Approval of Minutes The Board Minutes from 17th September 2016 were unanimously approved by the Board. The Board Minutes from 28th October 2016 were unanimously approved by the Board. 3. Geckos on Australasia side of Wallace Line found to be growing to twice the size of those in Asia 8 October 2014, by Bob Yirka impact of what has become known as the Wallace Line—bent toed geckos on the Australasia side are growing bigger than their Asian cousins, particularly on the island of New Guinea. The researchers looked at 87 species of the bent toed variety of the lizard out of 180 believed to live in the area, from both sides of the Line—using ancestral state analysis revealed that geckos living on New Guinea were evolving to grow to be approximately twice as long as their Asian counterparts—roughly 35cm. Though the cause for the apparent rise of gigantism in the lizards can't be proved as yet, the A dwarf yellow-headed gecko. We visited Timor, Sumba, Flores and Komodo in search of Indonesia’s rarest and least known species, ending up on Bali in search of the famous starlings. These islands are relatively undeveloped, thinly populated and seldom visited by birders but they gave us access to some of the rarest birds on the planet. Starting on the largest island, Timor with its dry grassland, acacia scrub and montane forest, it is home to the greatest number of endemics. We had to split our time here in two due to a last-minute rescheduling of our internal flights and this did affect our success here a little but we still managed to see most of what the island has to offer. Then we flew across to the arid island of Sumba which is the most isolated and least often visited. -

The influence of space and time on the genetic architecture of rail species (Aves: Rallidae) A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Evolutionary Ecology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand JUAN CARLOS GARCIA RAMIREZ 2014 Abstract The main subject of this PhD research is the study of the underlying processes of evolutionary changes that lead to biological diversity. Such processes include those operating within and between populations (population divergence), as well as those operating among species (speciation), above the species level (e.g. genera and families) and the mechanisms that promote these divisions. Fundamental to these processes are the effects of genetic, demographic, geographical, ecological, behavioural and environmental factors on diversification. Rails (Aves: Rallidae) are used as an example to address central questions related to how these biological entities originated, when was that biological diversity generated, and why this biodiversity is distributed as it is. This thesis has been divided into four main chapters/papers for convenience to achieve this aim. In the first chapter, complete mitochondrial genomes and fossil data are used to provide a likely estimated time of rail ecology. I estimated that the origin and diversification of crown group Rallidae was during the Eocene about 40.5 (49–33) Mya with evidence of intrafamiliar diversification from Late Eocene to Miocene time. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. Flores Curatorial Circulations in Southeast Asia n Bangkok during the nineteenth century, the Thai king of the Chakri dynasty, Chulalongkorn, reserved a place in the royal palace for a museum he called phrabas phiphitaphan, or “a tour of various I 1 materials.” In the early part of the twentieth century, the American anthropologist, census-taker, and museum maker Dean Worcester went around the islands of the Philippines to document ethnicity. These forays share something with the toils of British explorer Sir Stamford Raffles, who, as recounted by an attentive observer, hoarded his people and things: “He kept four persons on wages, each in his peculiar department; one to go to the forests in search of various kinds of flowers, fungi, pulp, and such like products. Another he sent to collect all kinds of flies, grasshoppers, centipedes, bees, scorpions.”2 The intersection between the amassing of objects and people through the devices of the wunderkammer (a collection of objects without defined categories) and anthropometry (the study of human physical measurement in anthropology), well known in the discourse of reconnaissance, leads us to ponder the scale of the colonial in relation to the scale of the modern, the monument of empire and the miniature of periphery. Over time, this act of rendering the world picturesque and therefore collectible may be coincidental with the act of representation of both the self and the state, as can be gleaned in the efforts of the Thai king, the American social scientist, and the British discoverer. -

Method:The study was conducted in the maleo bird conservation area of PT. Panca Amara Utama in Uso Village, Batui District, Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, from August 2016 to December 2018, by using 10 1-day-old maleo birds. Variables observed included cloaca morphology, macrocephalon and estrogen hormone concentration. Results:The cloaca of Maleo birds has a difference. The difference is in the protrusion on the top of the cloaca. The male Maleo birds have a protrusion in the cloaca while the females do not have it. Organs in the form of protrusion in the cloaca are thought to be a sign of male sex. There are differences in shape and size between the male and female macrocephalon, the males have about 3.96 ± 011 cm width in average with rounded shape while the females have about 3.20 ± 0.10 cm width in average with oval shape. -

S c h u b a r t a n d F a b i a n H e r d e r 12.1 Introduction Some of the world’s most spectacular species radiations or species fl ocks are found in so-called ‘ancient lakes’. Th ese are long-lived lakes that have existed for 100 000 years (Gorthner et al. 1994 , but see also Albrecht and Wilke 2008 ) or more (e.g. Lake Tanganyika and Lake Baikal). Ancient lakes are justifi ably regarded as hotspots of diversifi cation (e.g. Martens 1997 , Rossiter and Kawanabe 2000 ), even if not all ancient lake species fl ocks match the diversity of the super-fl ock of East African cichlids (e.g. Kornfi eld and Smith 2000 , Kocher 2004 ). Studies on the evo- lution of ancient lake organisms have continuously resulted in important insights into general patterns of speciation and radiation (e.g. Streelman and Danley 2003 ) ever since the seminal review of Brooks ( 1950 ). During the last decade, smaller ancient lakes (c. <1 000 km 2 ), which are generally less well investigated, have attracted increasing attention. -

