This was Casey’s type of event with wide open valleys, mountainous terrain, and breath taking desert floors. You’ll experience racing across smooth- as-glass lakebeds and roads that weave their way through mining camps all across rural Nevada. Casey loved being a native of the Battle Born state and this race showcases the challenging and diverse terrain of Nevada. It is the race that built the foundation for Best In The Desert to not only have motorcycles but also the introduction of cars, trucks and quads to the series in 1996. Then in 2005, Best In The Desert introduced another type of vehicle, UTVs, and we became the 1st racing association to allow UTVs to compete in long distance desert racing!! Since this race has such a strong history for Best In The Desert, it is only fitting that we name this event after our founder, Casey Folks. We are proud to introduce the 2019 General Tire Casey Folks “Vegas to Reno” presented by FOX. Casey’s passion for this sport was undeniable, and it continues to show through his organization today. One of our biggest goals is to keep this long distance event thriving and introduce it to a new generation of racers and fans. The 2019 General Tire Casey Folks “Vegas to Reno” presented by FOX will be an event that will create memories that will last a lifetime. You, the racer, will find out first hand, along with your family and friends, the true spirit of camaraderie. With the expectation of record breaking entries and the legendary “Casey Folks” name and spirit imbedded, the event is destined to be a huge success. I am so proud you are joining an elite group of off-road desert racers and the entire Best In The Desert crew for the General Tire Casey Folks “Vegas to Reno” presented by FOX. Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.

POV Community Engagement & Education Discussion GuiDe Racing Dreams A Film by Marshall Curry www.pbs.org/pov PoV LetteR fRom the fiLmmakeR Brooklyn , n ew york , 2011 Before i started making this film, i didn’t really know anything about car racing, and i’m sorry to say, ignorance about racing is pretty typical in new york, where i live. But i knew it wasn‘t typical for the country as a whole. nAscAr is reportedly the second biggest spectator sport in America after football - bigger than baseball or basketball. And i have a lot of family in north carolina, so i knew how much passion for the sport there is down there. i began to wonder how it was possible that in a city like new york, where we’re exposed to such an amazing variety of cul - tures, so many people could know so little about America’s second-favorite pastime. it seemed like something i should learn about if i wanted to understand the red-state/blue-state divide (or, more accurately, the new york/rest-of-the-country di - vide) and so i wrote down “nAscAr” and dropped it into the file i keep of documentary ideas. soon afterward, i read an article about extreme go-kart racing—a nationally competitive sport in which 11 and 12 year olds drive karts that go 70 mph(!). it’s widely considered the little league for nAscAr, and a lot of the top professional drivers started out that way in doing it. i thought that sounded pretty amazing, and one of the things i love about making docu - mentaries is it lets me spend a year or two learning about things i don’t know about.
