After helping lead the Tigers to the first ever overall National Championship and a Hunt Seat Reserve Cham- pionship in 2006. Last season, she led the Tigers to their first ever Hunt Seat National Champion- ship at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships. Neubarth graduated from Auburn University in 2003 with a B.S. degree in psychology, criminology and a minor in Spanish. As a member of the club team, Neubarth was chosen to assist in coaching for the 2000 season. In her senior year, she was the 12th ranked hunt seat rider in the country and was high point hunt seat rider for the Southeast Region. That same year, she was named the 2003 Region High Point Rider of the Year. Not only did Neubarth excel in the arena, but also in the classroom. She was an SEC Academic All-American and a SAAC representative for two years. Neubarth’s passion for horses began at the age of 7 when she began to take lessons. Her first competition was at the age of 9. Eight months prior to coaching at Auburn, Neubarth was the administrative aide to Representative Thom Col- lier from Ohio. After graduation, she was road manager for Branch Hill Farm in Cincinnati where she managed and rode nationally-ranked horses and ponies on the hunter and jumper “AA” show circuit. In 2004, Neubarth was named assistant coach after the passing of long time assistant coach Herb Schneider. Neubarth is currently working on her master’s degree in sports management. She is the daughter of Skip and Corky Neubarth and has three sibblings. Neubarth is also the aunt of six.

6 AAUBURNUBURN WESTERN COACH LISA HELFER

Lisa Helfer enters her second season as an assistant Western coach for Auburn. Last season, she led the Tigers to the second round in Western at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships. Lisa has been working with and around horses for over 24 years. She graduated from the Univer- sity of Findlay in 1998 with a BS in Western Equestrian Studies and a minor in Business Management. While at Findlay she competed for the Western IHSA team as both an Open Horsemanship and Reining rider. After graduation she went on to train and coach both young and amateur riders. Lisa has shown extensively in 4-H, Open, AQHA, and NSBA events, specializing in all-around com- petition. She has earned year-end awards in both the Ohio and Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Associations in Show- manship, Horsemanship, and Equitation classes. Lisa has also competed as an amateur and been a finalist at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress. Lisa holds her Ohio judges card and judges both open and 4-H competitions. In conjunction, she is active with the 4-H youth and provides a number of clinics each year. Beyond training and judging Lisa has also spent five years as a reproduction specialist managing some of the top reproduction facilities in Ohio and Florida. Before Auburn, Lisa was em- ployed by Miami University of Ohio, where she was an instructor of riding and the coach of the Western IHSA Equestrian team. During her two years as western coach she led the team to two regional championships, a zone reserve championship, a trip to the national semi-finals, and a top-ten finish at the IHSA Nationals. She also coached the regional high point west- ern rider two years in a row. Besides horses, Lisa has been playing competive ice hockey for the past 25 years. She has traveled throughout the USA, Canada and Finland playing on both women’s and co-ed teams.

AAUBURNUBURN 7 SEASON UPDATE

The Tigers opened the spring season with a dominating 17- 2 win against Delaware State on Jan. 24. However, the Ti- gers good fortune ran out on Feb. 7, when they hosted South Carolina and lost a close one 10-8. After losing for the first time of the season, the Tigers then traveled to Athens, Ga., on Feb. 28 to face the Bulldogs. Au- burn lost 12-7 for only the second time this year. Auburn would then travel to Texas on March 7-8 to face Baylor and Southern Methodist. The Tigers rebounded very nicely winning 11-9 against Baylor and 7-3 against Southern Methodist. The Tigers left the Plains again to face Kansas State and Oklahoma State on March 13-14. The Tigers lost both meets 11-9. Auburn returned home, but only to have its last home meet of the spring canceled due to severe weather. With the good and the bad of the regular season behind them, the Tigers can focus on the postseason. The Tigers will travel to Athens for the Southern Equestrian Championships April 3-4 and will travel to Waco, Texas, for the Varsity Equestrian Championships April 16-18 looking to defend their Hunt Seat title. Auburn looks to have an exciting finish to the season as it plans to contend for its third national championship.

