This study examined the seasonal pattern of leaf tie construction and occupancy by caterpillars associated with white oak, Quercus alba, in Missouri. Thirty white oak trees were monitored over die course of a season, recording the phenology of leaf tie construction, occupancy, and abandonment by 14 different species of leaf-tying caterpillars. Larvae of Pseudotelphusa sp. (Gelechiidae) created most of the initial leaf ties, many of which were secondarily occupied by a variety of other leaf tiers. In addition, non-tying caterpillar species from a variety of families were common secondary occupants. As many as 6 different species and 15 different individual larvae were found occupying a single leaf tie over the course of the season. In selecting pre-existing leaf ties for colonization sites, die leaf tiers did not discriminate between ties of different ages. On average, one-third of the leaves on a branch were incorporated into a leaf tie at some time during the season. Despite their abundance, leaf ties in this system appear to be a limiting resource. This FH is consi- dered an adaptation to escape from visually oriented predators. A frequent component of the FH are the tails that presumably re- semble the antennae, and the typical hind wings back-and-forth movement along the sagittal plane (HWM) performed while perching apparently move the tails in a way that mimics antennal movement. By exposing 33 individuals from 18 species of Ly- caenidae to a stuffed insectivorous bird, we tested two alternative hypotheses regarding HWM. The first hypothesis proposes that, when the butterfly is observed at close range, the HWM distorts the shape of the false head thus reducing its deceiving effect and, therefore, selection will favor butterflies that stop moving their wings when a predator is close by; the second hypothesis says that an increase in the frequency of HWM improves its deflective effect when the butterfly confronts a predator at close range.

Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae.

The paper presents the research on Lepidoptera in Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich Landscape Park between 1982 and 2019. The material was collected at nine selected sites, mainly in various forest environments. Overall, 1162 species in 66 families were recorded and listed, including 26 species new to the Province of Silesia. WSTĘP Park Krajobrazowy Cysterskie Kompozycje Krajobrazowe Rud Wielkich (PK CKKRW) położony jest w południowo-zachodniej części województwa śląskiego i zajmuje wschodnią część Kotliny Raciborskiej oraz północne fragmenty Płaskowyżu Rybnickiego. Powstał na mocy Rozporządzenia Wojewody Katowickiego Nr 181/93 z dnia 23 listopada 1993 roku. Powierzchnia Parku wynosi 493,87 km², a strefa ochronna to obszar 140,10 km². Dominują tu drzewostany sosnowe, rosnące na siedliskach borowych, wykształconych na glebach bielicowych, a także wprowadzone sztucznie na siedliska żyznych lasów liściastych. Najbogatszym przyrodniczo terenem w obrębie Parku jest kompleks leśno-stawowy Łężczok w okolicach Raciborza, będący jedynym rezerwatem w granicach Parku. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. CropLife represents companies that develop, manufacture, and distribute virtually all ofthe crop protection, pest management, and biotechnology products used by American farmers. Because these products are critical technologies for American agriculture, CropLife's members have a substantial interest in the issues presented in the 90-day finding on a petition to list as threatened the Monarch butterfly (Dana us plexippus p/exippus) made available to the publicI by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ("FWS") on December 31, 2014 pursuant to the Endangered Species Act ("ESA,,). 2 As these initial comments indicate, our organization and its members believe that the proposed listing of the Monarch butterfly under the ESA is not warranted. Estimates for Monarch populations in North America have been available for only about two decades.
