(November 2011) Martial arts are extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development. The term martial art has become heavily associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, but was originally used in regard to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. An English fencing manual of 1639 used the term in reference specifically to the "Science and Art" of swordplay. The term is ultimately derived from Latin, martial arts being the "Arts of Mars," the Roman god of war.[1] Some martial arts are considered 'traditional' and tied to an ethnic, cultural or religious background, while others are modern systems developed either by a founder or an association. Abstract Folk sports are the countertype of modern sports: invented traditions, bolstered by tangible ritual and intangible myth, played by the common folk in order to express a romantic ethnic identity. Like other cultural forms, traditional sports and games around the world are becoming marginalized in the face of modernization and globalization. In 2003, UNESCO ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in an attempt to counter such trends of cultural homogenization. As elements of intangible cultural heritage, folk sports now fall under the auspices of UNESCO safeguarding policies.

  • Folk Sports History
This article was written for the Berkshire Encyclopedia of World Sport, ed. David Levinson, 2005. Folk sports Folk sports is the general term for a diverse group of sports and games whose common element is their status as being “popular” or related to folk culture. Folk sports include especially traditional, ethnic, or indigenous sports and games, but also new activities that are based on traditional practices. Pub games, noncompetitive volkswalks, mass gymnastics, spontaneous sports of the working classes, and games and sports associated with festivals all may be termed as “folk”. Despite the origin of folk sport activities in the pre-industrial world, the idea of “folk sports” is itself an invention of the industrial age. Folk sports stand in opposition to the specialized modern sport and are more related to recreational Sport for all. Folk sports are based on festivity and community, rather than disciplinary rules and production of results. History Folk sports are neither one sport nor a well-defined group of sports, and so they have no single, linear history. They are as distinct in different countries as the words for “folk” in different languages: volk (Flemish, German), narod (Russian), peuple (French), folk (Danish, Swedish, English), popolo (Italian), and folk or people (English). The concept is European, but games around the world are often labeled as folk sports, too. Folk sports and the terminology of “folk” may be attached to a particular ideology, whether 1 rightwing (völkisches Turnen) or leftwing (sport popolare), but is in most cases neutral in relation to political ideas. Pre-modern folk games and festivities Folk sports as a concept did not exist before the industrial age, because there was neither "sport" in the modern sense nor the notion of "folk" with its modern connotations of a collective cultural identity.

  • Icelandic Wrestling
Icelandic Wrestling By Johannes Josefsson (Icelandic Champion) 1908 Icelandic Wrestling We name this style of wrestling Icelandic because it had its origin in Iceland, and has never been practiced, or even known, in other lands. The perfection to which it has been brought in recent years has proved it to be, to a very high degree, an exercise which gives health and endurance to the body, and is a real source of refreshment to the mind, while at the same time it sharpens the courage, smartness and intellect of those who take part in it. Its benefits, to some extent. Were recognized in the olden days, when the deceitful sword of the ancients had frequent use, and life and death were at stake. Many instances are on record, where weaponless men, on being attacked with a sword, rendered that weapon entirely useless, by getting a “grip” on the hand that was raised to strike, in some cases even wresting the sword away from them. “Gripping” was also resorted to in the event of a man losing his sword. This kind of wrestling is preserved in Iceland as the affectionate foster-child of the nation, having been practiced as far back as 1100, when Iceland was a republic. It was not then limited to the platform nor to any special occasion, for throughout the land, from the country farm to the Althing (Parliament) it was a daily exercise in which most men took part. In those days a contest called “Baendaglima” was occasionally held. The wrestlers divided themselves into two opposing parties,.

  • Swiss Wresting
Traditional people ’s sport When the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival takes place every three years, Switzerland’s national sport of Swiss wrestling very much finds itself in the spotlight. Its one-time shadowy existence has long since been a thing of the past. Swiss wrestling is becoming ever more popular with children and adults, the young and old, and people from bothmur- ban and rural areas. Thousands of fans visit Swiss wrestling and mountain festivals. Interlaken 1805 At the first recorded Swiss wrestling tournament at the Unspunnenfest festival in Interlaken in 1805, a clash between the city folk (Turnerschwinger) and the rural population (Sennenschwinger) ensued. Both types of Swiss wrestler still exist to this day. Following the Unspunnenfest competition, further Swiss wrestling events were held at irregular inter- vals. They took place without clear regulations, and it is also likely that they did not take the shape of large public festivals. As far back as the nine- teenth century, the unofficial title of Schwingerkönig (Swiss wrestling champion) was already awarded to the country’s strongest Swiss wrestler. There is little historical record of how this title was determined. From a national game to an elite sport Although Swiss wrestlers were viewed as elite sports- men from an early stage, the sport was officially referred to as a «national game» until 2010. With the professionalisation of the sport, Swiss wrestling has also been assigned ever more importance by the general population, and the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festivals are now among Switzerland’s most popular and biggest public festivals. Adherence to (unofficial) Swiss wrestling etiquette is the responsibility of visitors.