Auburn has had its ups and downs in the 2008-09 season. After winning the 2008 Hunt Seat national championship, the Tigers are poised for another national championship run. The Tigers had five home meets at the Auburn Equestrian Center with two in the fall and three in the spring. The 2008 Hunt Seat national champions opened the fall season with a 14-4 win against Fresno State on Sept. 19. They followed up that performance with a 10-6 win at conference rival South Carolina on Oct.4. Auburn returned home to take on the defending overall na- tional champions and conference rival Georgia on Oct. 18. The Tigers had an impressive 12-5 win and finished the fall season undefeated. “This is a huge win,” said Auburn head coach Greg Wil- liams. “Georgia is one of those teams that will come to your place and beat you. We’re a much stronger team than I think we’ve been in the past. I think we showed that when we picked up a road win in South Carolina, but to have a convincing win at home shows how good these girls are. The great thing about them is we still see improvement all the time, so if they will stay on a continuing plane like that in the spring then we’re going to have a great nationals.”

AAUBURNUBURN 29 JUDGING

WHAT THE JUDGES ARE LOOKING FOR

Varsity Equestrian tests five riders from each team in one-on-one competitions. Five horses are selected for each event and five riders represent their respective teams. Each team selects one of the five horses in a draw before the competition. They are able to watch the horse warm up and then they receive four minutes to practice on their selected mount before competing. In each event there are individual maneuvers that are scored separately and then added up at the end of the ride for the rider’s total score. The lowest score is dropped and the remaining four are then added for the team’s competition total. In NCAA competition, the level of difficulty is demonstrated by the accuracy of the pattern and how the competition uses the horse that they draw to the best of its ability.

Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences - The judges evaluate the rider’s position, consistency of course, smoothness, flow form jump to jump, the number of strides (steps taken by the horse) in a line and the rider’s plan to complete the jumps. Scor- ing for the event is out of 100 with 100 being a perfect score.

Hunt Seat Equitation on the Flat - The riders have to perform a flat test on their horses in a 40 x 20 meter arena. The test consists of nine movements to be judged on accuracy, smoothness and overall position of the rider. Each movement receives a score from 1-10. A tenth score judges the position and seat of the rider and the correctness and effect of their aids. The score is out of a 100 with 100 being a perfect score.

Western Horsemanship - This event is designed to evaluate the rider’s ability to execute, in concert with her horse, a prescribed set of maneuvers with precision and smoothness while maintaining a balanced, functional and fundamentally correct body position. The ideal horsemanship pattern is extremely precise with the rider and horse working in complete union, executing each maneuver with subtle aids and cues. Exhibitors are scored for each sequence of maneuvers with a -1.5 to +1.5 score for each maneuver with a base score beginning at 70.

Western Reining - This is a class based on set patterns and precise scoring system. Within these patterns the horse and rid- ers athletic ability are tested in a series of maneuvers including spins, stops, flying lead changes and circles with changes in size and speed. In intercollegiate competition, the rider must perform one of the set National Reining Horse Associa- tion (NHRA) patterns. There are a total of eight parts to a reining test with each individual maneuver judged from -1.5 to +1.5 with base score beginning at 70.

30 AAUBURNUBURN ABOUT EQUESTRIAN

KEY TERMS ROLL BACK A turn performed in equitation over fences class to show control of the horse and rider’s ability to maintain a posi- AIDS tion throughout a turn. A tight turn performed between two Signals or cues by which the rider communicates her wish- fences. In Western reining, a rollback is a 180 degree pivot es to the horse. The “natural” aids include the voice, legs, with speed after a halt. hands and weight. “Artificial” aids include the whip and spurs. SLIDING STOP A stop in which the horse balances on the back feet while COMBINATION continuing to move the front feet. A series of jumps set within a stride or two of each other. TACK DIAGONALS Riding equipment. Movements that test to coordination of the riders posting and up-down motion with the diagonal movement of the horse’s legs while trotting.

EQUITATION In riding competitions, this indicates that riders are being judged on their ability to control the horse while main- taining the correct riding position. Riders have the added challenge of riding an unfamiliar horse which they draw in a lottery system just prior to their class.

GAITS The different paces at which the horse travels are the walk, trot, lope, canter, gallop, and varying speeds of each.

HUNT SEAT The category in which English riders compete either over a series of jumps or in a general equitation class.

REINING In this event, Western riders perform an assigned pattern from memory, demonstrating a variety of stops, turns and figures at various speeds. The emphasis is on precision and technical application of the rider’s ability to handle unfamiliar horses.

