A GUIDE TO MORMON MANUSCRIPTS AT THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY 3 INTRODUCTION Since its establishment in 1919, the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens has achieved international renown for the magnificence of its gardens and of its public exhibits. Although less well known to the public at large, the diverse resources of the Library’s research collections have achieved an equal fame since that time among the world-wide community of scholars who study the many facets of Anglo-American civilization. Building upon the multitude of books and manuscripts gathered by the Library’s founder, southern California land and transportation magnate Henry E. Huntington, subsequent generations of librarians have assembled a collection of remarkable depth and breadth in such fields as the Anglo-American literary world of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the founding of the American republic, the history of science and technology and the exploration, and the settlement and development of the North American West. Huntington’s penchant for purchasing large collections sometimes led, almost by chance, to the development of specialized collecting areas that he had not previously cultivated, such as the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its adherents, both prominent and humble. The development of the Huntington’s Mormon collections began with the purchase of a first and second edition of the Book of Mormon, which were acquired with the E. Dwight Church and Augustin MacDonald collections in 1911 and 1916. This was followed by the additions of a variety of other printed texts related to Mormon history, which Huntington continued to purchase until his death in 1927. The assembly of these printed texts and foray into collecting Mormon manuscript material were furthered by Huntington librarian Leslie E. Bliss in the 1920s, culminating with the acquisition of the John D. Lee diaries in 1929. In 1934 the Huntington acquired the Jacob Smith Boreman Papers - which focus on the two trials of John D. Lee – and, under the Works Progress Administration in 1942, began collecting facsimile diaries and reminiscences by Mormon pioneers. These early acquisitions were extraordinarily enhanced beginning in 1944, when Huntington Library research associate Robert Glass Cleland helped secure a Rockefeller Foundation grant to fund the collecting of manuscripts related to southwestern American history. To further this goal, the library enlisted Mormon historian Juanita Brooks to comb the Great Basin area for potential acquisitions, resulting in the addition of a wide variety of original manuscripts and facsimile reproductions to the rapidly expanding Mormon collections. This collecting pace continued unabated through the 1950s and into the 1960s, and the majority of the Huntington’s Mormon manuscripts were acquired during this time. In addition to these individual items, the Library acquired several major collections, including the papers of Fred Lockley in 1959, the papers of Kimball Young in 1965, and the Lewis Crum Bidamon Papers in 1966. The work of Bliss, Cleland, Brooks, and their successors expanded the Library’s holdings from a modest assortment of texts and manuscripts to one of the most comprehensive Mormon history collections outside of Utah. The Huntington’s Mormon holdings now constitute thousands of pieces encompassing every aspect of Mormon history, beginning with the founding of the Church and continuing through the exoduses from Nauvoo and Kirtland, the migration along pioneer trails to Zion, and the settlement of the inter-mountain west. Some of these manuscripts follow Mormon missionaries as far afield A GUIDE TO MORMON MANUSCRIPTS AT THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY 4 as Hawaii, Scandinavia, and China, while others stay closer to home, recording the spiritual lives of the Saints and the domestic trials and triumphs of the men and women of the Church. Highlights of early Church history records include Oliver Cowdery’s 1834-1838 letterbook, the autobiography of Wandle Mace, and the memoir of Reed Peck (1839), as well as a variety of original letters by Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. Among the dozens of diaries and memoirs covering the western migration are those of Henry William Bigler, Edwin Harley, and Edwin Smout. Conflict between Mormons and Gentiles is recorded in, among others, the transcripts of the John D. Lee trials included in the Jacob Boreman Papers, the papers of U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers John Williams Gunnison and Edward G. Beckwith, and a journal of Henry Ballard, which recalls his experiences in the Utah War. Women’s voices are heard through the diaries of Eliza Roxcy Snow, Mary Minerva Dart Judd, Lucy Mack Smith, and Lucy Hannah Flake; in autobiographies and memoirs by Sophronia Moore Martin, Mary Ann Stearns Winters, and Sarah Studevant Leavitt; in the poetry of Ellis Reynolds Shipp; in the letters of Maria Bidgood Jarman Ford Barnes, who fled an abusive, polygamous marriage; and from a multitude of other journals, reminiscences, and letters. Polygamy is examined in the notes for Kimball Young’s Isn’t One Wife