Day by Day Itinerary DAY 1: Fly to Swedish Lapland. Transfer to Wilderness Cabins. Aurora Hot Tub & Gourmet Dinner page 1/8 Fly to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland where you will be and transferred to the Arctic Gourmet wilderness cabins by one of our guides. Petri Tuominen our lead guide has worked with us since we started in Swedish Lapland 15 years ago and has entertained thousands of our clients over the years. On arrival at the Arctic Gourmet wilderness cabins Johan and Malin, the owners, will meet and settle you into your cabin. After your travels the perfect tonic is to relax in the northern lights hot tub and soak up the arctic evening. Dinner will be served in the cosy dining room adjacent to the cabin. Johan is a trained chef and his pride and joy is the ‘Chef’s table’. This has to be the smallest restaurant in Sweden with just 2 tables with views over the valley and a fitted kitchen where Johan will cook and serve your Gourmet evening meals! Sit outside afterwards around the camp fire, take a soothing sauna or jump back into the outdoor hot tub and relax with the prospect of a Northern Lights display flashing above you. Meals included: Dinner DAY 2: Husky Wilderness Safari. Relaxing Evening at Arctic Gourmet Cabins After breakfast your guide will pick you up for one of the highlights of your trip, driving a husky sled team in pristine arctic wilderness. Ylva Forssén is one of a select group of accomplished ‘lady’ husky guides, whose kennels are deep into the valley from where she runs very personal sled dog experiences. She has a very unique relationship with her dogs and we always feel it is a privilege to spend time with her. Once you arrive at the kennels get acquainted with the dogs and receive detailed instructions about how to drive a team. Harness the dogs and feel their excitement as you attach the sled. Head out into the frozen river valley where you will have opportunities to take turns in driving the team whilst making stops to take photos. The location is outside the major tourist areas and we can almost promise that you will enjoy pristine arctic nature alone. You will be out for around 2 hours before heading back to base for a warming lunch with the family. You are welcomed right into the heart of Ylva and Peter’s home for lunch. Either return to the cabins for some siesta time or why not extend your husky experience by taking another wilderness husky tour in the afternoon. You will also be able to assist with the ‘warming down’ of the dogs and learn a bit about kennel craft. ( see optional extra) This evening enjoy dinner served by Johan and another night of relaxation around the outside fire or take a sauna or hot tub for a great sense of wellbeing. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner DAY 3: Snowmobile Safari on Private Trails. Transfer to Abisko the Northern Lights Capital. Visit to the Aurora Sky Station page 2/8 After breakfast experience a snowmobile trek through part of Europe’s last untouched wilderness. Driving out from Mattarahkka Lodge, run by our long term partner Andreas Mikko, the adventure takes you out in the wilderness following the guide’s own private snowmobile trails. You will drive your snowmobile through the forest, over frozen lakes and the chance of seeing reindeer and moose in their natural habitat are always present. Continue your excursion up to the mountain Eatnamvárri where fantastic scenery will display in front of you; miles and miles of untouched wilderness towards Kebnakaise, Sweden’s tallest mountain. Back at the Lodge enjoy a traditional Sami lunch. This afternoon transfer to Abisko, around a 1 hour journey. Check into Abisko Mountain Lodge, owned by Mina and Dick Johannson, and be issued with your Arctic clothing for the rest of your Northern Lights holiday. This evening enjoy the fantastic cuisine at Abisko Mountain Lodge as you partake in their traditional Lappish menu which includes Reindeer, Arctic Char and Cloudberries – 3 of the unique ingredients to the area (vegetarian options are available). This evening after dinner in the Lodge, transfer to the Aurora Sky Station, widely regarded as the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights. Take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps and Tornetrask. During the winter nights when it is dark, depending on the correct weather conditions, it is possible to see the Northern Lights dancing in the sky around you from this fantastic vantage point. The Aurora Sky Station has an exhibition about the Aurora Borealis, created by IRF, the Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna. Here you will learn more about the phenomenon before going out on the viewing deck to begin your night sky gazing. Journey down at around midnight and overnight at the Lodge. Once you cross into Norway enjoy the magnificent views and take photos before continuing up and over Björnfjell – a stunning Norwegian mountain dotted with small grass roofed cottages. Meander down the mountain, where small birch trees give way to large evergreens and dramatic mountains fall steeply down into the Norwegian Fjord. In Narvik you have the opportunity to take the Gondola up to a vantage point with extensive views out towards the Lofoten Islands, ascend the observation deck of the Scandic Hotel and take coffee or lunch (not included) or visit the newly built Peace Museum. This state of the art facility offers a glimpse of what life looked like in these majestic Fjords during the Second World War Nazi occupation. Plan B, if weather prevents the train from running, is to explore Abisko National Park with its frozen rivers, lake and canyon. Müller: Tourism labor market impacts of national parks Abstract: In a Nordic context, economic impacts of tourism in national parks remained largely un- known due to lacking implementation of standardized comparative measurements. For this reason, we want to investigate the economic impacts of national parks in a peripheral Scandinavian context by analyzing employment in tourism. Theoretically, the paper addresses the idea of nature protection as a tool for regional development. The scientific literature suggests that nature can be considered a commodity that can be used for the production of tourism experiences in peripheries. In this context nature protection is applied as a label for signifying attractive places for tourists leading to increased tourist numbers and employment. This argument follows mainly North American experiences point- ing at a positive impact of protected areas on regional development. Meanwhile European studies are more skeptical regarding desired economic benefits. A major challenge is the assessment of tourism’s economic impacts. This paper suggests an approach that reveals the impacts on the labor market. This is particularly applicable since data is readily available and, moreover from a public perspective, employment and tax incomes are of uppermost importance in order to sustain population figures and local demand for public services. At the same time accessibility and low visitor numbers form major challenges for tourism stakeholders and complicate the assessment of economic impacts through questionnaires and interviews.

