Film & Tv Live Shows Nice Things People
Comedian. Writer. Craft Enthusiast. Razor sharp, daring and downright lascivious, Rhys Nicholson is a wit quickly gaining international acclaim. After winning Best Newcomer at Sydney Comedy Festival in 2012, Rhys has gone on to perform all over the world, including Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Dublin’s Vodafone Comedy Festival and London’s prestigious SOHO Theatre, garnering audience and critical praise. They also quite liked his nice jackets. It’s been a huge few years for Rhys, his most recent solo show Seminal has had great success both in Australia and overseas taking out the Best International Show Award at the 2018 New Zealand International Comedy Festival. This was after a tremendous 2017 in which Rhys picked up an ARIA nomination for Best Comedy Release for his filmed special ‘Live at Darlinghurst Theatre’. Rhys has also received a nomination for the illustrious Barry Award for his 2016 show ‘Bona Fide’. Aside from gaining huge acclaim for his solo shows, Rhys publicly married lesbian and fellow comedian Zoe Coombs Marr at the 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival to highlight the importance of marriage equality in Australia. He was also the subject of an Archibald Prize finalist by Melissa Ritchie entitled ‘Rhys Smart Mouth’. Rhys has plastered his jagged face all over Australian TV - chatting candidly to the Prime Minister about red heads (and other things) on Ch10’s The Project, a panellist on the new comedy show CRAM, co-host with Joel Creasey of ABCTV’s celebrated documentary GayCrashers, appeared on Dirty Laundry Live, Hughesy We Have A Problem and on Channel 7 Morning Show’s Style Squad. -
Joel Creasey
JOEL CREASEY “Creasey is an unstoppable force and the crown prince of Aussie comedy.” - The Daily Telegraph At just 26 years old, Joel Creasey is one of Australia's most-popular, acclaimed and charmingly controversial stand-up comedians. Starting stand up at only 15 years old, in his mere 10 year career Joel has harnessed his outrageous wit, sass and unrivalled story telling abilities to cement himself as Australia's undisputed 'Crown Prince of Comedy' and one of the most-sought after and hottest comedians in the world. Every year Joel’s live show audiences grow, as punters in the know flock for an hour of no-holds-barred belly laughs. The 26-year-old has cemented a reputation for slicing, dicing and smashing through celebrity and pop culture, and himself, with unflinching candour and brutal home truths. Creasey cuts through celebrity spin to tell you how it is with charm, irreverence and the ultimate payoff of epic laughs. 2017 shall be no exception as Joel embarks on his national tour aptly entitled ‘Joel Creasey – Poser’. A self-described shameless "fame whore", Joel has become a television staple and most recently hosted the glittering explosion that is the 2017 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. The TV broadcast included the best of the floats, costumes and featured interviews with celebrity guests plus stories from some of the parade participants - exploring the messages behind the floats, covering issues of sexuality, equality and discrimination that affect the LGBTQI community. Joel is the current host of Network Ten's Just For Laughs specials, highlighting the best of the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, where he has worked alongside such icons as Neil Patrick Harris, Sir Patrick Stewart, Jane Lynch, Ellie Kemper, Carrie Fisher, Alan Carr, Jeff Goldblum and Alan Cumming. -

'Just Like Us'?
‘Just like us’? Investigating how LGBTQ Australians read celebrity media Lucy Watson A thesis submitted to fulfil requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences The University of Sydney 2019 Statement of originality This is to certify that to the best of my knowledge, the content of this thesis is my own work. This thesis has not been submitted for any degree or other purposes. A version of Chapter Nine appears in the book Gender and Australian Celebrity Culture (forthcoming), edited by Anthea Taylor and Joanna McIntyre. I certify that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work and that all the assistance received in preparing this thesis and sources have been acknowledged. Lucy Watson 25th September 2019 i Abstract In the 21st century, celebrity culture is increasingly pervasive. Existing research on how people (particularly women) read celebrity indicates that celebrity media is consumed for pleasure, as a way to engage in ‘safe’ gossip amongst imagined, as well as real, communities about standards of morality, and as a way to understand and debate social and cultural behavioural standards. The celebrities we read about engage us in a process of cultural identity formation, as we identify and disidentify with those whom we consume. Celebrities are, as the adage goes, ‘just like us’ – only richer, more talented, or perhaps better looking. But what about when celebrities are not ‘just like us’? Despite relatively recent changes in the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) life in the media, the world of celebrity is an overwhelmingly heterosexual one. -
