High sound of jingles, plus some have a skin with a lower sound. Related instruments Riq, Buben, Dayereh, Daf, Kanjira, Frame drum The pandeiro (Portuguese pronunciation: [pɐ̃ˈdejɾu]) is a type of hand frame drum. There are two important distinctions between a pandeiro and the common tambourine. The tension of the head on the pandeiro can be tuned, allowing the player a choice of high and low notes. Also, the metal jingles (called platinelas in Portuguese) are cupped, creating a crisper, drier and less sustained tone on the pandeiro than on the tambourine. This provides clarity when swift, complex rhythms are played. It is held in one hand, and struck on the head by the other hand to produce the sound. Typical pandeiro patterns are played by alternating the thumb, fingertips, heel, and palm of the hand. A pandeiro can also be shaken to make sound, or one can run a finger along the head to create a "rasp" noise. The pandeiro is used in a number of Brazilian music forms, such as Samba, Choro, Coco, and Capoeira music (see Capoeira songs). The Brazilian pandeiro derives from the pandeireta or pandereta of Spain and Portugal. Some of the best-known pandeiro players today are Paulinho Da Costa, Airto Moreira, Marcos Suzano, Cyro Baptista, and Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro. Artists such as Stanton Moore use it non-traditionally by tuning it low to sound like a floor tom with jingles, mounting it on a stand and integrating it into the modern drum kit.

If I go to a party where I don’t know anybody except the person who invited me, how do I get to know anyone else? My host will probably be gracious enough to introduce me to others at the party. I will get to know their name, where they are from, and what they commonly do for work and play. In turn, they will get to know the same about me. We may decide to continue our relationship by learning more about each other and doing things together. As music therapy students, we develop relationships with music instruments. We begin by learning instrument names, and by getting to know a little about the instrument. We continue our relationship by learning technique and by playing music with them! UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON FACULTY OF LAW, ARTS & SOCIAL SCIENCES SCHOOL OF HUMANITIES Portfolio of compositions and commentary by Mohammad Hossein Karim Hadisi Portfolio of compositions and commentary for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2012 Portfolio of Compositions and Commentary Hossein Hadisi Preface The spiritual journey of many greatly influential figures throughout history has been subject to physical journeys. The enlightening visions and experiences that prophets, poets and thinkers have witnessed have given birth to new intellectual horizons that might not have been achieved, but for the challenges and adventures entwined with the nature of migration. The musical journey of my life, too, has been affected by the physical and spiritual journey I have made by leaving Iran. The nature of Persian music, also, takes one on a mystical journey of self-analysis and awareness. Inevitably, my music is the product of the culture I was raised in and the ones I have had the privilege of living in. My interpretation of these cultures, hermeneutics of humanities and understanding of music, is also strongly influenced by my personality and psychological characteristics. As a composer, I have always refrained from commenting on my own music. I find the experience somewhat challenging, yet amusing, non-musical, yet poetic and unnecessary, yet fruitful. In writing this commentary, I have re-visited some of the most intimate compositional experiences I have had and I am grateful for the depth of insight provided by this experience. 2 Portfolio of Compositions and Commentary Hossein Hadisi Table of Contents PREFACE ........................................................................................................................................ 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS ...................................................................................................................... 3 LIST OF TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS .........................................................................................................

Related instruments Riq, Buben, Dayereh, Daf, Kanjira, Frame drum The tambourine or marine (commonly called tambo) is a musical instrument of the percussion family consisting of a frame, often of wood or plastic, with pairs of small metal jingles, called "zils". Classically the term tambourine denotes an instrument with a drumhead, though some variants may not have a head at all. Tambourines are often used with regular percussion sets. They can be mounted, but position is largely down to preference. Tambourines come in many different shapes with the most common being circular. It is found in many forms of music: Greek folk music, Italian folk music, classical music, Persian music, gospel music, pop music and rock music. The word tambourine finds its origins in French tambourin, which referred to a long narrow drum used in Provence, the word being a diminutive of tambour "drum," altered by influence of Arabic tunbur "drum".[1] [2] Woman holding a mirror and a tambourine facing a from the Middle Persian word tambūr "lute, drum". winged genie with a ribbon and a branch with leaves. ROOTS OF RHYTHM - CHAPTER 16: THE DAF IN IRAQ Instrument: Daf, a Kurdish frame drum for spiritual ceremonies and peace-building. Country: Iraq Flag: The Iraqi flag has three equal horizontal bands of red, white, and black; the Takbir (Arabic expression meaning “God is great”) in green Arabic script is centered in the middle white band. The flag's design comes from the Arab Liberation colors. The Iraqi government's new Council of Representatives approved this flag as a temporary replacement for Iraq’s Saddam Hussein-era flag. Size and Population: Iraq's land area is 167,556 sq mi (433,970 sq km). The estimated population of Iraq as of July 2013 is 31,858,481. The capital and largest city, Baghdad, has a population of 5,772,000. Nearly three-quarters of Iraq's population lives in the flowing plains that extend southeast from Baghdad to the Persian Gulf. Geography and Climate: Iraq borders Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey. The country's landscape slopes from mountains over 11,800 feet high along Iran and Turkey's borders to marshes in the southeast at sea level on the Gulf Coast. While much of the land is desert, there are hilly, fertile valleys that provide much needed rich farmland. The enormous Zagros mountain range that begins in the Balkans runs into southern Turkey, northern Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan and finally ends in the Himalayas. The highest point of these mountains in Iraq is Cheekah Dar ("Black Tent") at 11,847 feet (3,611 m). The Zagros mountains have a total length of 954 miles (1500 km) from western Iran, on the border with Iraq, to the southern parts of the Persian Gulf.

The anonymous author of this treatise on musical instruments expresses a naive wish (col.5) that by means of it, he tfmay gain fame among his fellows, and honour and renown among all the exponents of the musical art who have gone beforeU Unfortunately - from more points of view than one - this very understandable desire for recognition seems Work to have been doomed to disappointment; his^is almost unknown to lexicographers, and has been completely so until comparatively recent times. The earliest reference which I have been able to find to its ^existence is in Al-Hilal,28,p.2I4, in an article, descriptive of the ^literary possessions of Egypt, by Ahmad Timur Pasha. Even here it is briefly dismissed as "Kashf al-Humum: a photographic copy of the original is in the Dar al-Kutub in CairoU The "Catalogue of Books on Music and Singing, and themr Authors, Preserved in the Dar al-Kutub", published in the year 1932, is a trifle more informative; it gives the following description.
