VISIT TO Shing Mun Country Park and Arboretum The Faculty of Science and Technology had organized visit to Shing Mun Country Park on 4 October 2019. The Shing Mun Country Park Visitor Centre, provides displays on the origin and history of Shing Mun, the reservoir and the mining industry in the early 20th centuries. Animals and mineral specimens are also on display. Video on Country Parks development and Countryside Conservation matters were shown. The Shing Mun Arboretum, occupies 14 square kilometres, is situated in the Country Park. It extends to Shing Mun Reservoir Road in the south. The western border lies in Tai Mo Shan, while Grassy Hill and Needle Hill mark the eastern margin. There are 7000 plants, belonging to over 270 species (which are native to Hong Kong or Southern China) in the Arboretum. The plants include a collection of bamboos, protected plant species, plants named after Botanists, plants first discovered in Hong Kong and Camellias found in Hong Kong Countryside, etc. 36 Year 2 students from Associate of Science in Environmental Studies joined this field trip and it was led by Judy KIU. During the visit, Government staff (Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department) introduced the history of Shing Mun country park, the characteristics of the plantation trees there, as well as their ecological values to the woodland ecosystem. There are many interactive games so that the students will learn more through interesting activities. Challenging 12 hours 2019 Course Description Yau Tong - CP1 Tseng Lan Shue (7km) Start with 2km on gentle uphill pedestrian pavement，then step on Wilson trail towards Black Hill. Upon reaching the top, go down and up several gentle slopes before arriving at Ma Yau Tong Village. Walk along the village road for 2km to Sun Tei Village and continue 1km on concrete village path, you reach CP1 Tsang Lan Shue，This CP only provides drinking water. CP1 Tsang Lan Shue – SS1 Tai Lam Wu – SS2 Tung Yeung Shan – CP2 Shatin Pass Pavilion (8km) Depart from CP1 on the concrete village path of Tsang Lan Shue. Continue on the trail steps of Wilson Trail and up a small hill called Wong Keng Tsai. Beware of the slippery stone steps covered with moss and protruded roots on this 1.7km section. SS1 Tai Lam Wu provides snacks and drinks. SS1 Tai Lam Wu – SS2 Tung Yeung Shan Depart from SS1 on a short stretch of water catchment road，then start the strenuous Tung Yeung Shan uphill section. This 1.5km sections has an accumulated ascent of 400m and there is little shade on the upper part. However, the view is broad on high grounds and you can see the whole Sai Kung peninsula. SS2 Tung Yeung Shan provides only drinking water. SS2 Tung Yeung Shan – CP2 Shatin Pass pavilion Continue with 3.3km downhill concrete road towards CP2 Shatin Pass pavilion on Fei Ngo Shan Road and Shatin Pass Road. Trailwalker Route
TRAILWALKER ROUTE Route The 100 km route starts in Pak Tam Chung at Sai Kung, and covers sections 1 to 9 of the MacLehose Trail, which is about 88 km (M001 – M174). After passing distance post M174 and leaving CP9, the route leaves the MacLehose Trail and travels five kilometers along a country trail to the north coast of Tai Lam Chung Reservoir. The trail then turns right along a paved road towards Wong Nai Tun / Tai Tong and heads towards the Finish Point at the Po Leung Kuk Jockey Club Tai Tong Holiday Camp in Yuen Long (OTW175 – OTW198). TNF 100 and TNF 50 Hong Kong Route Descriptions
2017 TNF 100 and TNF 50 HONG KONG ROUTE DESCRIPTIONS Both the 50 km and 100 km races start at 8 AM on Saturday, December 16th inside the Tai Mei Tuk car park in the Northern New Territories of Hong Kong SAR. Baggage check will take place in The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Tai Mei Tuk Outdoor Activities Center (HKFYG Center). Race assembly will take place on the bicycle path near Bradbury Jockey Club Youth Hostel, Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association. TNF 100 and TNF 50 Section 1: Tai Mei Tuk / Pat Sing Leng Nature Trail / Wu Kau Tang Approximate distance ~ 6.6 km Total elevation gain ~ 460 meters Total elevation loss ~ 356 meters Racers will run out the bicycle path and turn right onto Ting Kok Road for approximately 1 km. The course by pass the Plover Cove Visitor Center, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) onto Brides Pool Road for about 500 meters then meet a trail head before a Barbecue Site managed by AFCD. Take sharp left turn, run on stone step trail all the way up until a junction with the Pat Sing Leng Nature Trail then turn right. The course continues along a footpath approximately 1.5 meters wide and gains altitude steadily. There are occasional breaks in the forest that afford views to the right of Plover Cove Reservoir. After attaining a height of land at about 350 meters, the path descends to an intersection where the Wilson Trail splits off to the left and racers continue on the Pat Sin Leng Nature Trail to the right.

Seaward Department of Environmental Science, University of Bradford, Bradford, West Yorkshire BD7 1DP, United Kingdom Abstract. An annotated checklist of the lichens of Hong Kong, based on all available literature reports and specimens, including those recently collected by the authors, is presented. In total, 261 species are reported, of which 176 are new records for Hong Kong, 132 of which are new for China, 43 are new for East Asia, and 27 are new for Asia. The lichen vegetation is mainly tropical, as is shown by the distribution patterns of the identified species: 53 species are cosmopolitan, 40 northern temperate, 122 pantropical, 17 paleotropical and 29 endemic to tropical East Asia. With regard to substrata, 129 species are corticolous, 148 saxicolous, 17 foliicolous and 19 terricolous. Four species are newly described: Anisomeridium conorostratum Aptroot, A. hydei Aptroot, Caloplaca pulicarioides Aptroot and Placidiopsis poronioides Aptroot. The flora is rather poor in species; for example, no Caliciales have been found. In the past, the numbers of species of several groups such as the Graphidaceae, Heterodermia and Xanthoparmelia have been overestimated, whereas few pyrenocarps have been reported. The flora of wet granitic outcrops is surprisingly well developed in Hong Kong. Although not a single Peltula species was reported before, six species were identified, including one that was previously only known from Africa. In addition, several other cyanophilic genera are present, such as Euopsis, Psorotichia, Pyrenopsis and, most unexpectedly, Vestergrenopsis, each with one species.

Shing Mun Valley Taking a circular route around Shing Mun Reservoir, this hike offers beautiful scenery and clear direction signs. Walking up from the minibus stop, watchout for vehicles on the road. After passing the grass-covered dam, and then the main barbecue areas of Shing Mun Country Park, you should turn onto the Shing Mun Jogging Trail. The Jogging Trail is level, easy to walk along, and has wonderful views across Shing Mun Reservoir to the woodland slopes rising up to Tai Mo Shan. Turn left when you leave the footpath onto a forest trail, and you will find a pavilion downhill at a short distance. The picnic site here has spacious grassland, and makes a fine place for friends to enjoy time together. Farther on is the well-known Tai Shing Stream. This watercourse, with its ample water flow, is the main stream of Shing Mun valley - and nowadays it is the main source of water for the reservoir. This area has many luxuriant Paper-bark trees, whose straight trunks and peeling bark make the woodland here particularly attractive. Hong Kong's country parks are visited by about 11 million people every year. The keen demand for green country side and recreation is obvious. Boasting a wide range of facilities, our country parks are designed to meet such demand. Whether you are interested in hiking, nature study or simply enjoy being in a natural environment with your family, you will find sites and facilities geared to your needs. Shing Mun, Lion Rock and Kam Shan are the first generation country parks of Hong Kong, designated nearly 30 years ago on 24 June 1977.
