Location South America, focusing on the main river basins draining the Brazilian Shield and adjacent zones. Methods Phylogenetic analysis of 214 morphological characters of 102 cynolebiasine species using tnt, in conjunction with dispersal–vicariance analysis (diva) based on the distribution of cynolebiasine species among 16 areas of endemism. Results The basal cynolebiasine node is hypothesized to be derived from an old vicariance event occurring just after the separation of South America from Africa, when the terrains at the passive margin of the South American plate were isolated from the remaining interior areas. This would have been followed by geodispersal events caused by river-capturing episodes from the adjacent upland river basins to the coastal region. Optimal ancestral reconstructions suggest that the diversification of the tribe Cynolebiasini in north-eastern South America was first caused by vicariance events in the Parana˜–Urucuia–Sa˜o Francisco area, followed by dispersal from the Sa˜o Francisco to the Northeastern Brazil area. The latter dispersal event occurred simultaneously in two different cynolebiasine clades, possibly as a result of a temporary connection of the Sa˜o Francisco area before the uplift of the Borborema Plateau during the Miocene. -

This species is distinguished from remaining species, except S. adornatus, by the large number of dorsal fin rays, which makes possible a large dorsal fin base length that begins well anterior to the middle of the body, before the vertical line through the pelvic fin. This species differs from S. adornatus by the color pattern of the anal fin, which may have yellow stripes or light dots (vs. small light points), and also by the lower number of dorsal fin rays. The composition, phylogeny, and classification of Characidae is currently uncertain, despite significant efforts based on analysis of morphological and molecular data. No consensus about the monophyly of this group or its position within the order Characiformes has been reached, challenged by the fact that many key studies to date have non-overlapping taxonomic representation and focus only on subsets of this diversity. Results: In the present study we propose a new definition of the family Characidae and a hypothesis of relationships for the Characiformes based on phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes (4,680 base pairs). The sequences were obtained from 211 samples representing 166 genera distributed among all 18 recognized families in the order Characiformes, all 14 recognized subfamilies in the Characidae, plus 56 of the genera so far considered incertae sedis in the Characidae. The phylogeny obtained is robust, with most lineages significantly supported by posterior probabilities in Bayesian analysis, and high bootstrap values from maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses. -

Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. Abstract On the basis of fish collections made between 1991 and 2014, four species of the seasonal killifish genusNeofundulus are reported to occur in the Brazilian Pantanal, Paraguay river basin: N. parvipinnis, endemic to the Cuiabá and São Lourenço river drainages, in the northern portion of the Pantanal; N. rubrofasciatus, new species, from the Miranda river drainage, N. aureomaculatus, new species, from the Aqui- dauana river drainage, both in the south-eastern portion of the Pantanal; and N. paraguayensis, occurring in the Paraguay and Nabileque river floodplains, in the southern part of the Pantanal. The new species are diagnosed by unique colour patterns, and a combination of morphological characters states indicating that they are more closely related to N. parvipinnis and N. splendidus than to N. paraguayensis. If any one can help him that would be great. There is some news on the killifish front which may interest some. There are several new specie names and a few new discoveries. News New classification and species names Five new South American Annuals have been described. These are Cynopoecilus fulgens, C. intimus, C. nigrovittatus and C. multipapillatus. A Nematolebias papilliferus has also been described. The genus Nematolebias has also been redefined and now only contains Nematolebias papilliferus and whitei. E-mail: [email protected] (*autor correspondente). Resumo: A fauna de peixes de riachos brasileiros compreende 36 famílias de peixes teleósteos de água doce. O conhecimento sobre a sistemática e filogenia deste conjunto de espécies ampliou-se consideravelmente nas últimas duas décadas, porém ainda é muito heterogêneo, havendo grupos sobre os quais pouco se conhece, assim como grupos para os quais há chaves de identificação e hipóteses filogenéticas recentes e bem documentadas. O número de famílias de peixes de água doce com presença frequente em riachos brasileiros ampliou-se de 31 para 36. Este crescimento no conhecimento da diversidade dos peixes neotropicais refletiu-se no grande desenvolvimento das hipóteses sobre sua evolução e contribuiu para o entendimento da história filogenética e estruturação das comunidades de peixes de riacho. TAXONOMY AND PHYLOGENY OF FISHES FROM BRAZILIAN SMALL STREAMS: The fish fauna occurring in Brazilian small streams comprises 36 families of teleost freshwater fishes. The systematics and phylogenetic knowledge about this fauna greatly expanded during the last two decades, but is still very heterogeneous. For some taxonomic groups there are taxonomic identification keys and well-documented phylogenetic hypotheses, while other groups are mostly comprised by poorly known species. The increase in the knowledge of Neotropical fish diversity was associated with the significant growth of hypotheses about their evolution and contributed to the understanding of the phylogenetic history of fish comunities and their structure in small streams. -