Influence of Conflict on Migration at Moluccas Province
INFLUENCE OF CONFLICT ON MIGRATION AT MOLUCCAS PROVINCE Maryam Sangadji Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Pattimura Ambon Abstraksi Konflik antara komunitas islam dan Kristen di propinsi Maluku menyebabkan lebih dari sepertiga populasi penduduknya atau 2,1 juta orang menjadi IDP (pengungsi) serta mengalami kemiskinan dan penderitaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti proses, dampak dan masalah yang dihadapi para IDP. Hasil analisis kualitatif deskriptif menunjukkan bahwa proses migrasi IDP ditentukan oleh tingkat intensitas konflik dan lebih marginal pada lokasi IDP. Disamping itu terlampau banyak masalah yang timbul dalam mengatasi IDP baik internal maupun eksternal. Kata kunci: konflik komunitas, Maluku. The phenomena of population move as the result of conflict among communities is a problem faced by development, due to population mobility caused by conflict occurs in a huge quantity where this population is categorized as IDP with protection and safety as the reason. The condition is different if migration is performed with economic motive, this means that they have calculate cost and benefit from the purposes of making migration. Since 1970s, there are many population mobility that are performed with impelled manner (Petterson, W, 1996), the example is Africa where due to politic, economic and social condition the individual in the continent have no opportunity to calculate the benefit. While in Indonesia the reform IDP is very high due to conflict between community as the symbol of religion and ethnic. This, of course, contrast with the symbol of Indonesian, namely “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, different but one soul, this condition can be seen from 683 multiethnic and there are 5 religions in Indonesia. In fact, if the differences are not managed, the conflict will appear, and this condition will end on open conflict. -
Languages of Flores
Are the Central Flores languages really typologically unusual? Alexander Elias January 13, 2020 1 Abstract The isolating languages of Central Flores (Austronesian) are typologically distinct from their nearby relatives. They have no bound morphology, as well elaborate numeral clas- sifier systems, and quinary-decimal numeral system. McWhorter (2019) proposes that their isolating typology is due to imperfect adult language acquisition of a language of Sulawesi, brought to Flores by settlers from Sulawesi in the relatively recent past. I pro- pose an alternative interpretation, which better accounts for the other typological features found in Central Flores: the Central Flores languages are isolating because they have a strong substrate influence from a now-extinct isolating language belonging to the Mekong- Mamberamo linguistic area (Gil 2015). This explanation better accounts for the typological profile of Central Flores and is a more plausible contact scenario. Keywords: Central Flores languages, Eastern Indonesia, isolating languages, Mekong- Mamberamo linguistic area, substrate influence 2 Introduction The Central Flores languages (Austronesian; Central Malayo-Polynesian) are a group of serialising SVO languages with obligatory numeral classifier systems spoken on the island of Flores, one of the Lesser Sunda Islands in the east of Indonesia. These languages, which are almost completely lacking in bound morphology, include Lio, Ende, Nage, Keo, Ngadha and Rongga. Taken in their local context, this typological profile is unusual: other Austronesian languages of eastern Indonesia generally have some bound morphology and non-obligatory numeral classifier systems. However, in a broader view, the Central Flores languages are typologically similar to many of the isolating languages of Mainland Southeast Asia and Western New Guinea, many of which are also isolating, serialising SVO languages with obligatory numeral classifier systems. -

Survei burung dengan menggunakan metode titik hitung dan jaring telah dilakukan di Halmahera, Maluku Utara di empat lokasi utama yaitu Wosea, Ake Jira, Tofu Blewen dan Bokit Mekot. Sebanyak 70 spesies burung dari 32 famili dijumpai selama penelitian lapangan. Keragaman burung tertinggi ditemukan di Tofu Blewen yaitu 50 spesies (Indeks Shannon = 2.64) kemudian diikuti oleh Ake Jira (48 spesies, Indeks Shannon = 2,63), Wosea (41 spesies, Indeks Shannon = 2,54) dan Boki Mekot (37 spesies, Indeks Shannon = 2,52 ). Berdasarkan Indeks Kesamaan Jaccard, komunitas burung di Wosea jauh berbeda dibandingkan lokasi lain. Gangguan habitat dan ketinggian memperlihatkan pengaruh pada keragaman burung terutama pada jenis-jenis endemik dan terancam seperti komunitas di Wosea. Beberapa jenis burung, terutama paruh bengkok seperti Kakatua Putih, menunjukkan hubungan negatif dengan ketinggian . Bird surveys by point counts and mist-nets were carried out in Halmahera, North Moluccas at four locations i.e. Wosea, Ake Jira, Tofu Blewen and Bokit Mekot. A total of 70 birds species from 32 families were recorded during fieldworks.
