Day by Day Itinerary DAY 1Fly to Swedish Lapland. Lappish Dinner and Aurora Hunt page 1/9 Fly to Kiruna in Swedish Lapland where you will be met and transferred to Abisko (1 hour). On arrival you will check in at Abisko Mountain Lodge and be provided with complimentary Arctic Clothing. For information on how to dress for the Arctic. Mina and Dick Johansson, your hosts, run a really friendly and warming Lodge, with a restaurant serving excellent meals using local ingredients. This evening enjoy the excellent cuisine at Mountain Lodge as you partake in their traditional Lappish menu which includes Reindeer, Arctic Char and Cloudberries – 3 of the unique ingredients to the area. The only thing that can interrupt your evening is the Aurora call. As the dogs joyously pull you through fresh snow trails enjoy the contrasting beauty of Lake Tornetrask on one side, which totally freezes in winter, and the mountains shielding the National Park on the other. A truly spectacular way to spend a few hours! Lunch will be enjoyed back at the Lodge. This evening after dinner at the Lodge take the chairlift up Mount Nuolja to the Aurora observatory which offers visitors a panoramic view over Lapporten, the Abisko Alps and Tornetrask. Your chances of seeing the Aurora are excellent. Abisko is blessed with a unique climate that brings with it the most cloud-free sky in the region. The Aurora Sky Station has an exhibition about the Aurora Borealis, created by IRF, the Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna. Here you will learn more about the phenomenon before going out on the viewing deck to begin your night sky gazing. Transfer back to your hotel at around midnight. Enjoy a delicious three course meal at the sky station prepared using the best local ingredients. Your chances of seeing the aurora are good. Abisko is blessed with many long, dark nights. In addition, there is minimal artificial light. Abisko is situated 250km north of the Arctic Circle and has the most cloud-free sky in Sweden. Take the train from the station near the Lodge and follow the famous iron ore railroad with beautiful mountain vistas, frozen waterfalls and stunning Arctic valleys. Once you cross into Norway enjoy the magnificent views and try to take photos before continuing up and over Björnfjell – a stunning Norwegian mountain dotted with small grass roofed cottages. Meander down the mountain, where small birch trees give way to large evergreens and dramatic mountains fall steeply down into the Norwegian Fjord. In Narvik you have the opportunity to ascend to the observation deck of the Scandic Hotel and take coffee or lunch (not included), do some souvenir shopping or visit the newly built Peace Museum. This state of the art facility offers a glimpse of what life looked like in these majestic Fjords during the Second World War Nazi occupation. Note: The train timetable is only printed a couple of months in advance so timings that we provide are based on the previous season. This evening have dinner at Abisko Mountain Lodge before joining a “Lights Over Lapland” photographer for an opportunity to see and photograph the Aurora Borealis in the wilderness of Abisko National Park. You will be supplied with cameras pre set for Aurora photography and spend the evening in Abisko National Park. Your base is a Tepee from which you can venture out to capture the Lights. Even if you have never taken a picture in your life you have a great chance of going home with some beautiful Aurora photographs and memories that will last a lifetime! Overnight at Abisko Mountain Lodge. Meals Included: Breakfast, Light Lunch and Dinner DAY 4 Snowmobile Trip in Abisko National Park. Lodge Dinner & Aurora Hunt. After breakfast, Peter your Snowmobile guide, will meet you at the lodge and take you out for a 2 hour exploration of Abisko National Park. As Abisko National Park surrounds Abisko Mountain Lodge you don’t have to go far to get some awe inspiring views of the frozen Lake Tornetrask and the unique glacial formation of Laporten, which rises like a beacon out of the white desert! There are fewer more picturesque places to snowmobile in Swedish Lapland. Return for lunch at the lodge and an afternoon of relaxation. It is also the perfect contrast to a break in the arctic. The old town in Stockholm is very picturesque and compact and can be done in a full day. Your time will be spent exploring some fascinating landmarks. The VASA museum is world class, the Nobel museum of local interest and for ABBA fans; new in 2013 is the ABBA interactive museum. Also in December Stockholm has many Christmas markets so a break can allow you to do some shopping and get into the Christmas spirit. You will stay in the Rival Hotel owned by Benny Anderson of Abba fame. The hotel is an excellent 4* hotel in a quiet square but within walking distance of the old town.
