Two New Species of Eimeria and Three New Species of Isospora (Apicomplexa, Eimeriidae) from Brazilian Mammals and Birds

Two new species of Eimeria and three new species of Isospora (Apicomplexa, Eimeriidae) from Brazilian mammals and birds by R. LAINSON and J. J. SHAW Abstract. — Thirteen " four-eyed opossums ", Philander o. opossum, from Para State, north Brazil, were examined for coccidial oocysts in faecal samples. Five were infected with an eimerian, considered a new species, 2 with an isosporan which is possibly /. boughtoni Volk, and 2 with both thèse parasites. Oocysts of Eimeria philanderi n. sp., are spherical to subspherical and average 23.50 x 22.38 (21.25- 27.50 x 18.75-25.00) (xm : single polar body : no oocyst residuum. Oocyst wall 1.88 [ira, with mamillated surface and composed of two striated layers, the inner brown-yellow and the outer colourless : no micropyle. Sporocysts average 11.35 x 8.13 (10.00-12.00 x 7.50-8.75) (xm, oval to ellipsoidal, with prominent nipple-like Stieda body : residuum bulky, compact or scattered between two recurved sporozoites. Oocysts of the Isospora sp., close to /. boughtoni initially sub-spherical, 17.92 x 16.53 (16.25- 20.00 x 13.75-18.75) (xm : latterly deformed by collapse of the délicate, colourless wall : no micropyle, oocyst residuum or polar body. Sporocysts 13.35 x 9.88 (12.50-13.75 x 8.75-11.25) (xm, ellipsoidal, with no Stieda body. Two of 5 " woolly opossums ", Caluromys p. philander, were infected with an eimerian considered as a new species, Eimeria caluromydis n. -

Submission to BirdLife Australia Rarities Committee Submission No. Species: Blue-winged pitta Pitta moluccensis Location: Christmas Island Observation Date: 14 December 1901 Submission Date Submitted by: Ian McAllan Address: Circumstances The Blue-winged Pitta Pitta moluccensis is on the BARC Australian Checklist based upon a specimen collected on Christmas Island in 1901 and housed in the Museum of Zoology, University of Cambridge, UK (Benson 1970; Christidis & Boles 1994). Two records have since been submitted to BARC from mainland Western Australia (Cases 219 & 241), and the author is aware of another four reports, three from mainland Western Australia and one from Christmas Island (c.f. Serventy 1968; Johnstone & Hamilton 1995; Johnstone & Storr 2004; James & McAllan 2014). This submission concerns only the 1901 specimen, which has not been reviewed by BARC. The specimen was examined and photographed during a visit to the Museum of Zoology, University of Cambridge, UK on 29 May 2018. Benson’s account of the specimen. Benson noted that the specimen was received from H.E. Durham, of whom he gave no other information. He also noted that the specimen had originally been identified as Pitta vigorsii , now a subspecies of Elegant Pitta Pitta elegans . Benson noted that there were some other specimens in the Cambridge University collection that were Christmas Island endemics that were collected by Benson at the same time. Dr H.E. Durham In 1901–1903 Dr Herbert Edward Durham was the leader of an expedition from the London School of Tropical Medicine to Christmas Island and Malaya to study beri beri (Lapage 1945). At his time there was an outbreak of the vitamin deficiency disease with 229 people dying on the Island during that year (Adams & Neale 1993). -

Dec. 11, 2013 – Jan. 01, 2014 Thailand (Central and Northern) Species Trip List Compiled by Carlos Sanchez (HO)= Distinctive enough to be counted as heard only Summary: After having traveled through much of the tropical Americas, I really wanted to begin exploring a new region of the world. Thailand instantly came to mind as a great entry point into the vast and diverse continent of Asia, home to some of the world’s most spectacular birds from giant hornbills to ornate pheasants to garrulous laughingthrushes and dazzling pittas. I took a little over three weeks to explore the central and northern parts of this spectacular country: the tropical rainforests of Kaeng Krachen, the saltpans of Pak Thale and the montane Himalayan foothill forests near Chiang Mai. I left absolutely dazzled by what I saw. Few words can describe the joy of having your first Great Hornbill, the size of a swan, plane overhead; the thousands of shorebirds in the saltpans of Pak Thale, where I saw critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper; the tear-jerking surprise of having an Eared Pitta come to bathe at a forest pool in the late afternoon, surrounded by tail- quivering Siberian Blue Robins; or the fun of spending my birthday at Doi Lang, seeing Ultramarine Flycatcher, Spot-breasted Parrotbill, Fire-tailed Sunbird and more among a 100 or so species. Overall, I recorded over 430 species over the course of three weeks which is conservative relative to what is possible. Thailand was more than a birding experience for me. It was the Buddhist gong that would resonate through the villages in the early morning, the fresh and delightful cuisine produced out of a simple wok, the farmers faithfully tending to their rice paddies and the amusing frost chasers at the top of Doi Inthanon at dawn. -

