ExEcuTivE SuMMARy The Mohawk Valley Battlefield Ethnography Project was designed to document the relationships between contemporary Indian peoples and the events that occurred in central New York during the mid to late eighteenth century. The particular focus was Fort Stanwix, located near the Oneida Carry, which linked the Mohawk and St. Lawrence Rivers via Wood Creek, and the Oriskany Battlefield. Because of its strategic location, Fort Stanwix was the site of several critical treaties between the British and the Iroquois and, following the American Revolution, between the latter and the United States. This region was the homeland of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy whose neutrality or military support was desired by both the British and the rebels during the Revolution. The Battle of Oriskany, 6 August 1777, occurred as the Tryon County militia, aided by Oneida warriors, was marching to relieve the British siege of Ft. -

The highlights of the meeting included a presentation by Florida DAR State Lineage Research Chairman, Dr. Debbie Duay on various hereditary societies that SAR members might be eligible to join, as well as a celebration of Compatriot George Dennis’ 98 th birthday complete with cake and a champagne toast. Town History from Child’s Gazetteer (1890) for the Town of Cape Vincent (From http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~twigs2000/cv.html) CAPE VINCENT was formed from Lyme, April 10, 1849, and named in honor of Vincent Le Ray, son of James D. Le Ray de Chaumont, the early proprietor. It is the northwest corner town of the county, and embraces Carleton, Grenadier, and Fox islands. It is bounded on the west and northwest by the St. Lawrence River, on the northeast by Clayton, and on the southwest by Lyme. The surface of the town is level, or slightly undulating, and the soil is a clayey loam. Kent’s Creek, the principal stream, rises in the eastern part of the town and, flowing in a southwesterly direction, empties into the St. Lawrence River. There are a number of sulphur springs in the town. The first town meeting was held at the hotel of Jacob Beringer, May 15, 1849, at which the following officers were elected: Frederick A. Folger, supervisor; John W. Little, town clerk; W. H. Webb, superintendent of schools; Jacob Beringer, Augustus Awberton, and Barney W. Payne, justices of the peace; E. Clement, collector; John H. Lawton and Adam A. Gray, assessors, Buel Fuller, commissioner of highways; Francis A. Cross, overseer of the poor. In 1880 Cape Vincent had a population of 3,143. The town is situated in the third school district of Jefferson County, and in 1889 had 16 school districts, in which 20 teachers were employed 28 weeks or more. There were 726 scholars attending school, while the aggregate days attendance during the year was 64,310. -

ABSTRACT Nadine Kopp. The Influence of the War of 1812 on Great Lakes Shipbuilding. (Under the Direction of Dr. Bradley Rodgers) Department of History, January 2012. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether the War of 1812 influenced ship construction techniques on the Great Lakes. During the War of 1812, much of the fighting in the North American theater of war primarily took place along the Niagara frontier and later along the St. Lawrence River. From the outset, both the Americans and British realized that gaining the upper hand in the conflict depended upon control of the Great Lakes. Critical to achieving the advantage was the development of a significant and powerful inland navy, which led to a shipbuilding race on both shores. The primary question raised surrounding Great Lakes ship construction in the early nineteenth century is whether or not this large scale event, the War of 1812, permanently influenced the way in which ships were constructed once the war was over. To answer this question, this study examines diagnostic attributes of archaeologically examined wrecks from the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain from before, during and after the War of 1812 to find similarities and difference in their design and construction The three time periods have been defined as the period before the War of 1812, from the French and Indian War (1754 to 1763), when British sailing ships first appeared on the Great Lakes, up to 1811; the period of the War of 1812 itself (1812-1814); and the period after the war leading up to the opening of the Welland Canal (1829) and the widespread use of steam engines on the Great Lakes (1830s-1840s). -

Readings from the Archives [These were the documents read out at the Land Symposium event on 26 October 2013 by Amanda Hill. They are all held at Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and photocopies of them are available in the Deseronto Archives.] As archivists we know that historical records may not always tell us absolute truths, but they can give us insights into people’s views on the world and on each other which can be informative. Today I want to read you some extracts from the interactions between the Government and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte to illustrate the nature of that relationship and how it changed over time. This is a relationship that goes back a long way, but I’m focussing on the fifty years after the American Revolution, when some of the Mohawk people settled in this part of Ontario, having lost their lands in the Mohawk Valley. I’ll start with a literal translation of extracts from a speech by one of the Mohawk leaders, Captain Joseph Brant which he made to Lieutenant Governor Frederick Haldimand on 27 May 1783 “Brother – you have books and records of our mutual treaties and engagements which will confirm the truth of what I have been telling and as we are unacquainted with the art of writing we keep it fresh in our memory by belts of wampum deposited in our Council House at Onondaga “…when a few years after the conquest of Canada your people in this country thought themselves confined on account of their numbers, with regard to the scarcity of land, we were applied to for giving up some of ours, and fix a line or mark between them and us. -

Located in the southeastern and eastern quadrant of Lake Ontario, this area and its tributaries provided food and transportation trade routes for indigenous peoples and early European explorers, such as Samuel de Champlain. During the colonial period, it was a strategic theater of conflict among European powers and the young American republic. Military actions involving naval and land forces occurred at Sodus, Oswego, Big Sandy Creek, and Sackets Harbor during the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