AAUBURNUBURN 31 EQUESTRIAN CENTER

The Auburn Equestrian Center, home of the 2006 and 2008 Var- sity Equestrian National Champions, is a part of the Department of Animals Sciences in the College of Agriculture. The facility is located on the edge of campus across from Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine on Wire Road, making it easily accessible to Auburn student-athletes, faculty and staff. Housed on these 65 acres are 30 team horses along with two side- by-side arenas for the equestrian team practices and meets. This allows both the Western and Hunt Seat to ride simultaneously without interference. There are also two tack rooms for both Western and Hunt Seat teams along with a team locker room.

AUBURN EQUESTRIAN LOOKS TO THE FUTURE Auburn Equestrian is pleased to announce that ground breaking for the new Center for Equine Education, Research and Performance will begin this year. The Education, Research and Performance Complex will be located in the same vicinity as the current Equestrian Center. The site will be composed of approximately one hundred acres of pasture, classroom and research labo- ratories, performance arenas, barns and parking. This will be one of the most advanced facilities in the country to promote equine science and equestrian competition. This Center will be unique in combining the College of Agricul- ture, Veterinary Medicine and the Athletics Department in one central location. The new facility will incorporate teaching, research and athletics for collabora- tion in the study and performance of human and equine athletes. This facility will be the only one in the country to offer these three components together.

COMPETITION The Auburn equestrian team will compete in an indoor arena with a 4,000 seat capacity. There will also be a covered and outdoor arena for team use. This new facility will be one of the country’s finest collegiate performance arenas. The observation area will host VIP guests during competitions and special events. The covered and outdoor arenas will allow space for team practice, instruction and competition.

The Sports Medicine Program was established in 1991, with faculty from throughout AU’s College of Veterinary Medicine involved in studying injuries, diseases, nutritional factors and physiologic functions of dogs and horses involved in field sports and working endeavors. Currently the Veterinarian and the staff at Auburn Dr. Robert L. University’s Sports Medicine Program act as a team to address the health and performance of canine and equine athletes. Gillette The overall goals of the program relate to optimizing perfor- mance, minimizing the risk of injury or metabolic damage and defining the best treatment and therapy protocols as they Director correlate to the special needs of these performance animals. They want to improve the health, well-being and functional longevity of the athletic and and disseminate information on clinical and research findings to those involved with dogs and horses.

Equine Performance Testing The Auburn University Veterinary Sports Medicine Program has explored new technologies to analyze perfor- mance in athletic and working horses. These technologies Craig Angle enable the monitoring of horses while they are working in their environment and with all the stimuli of that environment. Horses can be evaluated in a natural non-laboratory setting. Research For example, performance evaluations may include cardiac Associate measurements, blood samples, velocity, distance traveled by horses and high speed motion analysis of the horse.

Motion Analysis The AUVSMP has the ability to use high speed video cameras to analyze almost any movement or component of movement that a horse executes during a sports skill. Move- ments can either be analyzed via slow motion analysis or movements can be analyzed by quantification of kinematic measurements. They can quantify movement by quantified measurements of motion. This allows assessment of body Sherry Johnston movement to help diagnose an injury, reveal a possible risk of injury or help refine the movement of a sports skill. Program A Collaborative Effort Technician Dr. Robert Gillette and Greg Williams (Head Coach of the AU Equestrian Team) have started a research initiative for the advancement of equine sports medicine. Dr. Gillette and Coach Williams are heading up a research team that will study different issues in equine sports medicine. Areas of interest are biomechanics, exercise physiology, nutrition, athletic performance and general heard health. Currently, the research team is compiling ideas, preparing pilot studies and searching for research funding. The goal of the research will be to study areas of equine sports medicine that have not Lauren Jernigan been studied before and disseminate that information to the equine community for the betterment of the equine athletes. A second goal of the AUVSMP-Equestrian Team relationship Program will be to expose veterinary students to equine athletes. The AUVSMP Student Chapter will also be participating in certain Technician research projects and general sports medicine management of the equine athletes. Lastly, the AUVSMP is going to provide biomechanical sports skill analysis for both the equine athletes and the riders. This technical analysis will aid the coaching staff in teaching, modifying and enhancing rider technique. 30
