Day by Day Itinerary DAY 1 Fly to Swedish Lapland & Transfer to Abisko - The Aurora Capital

page 1/14 Fly to in Swedish Lapland where Petri Tuominen or one of the Abisko guides will meet and transfer you to Abisko Mountain Lodge, your base for the next 3 nights. We are the only Tour Operator in Kiruna to have our own dedicated guide and transfer service.

After check at Abisko Mountain Lodge kit yourselves out with the complimentary arctic clothing we provide. Mina and Dick Johansson, your hosts, run a really friendly and warming lodge, with a restaurant serving excellent meals using local ingredients.

Abisko Mountain Lodge offers genuine accommodation in a traditional mountain hotel setting. The service is personal and the cuisine is centred on local ingredients and is of an exceptional standard!

The 16 twin rooms in the low red ‘Swedish style house’ are all en-suite. Although basic in the Scandinavian style they are warm and cosy. There are no televisions in the rooms as time is spent meeting fellow travelers around the bar or in the relaxing lounge area.

There are 4 deluxe rooms in a separate Annexe which come highly recommended and are for the sole use of Weekend a la Carte’s clients.

This evening enjoy the fantastic cuisine at Mountain Lodge as you partake in their traditional Lappish menu which includes , Arctic Char and Cloudberries – 3 of the unique ingredients to the area. The only thing that can interrupt your evening is the Aurora Call.

Abisko Mountain Lodge is in a fantastic location for northern lights viewing so if they are out you may be tempted to step out the door and gaze skywards!

2015 saw the addition of 4 superior rooms at the Lodge. Housed in a separate annexe across the courtyard these rooms add additional comfort and space. All are en suite and are for exclusive use by our clients.

DAY 2 Day Exploring Abisko National Park or Optional Activities.

page 2/14 Enjoy breakfast in the lodge from the extensive buffet comprising both hot and cold choices, baked breads, select teas and coffee and fruit juices.

You can decide to explore Abisko National Park which is sandwiched between picturesque mountains and Lake Tornetrask one of Sweden’s largest lakes which freezes during winter. The team at Abisko Mountain Lodge will provide information on trails you can explore. Alternatively from mid February onwards you can take the chairlift up Mt. Nujola to view the spectacular landscapes from 300 meters up!

For those of you wishing to add in more excitement we offer a range of added optional extras. A snowmobile or sled dog trip comes highly recommended.

This evening enjoy the fantastic cuisine at Mountain Lodge. The only thing that can interrupt your evening is the Aurora Call.

Abisko Mountain Lodge is in a fantastic location for northern lights viewing so if they are out you may be tempted to step out the door and gaze skywards! There are a couple of viewing locations a short walk from the lodge.

Alternatively we can offer you some very special evening tours. Chose between a visit to the word renowned Aurora Sky Station or a photo evening with Chad Blakley or one of his team capturing the northern lights on film in the picturesque Abisko National Park.

Snowmobiling Options in Abisko National Park

Abisko National Park surrounds Abisko Mountain Lodge so you don’t have to go far to get some awe inspiring views of the frozen lake and mountains. Snowmobiling is a great way of getting deeper into Abisko National Park to appreciate the expanse and the beauty of the surrounding area. The wonderful Tornetrask glacial formation is a beacon rising out of the white desert!

Your trip includes a 2 hour shared snowmobile experience. We offer more options:

Northern Lights Wilderness Photography Evening

page 3/14 Spend the evening with one of the “Lights Over Lapland” photographers for an opportunity to see and photograph the aurora borealis in the wilderness of Abisko National Park. Abisko sits in a low precipitation zone and thus has many more clear nights than almost anywehere else in the region which is why the Aurora are seen so frequently from here. There is virtually no light pollution either.

This tour which is used extensively by our guests at Abisko Mountain Lodge involves a short snowmobile ride in a sled to the wilderness Yurt, your base for the evening.

You will be provided with a high quality camera & lens and teach you the skills that you will need to find and photograph the magical aurora Borealis. Even if you have never used a camera before you have an extremely high chance of going home with some beautiful aurora photographs and memories that will last a lifetime!

Price Per Person: £145

Includes: Camera, tripod, warm drinks, guiding services, 3-4 hours searching for and photographing the aurora in Abisko National Park. You need to take SD card with you.

Ice Climbing on Frozen Waterfall

The Abisko Canyon is in the National Park, close to the lodge and is formed by the frozen river entering Lake Tornetrask. Have fun spending a couple of hours under expert guidance ice climbing the frozen waterfall.The sense of achievement is exhilarating and we have both 17 and 70 year olds do it over the years!

