The Paschal Triduum St. Patrick’s Faith Community April 9, 10, & 11, 2020 The Reverend Collins I. Anaeche - Administrator Deacon Kenneth Bangs - Parish Deacon Margaret Peckham - Office Manager Paul Czaplicki - Facilities Manager Carolyn Zimmerman - Administrative Assistant David Humbarger - Faith Formation Coordinator Chris Casey - Music Director Peter Fortier - Youth Minister/ Confirmation Coordinator The Holy Triduum The Journey of Our Redemption The Paschal Triduum, (TRID-oo-um), Latin for “three days,” commemorates Christ’s redemptive journey through death, burial and resurrection to new life. The Church observes the Triduum as a single event made up of three distinct parts. In accordance with the custom in biblical times, each “day” begins in the evening. Holy Thursday The first day of the Triduum is filled with the action of Christ’s self-gift. The Mass of the Lord’s Supper commemorates Christ’s command that we “love one another.” Symbolized in the washing of the feet, this great commission of Christ is made concrete in Jesus’ crucifixion on Calvary as well as in the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The Holy Oils, blessed by the Archbishop at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, are presented to the pastor. These oils will be used in baptism, confirmation and anointing of the sick. The first day of the Paschal Triduum culminates in the solemn veneration of the cross on Good Friday. Good Friday The second day of the Triduum is filled with the silence of the tomb. The solemnity of Good Friday continues throughout the day of Holy Saturday. The Church celebrates no Eucharistic liturgy during the day, but silently prepares for the Easter Vigil celebration in the evening. As Jesus remained in the tomb, so the Church as a whole awaits the coming of the Lord’s kingdom. Easter Vigil The third day of the Triduum is filled with the wonder of the resurrection. The Easter Vigil is the high point of the liturgical year. The formal solemnity of this liturgy recalls the night when all people were redeemed, when death was vanquished and life became victorious. It is the night new members are initiated into the Church. The drama of the lighting of the new fire, the blessing of the Paschal candle and the Easter proclamation in the candlelit church set the stage for the recounting of the story of salvation in the Scripture readings. “Alleluia” once again greets the Gospel, and following the homily, we celebrate baptism and the renewal of our baptismal promises. The Paschal Triduum officially concludes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday, but the wonder of the Easter Season extends for a full 50 days. Purpose of this booklet This booklet has been put together to help us to enter into the Holy Triduum celebration. We must not remain as an outsider as if we were watching a drama or play unfold before us. We must enter into the journey with Christ in song, silent prayer, listening and reflecting. To remain a bystander would cheat us of the spiritual growth that comes from journeying with Christ through the liturgical celebration of his paschal mysteries. Usually the priest, accompanied by the altar servers with lighted candles, elevates the cross first near the church door, second in the middle of the church and lastly before the entrance of the sanctuary and says: “Behold the wood of the cross, on which hung the salvation of the world.” The congregation responds: “Come let us adore.” After each response, the priest uncovers the right arm of the cross, then the left arm and finally the rest of the cross accordingly. Once the cross is in place, the ministers will reverence the cross. Then the assembly is invited to come forward to venerate the cross by making a profound bow, a gentle genuflection or a simple kiss. This year, when the Cross is raised, you are invited to venerate in your own way.
