    PART I BACKGROUND TO INQUIRY 1. Cricket has always put itself forth as a gentleman’s game. However, this aspect of the game has come under strain time and again, sadly with increasing regularity. From BodyLine to Trevor Chappel bowling under-arm, from sledging to ball tampering, instances of gamesmanship have been on the rise. Instances of sportsmanship like Courtney Walsh refusing to run out a Pakistani batsman for backing up too soon in a crucial match of the 1987 World Cup; Imran Khan, as Captain calling back his counterpart Kris Srikanth to bat again after the latter was annoyed with the decision of the umpire; batsmen like Majid Khan walking if they knew they were out; are becoming rarer yet. Now, with the massive influx of money and sheer increase in number of matches played, cricket has become big business. Match-fixing is an international threat. It is quite possibly an international reality too. Donald Topley, a former county cricketer, wrote in the Sunday Mirror in 1994 that in a county match between Essex and Lancashire in 1991 Season, both the teams were heavily paid to fix the match.     PCB Highlights 1 April – 30 June 5th Edition PCB to spend PKR5.29billion on cricket in 2020-21 season The Board of Governors of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) held their second meeting of the year via a videoconference in which they approved a PKR7.76billion operating expenditure budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year. This was a 10 per cent reduction from the 2019-20 fiscal year as the PCB continued its austerity drive as part of its financial management exercise. While budgets were reduced in other functional areas, there was no reduction in cricket-related activities as the PCB committed to spending PKR5.29billion on cricket over the next 12 months. This includes PKR1.8billion in High Performance, PKR1.4bil- lion on international cricket, PKR1.4billion on HBL Pakistan Super League 2021, PKR109million on Medical and Sports Sciences, PKR411million on women’s cricket and PKR39million on disabled cricket. The High Performance has the biggest budget as it incorporates domestic cricket expenses as following restructuring, the acade- mies and domestic cricket have been brought under one umbrella. This cost includes players/match officials/curator contracts, domestic events and their prize moneys and academy programmes.     Saleem Yousuf (Pakistan 1982 to 1990) Pakistan hosted the West Indies in 1986-87. Expecting a gruelling Test series, Imran Khan wanted known fighters in his team. Zulqarnain had kept wicket in Pakistan’s previous Test series against Sri Lanka and in the following One Day International (ODI) tournaments. Anil Dilpat was wicketkeeper in the first of two three-day tour games and in an ODI against the West Indies in October 1986. For the second three-day game, just a week before the opening Test, Imran brought in Saleem Yousuf and retained him for the series. Afterwards Imran felt his choice was vindicated: “In Salim Yousuf, Pakistan had found a courageous player and one who could handle a crisis.” When Pakistan toured the West Indies later in 1987-88, Saleem, despite a broken nose from being hit in the face in the first innings, came in at No. 9 in the second and played a vital innings of 28, adding 51 runs, to help set West Indies a testing score at Bridgetown. Wasim Akram considered Saleem “not the tidiest keeper, but he’s one of the bravest batsman I’ve ever seen.” Saleem Yousuf contributed much to Pakistan’s rise to the summit in Test cricket from 1986. Successes against West Indies, and series wins over India, England (twice), Australia and New Zealand meant that when Pakistan and the West Indies met in late 1990 the series was regarded as the unofficial world championship. Saleem played only in the first Test in that 1990 series, finishing his Test career by helping Pakistan take the lead.

We generate batting partnership network (BPN) for different teams and determine the exact values of clustering coefficient, average degree, average shortest path length of the networks and compare them with the Erd¨os-R´enyi model. We observe that the networks display small-world behavior. We find that most connected batsman is not necessarily the most central and most central players are not necessarily the one with high batting averages. We study the community structure of the BPNs and identify each player’s role based on inter-community and intra-community links. We observe that Sir DG Bradman, regarded as the best batsman in Cricket history does not occupy the central position in the network − the so-called connector hub. We extend our analysis to quantify the performance, relative importance and effect of removing a player from the team, based on different centrality scores.