Price: £95 per person:- half day with Guiding and equipment provided

Ice Fishing on Lake Tornetrask

Lake Tornetrask is a short walk away from Abisko Mountain Lodge and besides being a beautiful setting is an excellent place to try your luck at Ice Fishing. Away from it all surrounded by mountains and beautiful vista nothing could be better! The Lake has both Arctic Char, Grayling and Trout but in Winter you are most likely to catch Char – the King of Arctic Fish! Perhaps the chefs back at the hotel can cook you up a feast with your catch!

Price Per Person: £85 – half day including guide and equipment

page 4/14 DAY 3 Train Trip to Norwegian Fjords or Select an Optional Experience.

Enjoy breakfast before taking the train from the station near the Lodge and follow the famous iron ore railroad with beautiful mountain vistas, frozen waterfalls and stunning Arctic valleys. Once you cross into enjoy the magnificent views and try to take photos before continuing up and over Björnfjell – a stunning Norwegian mountain dotted with small grass roofed cottages. Meander down the mountain, where small birch trees give way to large evergreens and dramatic mountains fall steeply down into the Norwegian Fjord.

Once in Narvik you will have around 3 hours to explore town before the return trip. You have the opportunity to ascend to the observation deck of the Scandic Hotel, take the cable car for views over the fjords, do some souvenir shopping or visit the newly built Peace Museum. This state of the art facility offers a glimpse of what life looked like in these majestic Fjords during the Second World War Nazi occupation. (please note this train trip can be cancelled at short notice if the weather prevents trains passing the high plateau between Sweden and Norway)

Alternatively chose between our selection of daytime activities which range from the more relaxed to the more adventurous. For example you could test yourself on an ice climbing introduction in the Abisko Canyon on a frozen waterfall or simply sit on a sleigh with a musher driving you through some pristine wilderness.

Lunch at the lodge is included.

This evening you have a last chance to sample the fine cuisine at the lodge or venture out on a northern lights hunt if you wish.

Dog sledding in Abisko National Park

page 5/14 This is probably our most popular day time activity and one that brings you close to nature in a very special way.

We have two options for this this half day experience.

Option 1 is to journey Alaskan Trapper style which allows you to experience the sensation of being pulled through the snow by your enthusiastic sled dogs, admiring the beautiful landscape whilst your guide does all the work! Sitting comfortably on a large sled, not dissimilar to the old mail sleds used in Alaska over 100 years ago, learn to understand why dog is man’s best friend and appreciate the power and endurance these magnificent animals can generate in the tough Arctic climate.

Price: £175 per person

Option 2 is to take charge of your own sled for the trip (shared with your partner) and feel the sensation of driving 6 enthusiastic huskies through pristine snow and wilderness

Night Visit or Exclusive Dinner at the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko

page 6/14 This evening why not visit the celebrated Aurora Sky Station in Abisko for either a Night Visit or if celebrating a special occasion the Exclusive Dinner.

Night Visit

After dinner at the lodge transfer by minibus to the sky station at around 8.30. Venture up on the chairlift for a 3 hour visit. Facing north and with a spectacular elevation the auroras are spectacular from here if they are out and playing for the evening.

Exclusive Dinner

Rather than having dinner at the Lodge experience the gourmet dinner at the iconic Aurora Sky Station, allowing you an extra 3 hours in the Sky Station.

Take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps and Tornetrask. Enjoy a delicious three course meal at the sky station prepared using the best local ingredients.

Your chances of seeing the aurora are good. Abisko is blessed with many long, dark nights. In addition, there is minimal artificial light. Abisko is situated 250km north of the and has the most cloud-free sky in Sweden.

Introduction to The Life of the Sami

Take a day trip to the Sámi village of Rávttas, 45 minutes east of Abisko and experience a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the reindeer people. This exclusive, once in a lifetime opportunity allows you to experience the amazing lifestyle of the Sámi people and to get up close and personal with Lapland’s most iconic creature – the reindeer.

During this exciting adventure you will have an opportunity to feed the reindeer and absorb the magical relationship between the Sámi and their most cherished resource.

During your visit to Rávttas you will also have an opportunity to enjoy a short ride on a traditional sled behind a reindeer just as the Sámi people have done for hundreds of years. After your ride you will have a chance to learn how to identify different reindeer in the herd based on personal characteristics and behaviour.

All of this excitement will most certainly make you hungry – your guide will lead you to one of our traditional Sámi lavvus (teepee) where you will be served a fresh and delicious meal around an open fire.