Lyon Arboretum Docent Manual Birds of Lyon Arboretum Commonly Sighted Birds at Lyon Arboretum 1. Common Mynah Acridotheres tristis This urban bird is common and widespread in lowland areas of all main Hawaiian Islands; recently established on Midway. Mynahs were introduced from India in 1865 to control army worms, an agricultural pest in pasturelands. The body is about 9 inches long, the two sexes are alike in plumage. The back and neck are brown, the head is black with yellow around the eye and on the bill and legs. Its call is mostly a chatter, sometimes mimicking other birds. Mynahs are loud, aggressive and often comical with their cocky walk. They nest in trees and buildings and can even be seen nesting in stop lights. At sunset, Mynahs often gather and noisily roost in trees. Their nest is made of grasses, leaves, paper and trash, and they especially seem to like shiny bits of plastic in the lining of the nest. The mynah has relatives that have been introduced to the mainland. These relatives include the Crested Mynah from Vancouver, British Columbia, and the Starling found throughout North America. 2. Common Waxbill Estrilda astrild Very small red-billed, brown finch with a prominent red streak from the bill through the eye. Rump brown, undertail coverts black. Introduced to O`ahu from Africa early 20th century. Escaped pet, first identified in late 1970s. Widespread on O`ahu. Smallest finch at the Arboretum. Commonly seen in large groups. The song is a weak twittering, chip-chip-tooee, chip-chip-tooee. 3. Feral Chicken Gallus gallus Feral chickens are commonly found in the lower Arboretum grounds, hiding amongst the shrubs and trees. -

Among birds, many studies have shown that tropical species have a slower pace of life than temperate-breeding species. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. TRAINOR In June-July 2000, a 10-day avifaunal survey on Gunung Tambora (2,850 m, site of the greatest volcanic eruption in recorded history), revealed an extraordinary mountain with a rather ordinary Sumbawan avifauna: low in total species number, with all species except two oriental montane specialists (Sunda Bush Warbler Cettia vulcania and Lesser Shortwing Brachypteryx leucophrys) occurring widely elsewhere on Sumbawa. Only 11 of 19 restricted-range bird species known for Sumbawa were recorded, with several exceptional absences speculated to result from the eruption. These included: Flores Green Pigeon Treron floris, Russet-capped Tesia Tesia everetti, Bare-throated Whistler Pachycephala nudigula, Flame-breasted Sunbird Nectarinia solaris, Yellow-browed White- eye Lophozosterops superciliaris and Scaly-crowned Honeyeater Lichmera lombokia. All 11 resticted- range species occurred at 1,200-1,600 m, and ten were found above 1,600 m, highlighting the conservation significance of hill and montane habitat. ABSTRACT Fringillidae finches form a subfamily of songbirds (Passeriformes), which are presently distributed around the world. This subfamily includes canaries, goldfinches, greenfinches, rosefinches, and grosbeaks, among others. Molecular phylogenies obtained with mitochondrial DNA sequences show that these groups of finches are put together, but with some polytomies that have apparently evolved or radiated in parallel. The time of appearance on Earth of all studied groups is suggested to start after Middle Miocene Epoch, around 10 million years ago. Greenfinches (genus Carduelis) may have originated at Eurasian desert margins coming from Rhodopechys obsoleta (dessert finch) or an extinct pale plumage ancestor; it later acquired green plumage suitable for the greenfinch ecological niche, i.e.: woods. Multicolored Eurasian goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) has a genetic extant ancestor, the green-feathered Carduelis citrinella (citril finch); this was thought to be a canary on phonotypical bases, but it is now included within goldfinches by our molecular genetics phylograms. Speciation events between citril finch and Eurasian goldfinch are related with the Mediterranean Messinian salinity crisis (5 million years ago). Linurgus olivaceus (oriole finch) is presently thriving in Equatorial Africa and was included in a separate genus (Linurgus) by itself on phenotypical bases. Our phylograms demonstrate that it is and old canary. Proposed genus Acanthis does not exist. Twite and linnet form a separate radiation from redpolls. -