Detta görs genom att studera tre kartor som avbildar samma område men vid olika tidpunkter och med olika motiv. Kartorna studeras genom en operationalisering av den franske sociologen Bruno Latour’s teori om ’immutable mobiles’. Uppsatsen visar att den statliga kartografiska verksamheten under 1900-talet i Sverige producerade immutable mobiles som sedan kunde avläsas av aktörer och som i sin tur kunde använda dem för att understödja deras politiska och vetenskapliga argument. En tillsynes trivial poäng. Problemet är dock avståndet i mellan den centraliserade makten och platsen som i detta fallet är ca 1400 kilometer. Kartorna möjliggör alltså en maktrelation trots det stora avståndet. Allt eftersom de statligt ägda kartorna var hämtade, tolkades de av aktörernas ideologiska perspektiv. Dessa tolkningar låg sedan till grund för politiska beslut som sedan resulterade i faktiska ingrepp i landskapet. Formerandet av Abisko nationalpark används i uppsatsen som ett exempel på hur denna process fungerar. Parken skapades med ett specifikt set av ideologiska motiv. De politiska aktörerna använde statliga kartor för att utforma sin proposition. Formerandet av parken är således en manifestation av både statlig närvaro, statlig kontroll över landskapet och ett ideologiskt artefakt.

På grund av detta ger jag nu ut denna skrift, som dels kommer att finnas tillgänglig som PDF‐fil på Internet, dels kommer att ges ut som bok. Lars Larsson Mukka var född i Junosuando 1727 och tillhörde släkten Mukka – en släkt som i sin tur är en gren av den sedan 1539 kända birkarlssläkten Pello i Pello, Övertorneå socken. Lars blev åbo på nybygget Kuoksu 1765 – ett nybygge som grundats på 1690‐talet av hans hustru Lisa Olofsdotters farfar, men som 1736 tagits över av Kengis bruk. Senast på 1780‐talet började Lars Larsson Mukka kalla sig Lars Larsson Kuoksu, eftersom det i Tornedalen vid den här tiden var sed att uppta boplatsens namn som sitt eget. Genom ett flitigt uppodlingsarbete lade han grunden till en stor förmögenhet, som skingrades först under mellankrigstidens ekonomiska kriser. Lars Larsson Kuoksus sonsöner Olof och Lars Larssöner Kuoksu köpte Kuoksu nybygge av Kengis bruk den 22 februari 1821 och deras ättlingar och efterträdare äger fortfarande delar av det gamla nybygget.

    A long-term Arctic snow depth record from Abisko, This article was modifi ed in northern Sweden, 1913–2004 February 2008: Fig. 8 has been corrected. Jack Kohler, Ola Brandt, Margareta Johansson & Terry Callaghan A newly digitized record of snow depth from the Abisko Scientifi c Research Station in northern Sweden covers the period 1913–present. Mean snow depths were taken from paper records of measurements made on a profi le comprising 10 permanent stakes. This long-term record yields snow depths consistent with two other shorter term Abisko records: measurements made at another 10-stake profi le (1974–present) and at a single stake (1956–present). The measurement interval is variable, rang- ing from daily to monthly, and there are no data for about half of the winter months in the period 1930–1956. To fi ll the gaps, we use a simple snowpack model driven by concurrent temperature and precipitation measurements at Abisko. Model snow depths are similar to observed; dif- ferences between the two records are comparable to those between profi le and single stake measurements. For both model and observed snow depth records, the most statistically signifi cant trend is in winter mean snow depths, amounting to an increase of about 2 cm or 5 % of the mean per decade over the whole measurement period, and 10 % per decade since the 1930–40s, but all seasonal means of snow depth show positive trends on the longest timescales. However, the start, end, and length of the snow season do not show any statistically signifi cant long-term trends.