Enough? and Mary Bennion Powell’s How I Was Affected by Polygamy, among others. Missionary work is recorded in a wide range of memoirs and diaries, including the papers of Ira Hinckley (New Zealand), the daybook of Peter Hansen (Scandinavia), Albert Jarman’s correspondence in the Jarman Family Papers (England), and in the facsimile diaries of Harvey H. Cluff (Hawaii, Great Britain), John Stillman Woodbury (Hawaii), and Hosea Stout (China). Other manuscripts trace the stories of Mormon immigrants from England (William Marsden, James Farmer, Benjamin Platt), Scotland (William Richardson), Denmark (John Nielsen), Sweden (Helena Rosbery), Switzerland (Jean Frederic Loba), and Canada (Jesse W. Crosby), while still others describe topics as diverse as interactions between Mormons and Native Americans (James Holt, Ruby Lamont, George Washington Bean), the running of United Order settlements (United Order of Oak City, United Order of Panguitch), and views on healing and medicine (Elias Hicks Blackburn, Priddy Meeks). The collections are rounded out by a variety of 20th century biographies, essays, and theses discussing and debating Mormon historical and theological topics. Users interested in Mormon manuscript collections in general may also wish to consult the Guide to Mormon Autobiographies and Diaries by Davis Bitton (Brigham Young University Press, 1977). Potential users of the Huntington’s historical manuscript collections should also be aware of its 1978 publication, Guide to American Historical Manuscripts at the Huntington Library. Although many collections acquired since its date of issue are not listed in the volume, it does provide concise descriptions for many of the Huntington’s hundreds of collections within the broad field of American history. A GUIDE TO MORMON MANUSCRIPTS AT THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY 5 OVERVIEW OF MORMON MANUSCRIPTS The majority of Mormon manuscripts at the Huntington were acquired individually and do not belong to larger collections. Therefore, these items have been grouped together to form a single, artificial (not sharing the same provenance or function) collection known as the Mormon File. The Mormon File consists primarily of individual manuscripts such as letters, diaries, autobiographies, and reminiscences. Individual

    Martha Hughes Cannon: An Example of a New Womanhood in Utah Martha Hughes Cannon, a nineteenth-century intellectual and activist, was described by a Chicago newspaper as "the brightest exponent of the women's cause in the United States."1 Cannon is most well known for being the first female state senator in the US. She ran as a Democrat and was elected on November 3, 1896. Cannon's additional claim to fame is that she defeated her husband, who ran as a Republican, by nearly 3,000 votes. A local paper commented on the husband's loss by saying, ``Mrs. Mattie Hughes Cannon, his wife, is the better man of the two. Send Mrs. Cannon to the State Senate and let Mr. Cannon, as a Republican, remain at home to manage home industry.''2 Martha didn't intend for her victory to overshadow her husband--she was simply trying to gain the power to enact the health reform legislation that she saw as necessary for the health of under-represented Utahns, such as women, children and the disabled. Despite Cannon's fame as a Utah Senator, she had many achievements under her belt before she ran for public office. At age nineteen she decided she wanted to be a doctor, and soon graduated from the University of Deseret with a degree in chemistry. Within five more years she completed her medical degree at the University of Michigan, went on to earn a B.S. from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Pharmacy and a bachelors of oratory degree from the National School of Elocution and Oratory.

Baugh The Elders’ Journal of July 1838, published in Far West, Missouri, includ- ed a series of twenty questions related to Mormonism. The answers to the questions bear the editorial pen of Joseph Smith. Question number sixteen posed the following query: “If the Mormon doctrine is true, what has become of all those who have died since the days of the apostles?” The Prophet answered, “All those who have not had an opportunity of hearing the gospel, and being administered to by an inspired man in the flesh, must have it hereafter before they can be finally judged.”1 The Prophet’s thought is clear—the dead must have someone in mortality administer the saving ordinances for them to be saved in the kingdom of God. Significantly, the answer given by the Prophet marks his first known statement concerning the doctrine of vicari- ous work for the dead. However, it was not until more than two years later that the principle was put into practice.2 On 15 August 1840, Joseph Smith preached the funeral sermon of Seymour Brunson during which time he declared for the first time the doc- trine of baptism for the dead.3 Unfortunately, there are no contemporary accounts of the Prophet’s discourse. However, Simon Baker was present at the funeral services and later stated that during the meeting the Prophet read extensively from 1 Corinthians 15, then noted a particular widow in the congregation whose son had died without baptism.

