MEMORIES OF COLNE By Mrs. Cryer, of Burnley (Formerly Miss Margaret Jane Ward, of Colne) in Collaboration with Mr. Willie Bell, of Burnley (Formerly of Colne) Reprinted from the “Colne and Nelson Times” March to August 1910 (Scanned with optical character recognition and reformatted by Craig Thornber, January 1998) -1- Introduction In 1910, Mrs. Cryer produced a series of articles for the “Colne and Nelson Times”, recalling her memories of Colne in the 1850’s. She had a remarkable memory and recounted the names and details of most of the town’s shop-keepers and their families. The book is a treasure trove for all those with family history interests in Colne in the middle of last century. To my delight, at the end of Chapter IV, I found mention of Miss Margaret Cragg, the sister of my great great grandfather. The book based on Mrs. Cryer’s articles is now very rare, so the opportunity has been taken to reproduce it. This version has been produced from a photocopy of the book by computer scanning, using an optical character recognition programme. Computer scanning is never completely accurate, particularly with punctuation marks, and when working from a document with low contrast. While the final version has been subjected to proof reading and computer based spelling checks, a few errors may remain, for which I am responsible. Many of the sentences and paragraphs are very long and the division into chapters is somewhat arbitrary, but the book has been reproduced as written. The numbering of chapter XIII has been corrected and a few changes have been made to the format for reasons of clarity. -

Trawden Forest Neighbourhood Plan (2018-2030) Final Version Trawden Forest Parish Council Autumn 2018 Foreword This Neighbourhood Plan sets out planning policies for the parish of Trawden Forest. It has been developed with the involvement of local people to ensure that they have a say in how their parish will develop up to 2030. It adds detail to the Pendle Local Plan and will be used alongside it to help determine planning applications in the parish. The Trawden Forest Neighbourhood Plan is the responsibility of Trawden Forest Parish Council and has been developed by a Steering Group consisting of Parish Council members and other volunteers, with professional advice from Pendle Council’s Planning Department. It has been supported by Pendle Borough Council and received financial support from the Government’s Neighbourhood Planning Grant Scheme. One of the main objectives of the Neighbourhood Plan is to direct the amount of housing to be built in Trawden up to 2030 – a figure established in the Pendle Local Plan – to the most appropriate and sustainable locations within the Parish. Where possible the sites selected will help to protect and enhance existing infrastructure assets and provide a positive benefit to residents. As you read through the Plan, you will see how this can be achieved. There is however, much more to a Neighbourhood Plan than housing development. In the questionnaire delivered to every household in September 2016 we asked local residents for their hopes, concerns and ideas for the parish, both now and in the future. From these responses we identified several areas of importance to local people. -

PENDLE BOROUGH COUNCIL CEMETERIES RULES AND REGULATIONS In accordance with the Local Authorities Cemeteries Order 1977 David Walker Service Manager Parks and Recreation Services Fleet Street Nelson Lancashire BB9 7YQ Page 1 PENDLE BOROUGH COUNCIL Regulations for the General Management Control and Regulation of all Cemeteries within the Authority of the Pendle Borough Council. INTERPRETATION OF TERMS In the construction of these Regulations, the following words have the meanings hereinafter respectively assigned to them, that is to say: “The Council” means the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Pendle. “The Cemeteries” means the cemeteries provided by the Council at Barnoldswick, Barrowford, Colne, Earby, Nelson and Salterforth, within the said District of Pendle. “Purchased Grave” means a grave space where the exclusive right of the burial has been granted. “The Service Manager, Parks and Recreation Services” means the person for the time being holding office by that designation under the Council and the person who shall be acting for him in his absence. “Memorial” means any gravestone, tomb, monument, cross, flatstone, or other monumental work. GENERAL 1 The office of the Service Manager, Parks and Recreation Services shall be open on Mondays to Fridays inclusive from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. The office will not be open on Saturdays, Sundays and Statutory Holidays except at the discretion of the Service Manager, Parks and Recreation Services. 2 Plans showing the general divisions and particular sections of each cemetery together with the grave spaces therein are available for inspection at the office of the Service Manager, Parks and Recreation Services and may be seen free of charge during office hours.
