    Syllabus for RESPECT: Minority Voices in Early Soul, Reggae, Rock, and Folk OLLI UC Berkeley Fall 2021 Mondays, 9:30am-11am Instructor: Richie Unterberger Week One: Social Commentary and Protest in Soul Music, Pt. 1 In Soul of the 1960s While occasional soul songs of the first half of the 1960s had observations about the world at large, for the most part they dealt with romantic love, as well as a good share of tunes about partying and dancing. Many of these songs were great and classic. But wasn’t until the late 1960s that compositions commenting about the American (and sometimes specifically African-American) experience became a significant part of soul music. Curtis Mayfield, principal singer-songwriter of the Impressions, was perhaps the first to regularly express such sentiments. By the late 1960s, other stars like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Nina Simone, and Sly & the Family Stone were also doing so occasionally. After some initial resistance on the part of its ownership and producers, Motown Records also made significant forays into this territory, most often with the Temptations, but also with the Supremes and other artists. Week Two: Social Commentary and Protest in Soul Music, Pt. 2 In Soul of the 1970s In the first half of the 1970s, socially conscious soul music sometimes gets tougher and more militant. At Motown, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder not only successfully fight for more artistic freedom to record more lyrically aware material, but also focus on long- playing albums as a medium of expression that are at least as important as hit singles.

    Live review: Rebelution at Black Sheep October 3rd, 2009, 10:01 am · Post a Comment · posted by breed Rebelution, Passafire, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, at Black Sheep, 10.2.09 By Bill Reed Hands were in the air. Heads were bobbing. Hips were shaking to and fro. The happy, beach party, reggae rock of Rebelution filled the Black Sheep on Friday night, and the crowd was ready to embrace the carefree party vibe. Rebelution first formed to play college parties, and the California quartet carried that feel into the packed-out room. And they didn’t come alone. The four-hour show gave a tour of contemporary takes on the reggae beat, from the full-on rock of Passafire, to the rootsier attack of the Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, to Rebelution’s closing set. Passafire started off with reggae elements, but then descended into instrumental freakouts that sounded more like punk. The band plays at the edges of reggae, infusing the sounds into their rock mix, and the result was pretty great. Giant Panda went the other direction, bringing out a squad of six – including an organ and a piano – and gave a loving shout-out to reggae roots. They were less poppy, going with long but relaxed instrumental interludes, and the reggae beat was never absent. Giant Panda also leaned on more socially conscious lyrics, singing “I don’t want blood on my hands, I need food on my table.” Rebelution was the main attraction. The crowd pushed forward, danced like crazy, and most fans could recite the band’s lyrics when lead singer Eric Rachmany held out the mic on songs from their debut “Courage to Grow” and recent release “Bright Side of Life.” Rebelution whips reggae, rock, pop and hip-hop into a party concoction.