This, the single most comprehensive essay on the history and theory of Mormon literature, first appeared in 1982 and has been republished and expanded several times in keeping up with developments in Mormon letters and Eugene England’s own thinking.     A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley The settlement of Beaver County began in February 1856 when fifteen families from Parowan moved by wagon thirty miles north to Beaver Valley. The county was created by the Utah legislature on 31 January 1856, a week before the Parowan group set out to make their new home. However, centuries before, prehistoric peoples lived in the area, obtaining obsidian for arrow and spear points from the Mineral Mountains. Later, the area became home to Paiute Indians. Franciscan Friars Dominguez and Escalante passed through the area in October 1776. The Mormon settlement of Beaver devel­ oped at the foot of the Tushar Mountains. In 1859 the community of Minersville was es­ tablished, and residents farmed, raised live­ stock, and mined the lead deposits there. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century the Mineral Mountains and other locations in the county saw extensive mining develop­ ment, particularly in the towns of Frisco and Newhouse. Mining activities were given a boost with the completion of the Utah South­ ern Railroad to Milford in 1880.     Settling Tooele The following excerpts on the settling of Tooele are taken from Cyrus Tolman: Father, Frontiersman, Pioneer by Loraine Tolman Pace, Second Edition, 2006, pages 22-27: The Indian version for the naming of Tooele “is that the county took its name from an Indian chief named Tuilla, who lived in the valley years before the advent of the Mormons. Captain Ferguson, an Indian born in 1865, and well-educated as well as having served in the U. S. Army, said he had lived among the Indians of Tooele County many times, and heard the story repeated many times. Elizabeth R. Nelson, born in Tooele in 1853, also verifies this version, by asserting that as a girl in 1867, she heard her father, John Rowberry, tell of an Indian chief, Tuilla, for whom the valley was named. This version is also probable inasmuch as Howard Stansbury’s (government surveyor) map of this region in 1849 and 1850, denotes the valley as ‘Tuilla,’ and the settlement itself as ‘Tooele.’” (History of Tooele County, p. 22.) Indians, wolves and rattlesnakes were plentiful in the Tooele Valley and added to the hardships and terror of the pioneer families. Andrew Jenson, writing of the early days in the Salt Lake Valley for the Deseret News said, “Tooele Valley was named after the tule (pronounced tooly), a Mexican Indian name for a variety of bullrush abundant in that locality.     JOHN WILLIAMS GUNNISON John W. Gunnison was born in Goshen, New Hampshire in 1812; he graduated from West Point in 1837, second in his class of fifty cadets. After he had served one year in the Florida campaign against the Seminole Indians, his health led him to ask for a reassignment to the Corps of Topographical Engineers, where he spent the rest of his military career. But his new appointment did not take him out of the Florida swamps for another year; in 1839 he helped to build a road in Florida until his superiors were forced to send him to Saratoga Springs in order that he could recover his health. He then finished his southern tour of duty in supervising the construction of a canal in Georgia. While there, he married Martha A. Delony on 15 April 1841. For the next eight years, 1841 to 1849, he was engaged in survey work in the Great Lakes region. He helped plot the boundary between Wisconsin and Michigan, the western coast of Lake Michigan, the coasts of Lake Erie, and the marshy areas of northern Ohio. He was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant on 9 May 1846 but did not serve in the Mexican War, continuing with his duties as an engineer in the Great Lakes area. In the spring of 1849 he was assigned as second in command of the Howard Stansbury Expedition to explore and survey the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. Pratt Much has been written about the Mormon pioneer company that went to the Great Basin in 1847. Little has been written about the large immi- gration group that followed, organized principally by Parley P. Pratt. Returning from England in April 1847, Apostle Pratt, together with John Taylor and Orson Hyde, successfully closed the Joint Stock Company, an ill-fated English trading company started by Reuben Hedlock, Thomas Ward, and Wilford Woodruff.1 Arriving in Winter Quarters just when Brigham Young and the pioneers were leaving for the West, Parley, and to a lesser extent John Taylor, reorganized and enlarged the companies for emigration west, negotiated with the Omaha and Otoe Indians and the U.S. government Indian agents to protect the Mormons’ cattle from Indian attack, and tried to make Winter Quarters more economically efficient. They also dealt with difficult problems concerning plural marriage and wrestled with the question of leadership and authority in the absence of Brigham Young. The Indian Problem When Parley arrived at Winter Quarters on 8 April 1847, he found the Mormons in conflict with the Omaha and Otoe Indians and the Indian agents. The Mormons had received permission from the government to stay on Potawatomi lands on the east side of the Missouri River but had failed to gain government permission to stay on Omaha lands on the west side.2 The Mormons had entered into agreements with the Indians them- selves to haul corn to the Indians and to provide protection in exchange for the use of their land.

    Missionary Activities in New England in the Early 1830s Craig K. Manscill Religion played a very important role in early American history. It was largely for religious purposes that America was founded. Many people from the New England area were descendants of deeply religious progenitors and played important roles in the found- ing of America. During the nineteenth century, the New England states had been trodden and combed for converts by various denominations. Methodist circuit riders, Presbyterian preachers, Baptist revivalists, and Reformed Baptist ministers competed for the souls of men and women—all reaping a harvest for their respective religions. 1 What New England had not heard, up to this time, was the message of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ from the Mormons. The message centered in the fact that the new and ever - lasting covenant had been reestablished and was patterned after the teachings of Jesus Christ’s meridian Church. In order for Mormonism to flourish and succeed, it had to meet certain conditions. It had to offer something new, different, and challenging and yet have a familiar gospel message. This somewhat-familiar gospel message presented new and challenging doctrine. The New England states of the early 1830s became the focus of a good deal of the early missionary labors. Because of New Englanders ’ religious background and zeal for freedom, the message of Mormon- ism flourished, and many of them became converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From their ranks came a great number of the early leaders of the Church, and they often gave much-needed financial assistance to the young and growing organi - zation.