Enjoy lunch with smoked meats (suovas) and bread (gahkku) aound the open fire in a Sami tepee (lavvu) while Håkan imparts the history and culture of the Sami people.

This glimpse into traditional Sámi life will be one of the highlights of your visit!

Visit Original Ice Hotel

The Ice Hotel now in its 30th edition made this corner of Swedish Lapland a tourist magnet. It has been the subject of a number of documentaries over the years and still attracts plaudits for its amazing design.

There are two hotels, the permanent ICEHOTEL 365 which has a unique cooling system and is open all year round and the structure which is built each year and is created by Ice Artists from around the world who submit their entries for the priviledge of creating one of the unique Art Suites.

The hotel is created with imagination and hard work, only to melt away under the unforgiving rays of the sun come springtime. All that remains are our impressions, our memories – and photographs. Using only frozen water from the River which runs alongside the hotel.

Take a drink in the ICEBAR, view the chapel or do a bit of shopping in the excellent boutique. You will have 2 hours to explore before you are dropped off at the airport.

Night in World Famous Ice Hotel

The hotel has two editions:

Permanent ICEHOTEL 365. (open all year)

This revolutionary design has allowed visitors from around the world to experience the ICEHOTEL all year round. Through a unique cooling system the designers have built all the features of the original icehotel into this amazing structure. Art suites and deluxe art suites are housed in 365

Temporary ICEHOTEL (open Mid December – End March)

This hotel is rebuilt from blocks of ice harvested from the Torne river. As the temperature in Jukkasjärvi drops below zero Ice Artists arrive from the world over to build this magnificent creation. They build the 4 levels of rooms, the ice chapel and ice bar. Their art is created with imagination and hard work, only to melt away under the unforgiving rays of the sun come spring.

We offer all categories of room from cabins to Art Suites and the new en suite deluxe art suites in ICEHOTEL 365.

We will make a reservation in the restaurant for you so you can experience some of the region’s best cuisine (a la carte menu paid for locally)

Extension to See Stockholm Scandinavia's Capital City

page 10/14 Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and always rates in the top 10 most desirable cities in the world to live in. It is also the perfect place to ‘top or tail’ your break to see the northern lights.

The old town in Stockholm is very picturesque and compact and can be done in a full day. Your time will be spent exploring some fascinating landmarks. The VASA museum is world class, the Nobel museum of local interest and for ABBA fans ABBA interactive museum.You will stay in the Rival Hotel owned by Benny Anderson of ABBA fame. The hotel is an excellent 4* hotel in a quiet square but within walking distance of the old town.

We make it easy by including private return airport transfers in the package!

We will manage this bolt on to your itinerary so that it logistically ties in with what you are doing in Abisko.

DAY 1

Transfer down to Narvik in Norway following the iron ore railway, an historic route with great scenery. In Narvik check into the striking Scandic Hotel. Visit the war museum this afternoon which documents the German Occupation of the WW2. Tonight enjoy dinner at the Hotel before pick up for a night of Northern Lights hunting in the spectacular Mountains behind Narvik with a local Sami Guide

DAY 2

Catch the bus via the Polar Park to Tromso. The Polar Park is home to many of the indigenous wildlife of the region. Wolves, bears, and are just a few. On arrival in Tromso check into your hotel the Clarion Edge, your base for the next 2 nights. Tonight enjoy dinner at the hotel and a wonder around the town.

DAY 3

Explore Tromso, ‘Paris of the North’. There is plenty to see including the Polar Museum, Mack Brewery and the Arctic Cathedral. This evening enjoy a northern lights hunt on the water as you enjoy a luxury Catamaran cruise around the fjords near Tromso.

DAY 4

At Leisure until your flybus transfer to the airport for your flight home.

The service is personal and the cuisine is centred on raw ingredients. It is accredited by the Sapmi Slow Food movement, an award which took 4 years to achieve. Chefs are dedicated slow-food addicts and produce wonderful nightly meals!

The 16 standard rooms in the low red 'Swedish style house' are all en-suite. Although basic they are warm and cosy. There are no televisions in the rooms as time is spent meeting guests around the bar or in the wonderful lounge area.

Additionally there are 4 new superior rooms added in early 2015. These four rooms are in a separate annexe and are used exclusively by Aurora nights.

Order a coffee or a glass of wine at the bar, read a magazine or spin a yarn about your arctic adventures and the magnificent aurora displays you have seen.

For those wanting to soothe the muscles there is a sauna.
